SPORTS Tuesday, October 30, 2018 East Oregonian Page 3B WSU rallies past Stanford, controls first place PAC-12 FOOTBALL By JOSH DUBOW AP Sports Writer STANFORD, Calif. — Gardner Minshew com- pleted his first 19 passes of the second half and drove No. 14 Washington State to a 42-yard field goal by Blake Mazza with 19 sec- onds remaining to put the Cougars in sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 North with a 41-38 victory over No. 24 Stanford on Saturday. Wash. St. Stanford 41 38 Minshew completed 40 of 50 passes for 438 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cougars (7-1, 4-1 Pac-12) to their third straight win over the Cardinal (5-3, 3-2). This victory follows last week’s over then-No. 12 Oregon, giving Washing- ton State back-to-back wins over ranked opponents for the first time since 2002. Minshew engineered the winning drive in the final 1:25 with the big play com- ing on a 35-yard pass to Jamire Calvin on third-and-2 from the 33. Minshew completed one more pass to move the ball to the 25 and after two incom- plete passes, Mazza made his kick to win it. With No. 15 Washing- ton losing at California, the Cougars head into the final month of the season alone in first place in the conference and remain the only one-loss team in the Pac-12. K.J. Costello threw a game-tying 25-yard touch- down pass to JJ Arcega-Wh- iteside with 1:25 to play but it wasn’t enough to prevent Stanford from losing for the third time in four games. Washington State trailed by 14 points late in the first half before rallying behind Minshew for the win. He led them to three TDs on the first four drives of the second half, using his legs and arm to knock off the Cardinal. Minshew scrambled on a key drive in the fourth quarter for 4 yards on third- and-5, nearly performing a flip out of bounds as he fought for the marker. He then converted the fourth down with a keeper, setting up a go-ahead 3-yard TD pass to Renard Bell. The Cardinal had been stopped on a fourth-and-3 from the 32 on the previous drive with Dominick Silvels stopping Bryce Love for a 1-yard loss on a short pass from K.J. Costello. Costello threw for 323 yards and four TDs, includ- ing two to Arcega-Whiteside. Up next Washington State: Host California on Saturday. Stanford: Visit Washing- ton on Saturday. OSU rallies past Colorado in OT Tate returns, Arizona beats UO By ARNIE STAPLETON AP Sports Writer By JOHN MARSHALL AP Sports Writer BOULDER, Colo. — Jack Colletto’s 1-yard sneak in overtime gave Oregon State its first lead and the Beavers held on to beat Colorado 41-34 Sat- urday, denying the Buffa- loes’ bid to gain bowl eli- gibility before November. It was Jake Luton who rallied the Beavers (2-6, 1-5 Pac-12) from a 28-point second-half deficit but they wouldn’t have their first road win since 2014 without Col- letto, who returned from an awful first half to score twice on keepers. The Buffaloes (5-3, 2-3) were seemingly safe when Travon McMillian, who was held to 25 yards on 10 first-half carries, took the first snap of the second half, burst up the middle and raced untouched for a 75-yard score and a 31-3 lead. One play. Seventy-five yards. Twelve seconds. Behind Luton, the Bea- vers answered with their own 75-yard touchdown drive. Only, this one took 17 plays and 6½ minutes. It included a trio of third- down conversions and two fourth-down conver- sions, including an 8-yard TD to Isaiah Hodgins on fourth-and-2. TUCSON, Ariz. — J.J. Taylor ran for 212 yards and two touchdowns, Khalil Tate threw for three scores in his return and Arizona domi- nated No. 19 Oregon 44-15 on Saturday night. Arizona (4-5, 3-3 Pac-12) jumped on the Ducks early and never let them up, turn- ing one Oregon miscue after another into scores. Tate threw for 189 yards on 19-of-33 passing after missing last week’s game against UCLA with a left ankle injury. Shawn Poin- dexter caught two touch- down passes and Josh Pol- lack kicked three field goals for Arizona. Oregon (5-3, 2-3) got off to a slow start for the sec- ond straight week, commit- ted three turnovers and two costly mistakes on special teams. The Ducks had 270 total yards — 190 below their average— against one of the Pac-12’s worst defenses. Oregon fell behind 27-0 by halftime last week to pre- vent any chance of a come- back in a 34-20 loss to No. 14 Washington State. The Ducks got stuck in the starting gate again in the desert. Arizona picked Oregon’s defense apart on its open- ing drive and the Ducks somehow left Poindexter AP Photo/Jack Dempsey Oregon State quarterback Jack Colletto (12) looks to pass against Colorado during the first half of an NCAA football game on Saturday in Boulder, Colo. BEAVER FOOTBALL Oregon St. 41 Colorado 34 Still, at 31-10, nobody at Folsum Field envisioned the Buffs blowing a pro- gram-high 28-point lead like they did against Kan- sas on Nov. 6, 2010. Both teams blew a chance to win it in the final seconds of regulation. After Oregon State tied it at 34 with 29 seconds left on Luton’s 10-yard touch- down pass to Trevon Brad- ford, defensive end Ter- rance Lang blocked Jordan Choukair’s extra point. The Buffs quickly reached the Beavers’ 36, but Davis Price badly missed a 53-yard field goal attempt as time expired. After Colletto’s score in overtime, Steven Mon- tez hit Jay MacIntyre for 21 yards at the 7. But a keeper netted no yards and a pass into the end zone was broken up. On third down, K.D. Nixon, who caught 13 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns, couldn’t hold onto a third TD pass. On fourth down, Mon- tez threw incomplete to Juwaan Winfree and the Beavers stormed the field in celebration of coach Jonathan Smith’s first Pac- 12 triumph. AP Photo/Rick Scuteri Arizona running back J.J. Taylor (21) stiff arms an Ore- gon defender in the first half during an NCAA college football game on Saturday in Tucson, Ariz. DUCK FOOTBALL Arizona Oregon 44 15 uncovered on a 22-yard TD reception. Oregon’s offense sput- tered early and the Ducks kept turning it over to give the Wildcats short fields. Travis Dye lost a fum- ble, star quarterback Justin Herbert tossed an intercep- tion on an ill-advised throw and Arizona’s Chacho Ulloa broke through to block Tom Snee’s punt at the Oregon 6-yard line. Pollack kicked field goals after each play, putting Arizona up 16-0. The Ducks finally got some momentum going with Herbert’s 29-yard TD pass to Dillon Mitchell, but Arizona followed with an 18-play scoring drive capped by Taylor’s 1-yard run to lead 23-8 at halftime. Tate opened the second half with an 8-yard TD pass to Poindexter, then found Shun Brown for a 27-yard score after a punt hit an Oregon player and Arizona recovered. Taylor capped the rout by leaping over a defender into the end zone on a 19-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Up next Oregon hosts UCLA next Saturday. Arizona hosts Colorado next Friday.
