NORTHWEST East Oregonian Page 2A Tuesday, October 30, 2018 Activists rally to show support of stalled lawsuit EUGENE (AP) — Young activists and others rallied Monday in Eugene, Portland and other cities to support a high-profile climate change lawsuit brought by 21 young people against the federal government. Trial was set to begin in federal court in Eugene on Monday. But the U.S. Supreme Court temporar- ily halted the proceedings to decide whether the case should move forward. The 2015 lawsuit argues that government officials have known for more than 50 years that carbon pollu- tion from fossil fuels was causing climate change and that policies on oil and gas deprive young people of life, liberty and property. At least 500 people ral- lied Monday outside the fed- eral courthouse in Eugene. The youngest plaintiff, 11-year-old Florida resident Levi Draheim, and others addressed the crowd, The Register-Guard reported. Dozens also gathered in Portland and Seattle to sup- port the youth. ONTARIO (AP) — A chief petitioner of the effort to get a measure on the ballot seeking to lift the ban on recreational sales of marijuana in Ontario has formed a polit- ical action committee. The Argus Observer reports Jahmel Cooke filed for the PAC under Malheur- CAN!, the same name used by the Ontario group that petitioned for the ballot measure. Jim Forrester, an organizer for the group, says Cooke filed for the PAC with- out approval from the group. Cooke says he formed the PAC to “make sure everything is good with the ballot mea- sure.” He says an election office official told him that forming a PAC was the next step required in the process and to protect people listed in the petition committee. The National Weather Service says the tornado on Sunday afternoon overturned three unoccupied trailers, damaged a roof, snapped tree limbs and briefly left about 800 people without power. The twister was a category E-0 — the ASHLAND (AP) — After responding to reports that two cougars were spotted on the Southern Oregon University campus, Ash- land police fired a shot at one of the ani- mals, but missed and the cougar escaped, apparently unharmed. The Ashland Daily Tidings reports that police Chief Tighe O’Meara said officers and SOU campus security responded at about 10 p.m. Sunday to reports of the cou- gars on the campus. The officers attempted to chase the cougars away by making noise, but were unsuccessful in scaring away the larger of the two cats. O’Meara then “made the decision that the cat had to be put down as it presented an ongoing danger to the community.” One shot was fired at the cougar, but missed, and the cougar then left the area. According to the release, the officers involved first ensured that there was a proper back stop immediately behind the target that could safely absorb the bullet.
