Picked a surprising Game 1 starter over fel- low lefty Clayton Kershaw, Ryu delivered in his first postseason start since 2014. The South Korean allowed four singles — all with two outs — struck out eight and walked none. Game 2 in the best-of-five matchup is Friday at Dodger Stadium, with Kershaw starting for Los Angeles against Anibal Sanchez. The Braves have lost eight straight series open- ers in the postseason. The Hermiston Bulldogs were short-handed Thursday night for their Mid-Columbia Conference match against Pasco, but once they got into a rhythm, their game came together. After dropping the first set, Hermiston (3-6) rallied for a 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19 road win over Pasco (0-8). “When you have two middles and one (Haylee Hamilton) goes down, you have to be resourceful,” Hermiston coach Amy Dyck said. “A lot of it was hit or miss. We had half a practice with a new rotation.” Scout Reagan, a 5-foot-6 senior, moved to the middle to replace Hamilton. She led Hermiston with 11 kills, while adding three blocks and six digs. “She played middle last year, so this wasn’t new to her,” Dyck said. “She is a true athlete. It was fun to see her get up and get her rhythm back, When Pasco won the first set, it was just the second it had won this year. Coach Julie Estes said the small victories lead to bigger things. Pasco rallied from a 6-2 defi- cit in the first set, and finally took the lead for good at 13-12. The Bulldogs led by as many as seven points before securing the win. “Every night in this league is tough,” Dyck said. “I’m proud we went three straight to win the match. We are prepared to fight every night.” It was Pasco that had the early lead in the second set, but Herm- iston tied the set at 10-10, then put a little distance between the teams with solid service runs by Emma Combes and Halee Stubbs. Reagan served set point. Hermiston jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the third set, only to see Pasco pull within 23-21 late in the set. Ireland McDonough served for the win. In the final set, the teams were tied at 11-11 before Combes reeled off seven consecutive points for a 19-11 lead. Pasco would fight back to make it 23-19, but would get no closer. McDonough added eight kills and nine digs for Hermiston, while Sophia Streeter had four blocks, Stubbs 29 digs, Kendall Dowdy 21 assists, and Combes 15 digs and five aces. TigerScots score big home victory against Riverside By BRETT KANE East Oregonian There was no stopping the TigerScots on Thursday night. Weston-McEwen’s home game resulted in a 67-0 shutout against the Riverside Pirates. Senior running back Dylan Cain put his team on the score- board early in the first quarter, and freshman running back Levie Phil- lips rushed 39 yards for another score. A 2-point conversion from quarterback Blair Rudolph put the TigerScots ahead 14-0 with two minutes left in the quarter. But they weren’t done scor- ing in the first quarter. Freshman Blaine Peal fired a 40-yard pass to wide receiver Theo White for another score, and a fumble from Riverside running back Andrew Shaw was swiftly recovered by White for a defensive score. The TigerScots led 28-0 at the end of the first quarter. Phillips rushed 47 yards for PREP FOOTBALL Weston-McEwen Riverside 67 0 a touchdown to open the sec- ond quarter. Rudolph later rushed through Riverside’s defense and into the end zone to put Weston-McEwen up 43-0. Tight end Andrew Gambill completed the first half scoring binge with a run to give his team a 49-0 halftime lead. Riverside continued to struggle in the second half. But the Tiger- Scots offense rolled on with Phil- lips and Rudolph scoring touch- downs to make the score 61-0 at the end of the third quarter. The TigerScots scored one more touchdown with 45 seconds left in the game for a final score of 67-0. “This is a good turning point,” said TigerScots coach Travis Glover. “We finally played a com- plete game — everyone did every- thing they could during every single down. (Phillips) played out- standing. He did everything we could’ve asked.” Weston-McEwen will travel to Heppner next Friday, and River- side will hit the road again to play Grant Union. Sports shorts THIS DATE IN SPORTS Ronaldo faces growing heat from Nike LONDON (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo faced growing heat Thursday from sponsors over a rape allegation in the United States after Nike and video game maker EA Sports expressed concern about the conduct of the soccer superstar, who has denied the accusations. The five-time world player of the year, who was seen driving into the Juventus practice complex in the morning, received public backing from the Ital- ian club, which said it would not judge him on the 2009 assault claim by a Nevada woman. The show of support came shortly after Nike broke its silence in a statement to The Associ- ated Press that described the company’s unease over its association with Ronaldo, which started in 2003. The latest terms signed in 2016 are worth a reported $1 billion, and Ronaldo has suggested that it was a deal “for life.” But the Beaverton-based company is troubled by details emerging from a lawsuit filed last week in a Nevada state court by the accuser, who alleges she was raped by Ronaldo in Las Vegas.
