COMMUNITY East Oregonian Page 6A Tuesday, October 23, 2018 BRIEFLY COMMUNITY CALENDAR Flugelhornist jazzes up EOU event TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23 LA GRANDE — A jazz flugelhornist from Centra- lia, Washington, is serving as a visiting artist residency at Eastern Oregon Univer- sity in La Grande. Dmitri Matheny will present a workshop on the music business, work with university students and will play during an evening per- formance. Matheny will present “Music in the Dig- ital Age” Thursday at noon in the EOU choir room, located in Loso Hall, and then will spend time with the EOU 45th Paral- lel Ensemble at 2 p.m. in Groth Recital Hall. Winner of Instrumen- talist of the Year during the recent Seattle Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Awards, Matheny will be joined in the evening from 8-10 p.m. to perform with EOU fac- ulty Matt Cooper (piano) and Luke McKern (bass), as well as drummer Mark Emerson. The free event will be held at Ten Depot Street, La Grande. Fall Festival benefits Pilot Rock schoolhouse project PILOT ROCK — Pump- kin decorating, bobbing for apples, a mummy wrap, pin the spider on the web and more are featured during a Fall Festival fundraiser for the Pilot Rock Historical Schoolhouse. The event is Saturday and Sunday from 6-9 p.m. at the Old Schoolhouse, 241 S.W. Fourth St., Pilot Rock. Walmart drives Ellwood fundraiser HERMISTON — A convoy of Walmart Heart Drivers will depart from the Walmart Distribution Center as they head to the Hermiston Walmart store for a fundraiser to benefit Jasmine Ellwood. The event begins Sat- urday at 9:30 a.m. with a police escort to the local store’s parking lot near the garden center, 1350 N. First St., Hermiston. The gather- ing will be opened in prayer, followed by statements from Hermiston Mayor David Drotzmann, Jasmine and her family. The Herm- iston teen has been battling Ewing sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. The fundraiser will fea- ture a hamburger and hot dog cook-out. Democratic Party serves up spaghetti, auction PENDLETON — The Umatilla County Demo- cratic Party is hosting its second annual spaghetti dinner and auction. Jamie McLeod-Skin- ner, Democratic candidate in Oregon’s 2nd Congres- sional District, is the guest speaker. The event is Sat- urday from 5-8 p.m. in Pio- neer Hall at Blue Mountain Community College, 2411 N.W. Carden Ave., Pend- leton. The cost is $20 per person.
