Page 2B SPORTS East Oregonian Saturday, October 13, 2018 USF rallies to beat Tulsa, still unbeaten By LARRY LEWIS Associated Press Photo contributed by Kristi Cason Heppner’s Blake Wolters runs the ball on Friday in a 55-8 win over Weston-McEwen in Heppner. ROUNDUP: La Grande tops Mac-Hi again Continued from 1B developing right.” The Knights (3-4, 0-2) will try for their first league win against Nyssa next Friday. Meanwhile, Vale (4-3, 2-0) will travel to Umatilla (1-5, 0-2). LA GRANDE 49, MAC-HI 13 — La Grande topped Mac-Hi for the second time this sea- son, this time when they hosted the Pioneers. The Pioneers suffered their first lost against La Grande earlier in the sea- son, when they were defeated at home 48-0. Mac-Hi (0-6, 0-4) is still in search of their first league win, and they’ll get their last shot at one when they host 4A No. 10 team Ontario (3-3, 3-1) next Friday. GRANT UNION 50, RIVERSIDE 0 — The Riverside Pirates are now 0-7 for the season after losing on the road to Grant Union on Friday night. “We played really well in the first quarter,” said Pirates coach David Boor. “But the wheels kind of fell off the wagon afterwards.” Riverside will play their season closer next Friday against Stanfield (0-6, 0-2), who are also in search of their first win. TULSA, Okla. — Coby Weiss made a 22-yard field goal with 2 seconds left and No. 23 South Florida scored 15 points in the final 7:10 to beat Tulsa 25-24 on Friday night. Blake Barnett set up the winning field goal with a 32-yard strike to Tyre McCants to the 5. “The thing about him is that he is so strong and he is elusive,” USF coach Charlie Strong said about the 5-foot- 11, 240-pound McCants. When you tackle him you’d better wrap up because he’s going to break away.” USF was helped on the winning drive by a roughing- the-passer penalty on defen- COLLEGE FOOTBALL USF Tulsa 25 24 sive end Trevis Gipson. “I haven’t seen the play. And I’ve got to be real care- ful what I say,” Tulsa coach Philip Montgomery said. Montgomery obviously wasn’t happy about the call. “All I do know is that is a tough call right there in in that situation at that time in the game,” Montgomery said. Barnett scored on 1- and 12-yard runs to pull the Bulls (6-0, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) within two with 2:10 to go, but was stopped on a two-point conversion run. USF forced Tulsa (1-5, 0-3) into a three-and-out, giving the Bulls the ball back with 1:03 remaining on their own 43 with no timeouts left. “It was great that we were able to pull this game out when we have a national audience when a lot of peo- ple were able to see us,” Strong said. Weiss won the kicking job just before the season started. “I told our guys, we didn’t know who our kicker was, but we know he is now,” Strong said. Jordan Cronkrite, who set a USF and AAC record with 302 yards last week at Runaway Dawg Tyler Huntley passes, runs, catches for TDs, Utah rolls Arizona 42-10 By MATTHEW COLES Associated Press NLCS: Woodruff only 3rd relief pitcher to hit HR Continued from 1B Game 2 is Saturday at Miller Park, with Wade Miley pitching for the Brewers against Hyun-Jin Ryu. The Dodgers did some damage against the Brew- ers’ bullpen. Milwau- kee used seven pitchers, including three score- less innings from Hader. Woodruff threw two per- fect innings and got the win. “But for us to get a look at these guys out of the ’pen in a seven-game series, I think that’s a good thing,” manager Dave Roberts said. Manny Machado hom- ered and drove in three runs for Los Angeles. The Dodgers commit- ted four errors, includ- ing two by catcher Yas- mani Grandal, who also had two passed balls. NERVOUS TIME Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell’s pitch- ing-by-committee strategy continued to be a hit, at least until the late innings. Finally, the hard-throw- ing Knebel restored order by striking out Turner. Knebel walked Joc Peder- son with two outs before Taylor’s long drive. “It’s the postseason and anything can happen, you saw right there. It was a good feeling for it to go our way right there at the end,” Knebel said. DODGER BLUES Kershaw was chased before he could retire a batter in the fourth inning. It was another miser- able October night for the lefty, whose regu- lar-season brilliance has often disappeared in the postseason. UMass, rushed for 151 yards on 25 carries. But outside of a 66-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter that evened it at 10, Cronkrite didn’t do a lot of damage. Sharmari Brooks ran for 100 yards on 28 carries for Tulsa. He had two 10-yard scoring runs in the third quarter to put the Golden Hurricane up 24-10. Barnett completed 17 of 39 passes for 237 yards. Tulsa’s Seth Boomer was 6 of 21 for 71 yards. THE TAKEAWAY Tulsa almost won the game due to not turning the ball over, combined with a strong defense. Coming into the game, Tulsa ranked last in FBS in turnovers and turn- overs per game, and sixth-to- last in turnover margin. Staff photo by E.J. Harris Hermiston’s Wyatt Noland outruns Eisenhower’s Thomas Oplinger in the Bulldogs’ 61-42 win against the Cadets on Friday in Hermiston. SALT LAKE CITY — Tyler Huntley threw for two touchdowns, ran for another and caught a 58-yard TD pass, leading Utah past Arizona 42-10 on Friday night. On a play that typified the game, Huntley handed the ball to Zack Moss, who tossed it to Britain Covey coming the other direction. Covey, a title-winning high school quarterback who is now Utah’s leading receiver, threw a perfect spi- ral to Huntley. Utah (4-2, 2-2 Pac-12) led 35-0 less than two minutes into the sec- ond half. Chase Hansen sacked Khalil Tate by the ankle late in the first quar- ter and the Wildcats’ QB was visi- bly limping after that point. Jamarye Joiner replaced Tate for two series before giving way to Rhett Rodri- guez, who threw for 226 yards and a 42-yard fourth-quarter touchdown to Cedric Peterson for Arizona (3-4, 2-2). Huntley, who went 14 of 19 for 201 yards, lobbed a pass to Samson Nacua for an 8-yard touchdown that capped a 15-play, 75-yard opening drive, marking the longest posses- sion of the season for Utah. In addition to 64 yards rushing, Huntley completed his longest pass of the season (68 yards) down the right sideline to Demari Simpkins in stride for the Utes’ third touchdown.
