The Weston-McEwen TigerScots (3-4, 2-1) and Grant Union Prospectors (4-4, 2-1) sit in a virtual tie for second in the 2A Special District 6 standings, both having a single league loss to Heppner. The winner in John Day will secure the spot for themselves and take the sec- ond and final playoff spot. “This game feels like we’re playing a mirror image,” said TigerScots coach Tra- vis Glover. “They’re similar to us. They’re a young team, and tough. They’ve always been that way, regardless of players. I think the team that makes ... less mistakes will probably come out on top.” Glover says his team has a couple of “bumps and bruises,” but are excited to close out their season against Grant Union. They’re down a lineman — Calvin Pap- ineau — after he suffered a concussion during a practice last week. “The kids are revved up,” Glover said. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Grant Union High School on Friday. Heppner at Stanfield: The Tigers may have deliv- ered a 53-0 shutout against Staff photo by E.J. Riverside last Friday, but they’ll have their hands full this week. The Tigers will host Hep- pner, which is not only on a six-game winning streak but has locked up the 2A-Spe- cial District 6 title after last week’s 47-14 victory over Grant Union. “Stanfield is a young team and have had a lot of tough losses, but they can play,” said Mustangs coach Greg Grant. “They block well and run hard. We need to make sure we’re ready.” Heppner defensive tackle Matt Orem will sit out for the game after suffering a broken arm from an injury incurred last week outside of football, but other than that, Grant says his team is healthy and ready to send the regular season off with a bang. “Every day, we want to be better than the day before,” he said. “We want to play our best. Friday night is a gift. Our kids are excited to show off the fruits of their labor.” Stanfield (1-6, 1-2) and Heppner (6-2, 3-0) will kick off at 7 p.m. on Friday. Pilot Rock v. Adrian/ Jordan Valley: Coming off of their season’s first loss last week, the Rockets are hoping to regain momentum as they head into a play-in game against Adrian/Jordan Valley on Friday. Pilot Rock (6-1) is the second-ranked team in the 1A Special District 3, West and their opponents (5-3, 4-2) are No. 3 in the East. “Adrian is a fast team with a big fullback,” said Rockets coach Mike Balez- tena. “But I think we’ll match up. Everyone’s play- ing really, really well. There are no more nagging pains.” The Rockets are expect- ing a bit of rain over the field on Friday night — that’s why they’ve been practicing with a wet football all week to adjust. “There’s at least a 60 per- cent chance of rain,” Balez- tena said. “We’re working on our regular passes and game plan with it. Every- one’s healthy and ready to go.” The playoff kicks off at 1 p.m. at Eastern Oregon Uni- versity in La Grande. Echo vs. Gilchrist: The Echo Cougars will close out their first six-man sea- son with a nonleague match against Gilchrist on Saturday. The game is a district crossover event: the Cou- gars hold the No. 3 spot in the 1A-Special District 5, while the Gilchrist Grizzlies are No. 3 in the 1A-Special District 4. “We know they have big running backs, but not a lot of speed,” said Echo coach Rick Thew. “We have that, and that will help us get out- side and into the endzone.” After Saturday, Echo will say goodbye to three key senior players: quarterback Devan Craig, wide receiver Ian Beenblossom, and run- ning back Mychael Pointer. “We know it’s our last week,” Thew said. “We’ve been having fun with our seniors. It’s been a good week to end on, while still getting our x’s and o’s done.” Although the team has won six out of their seven games this season, playoffs aren’t in the cards — the OSAA does not currently have playoff games avail- able for six-man teams. “Hopefully, we’ve had a good enough showing to change their minds and have playoffs going forward,” said Thew. “(The team) is firing on all cylinders. They look hungry and healthy. This is the best I’ve seen one of my teams look at the end of a season.” The game will kick off at 1 p.m. on neutral ground — Madras High School.
