John McCain’s family cries over flag- draped casket PHOENIX (AP) — Cindy McCain pressed her face against the flag-draped cas- ket of her husband, U.S. Sen. John McCain, on Wednes- day and several of his chil- dren sobbed during the first of two services for the states- man and former prisoner of war before he is taken for the last time from the state he has represented since the 1980s. The private service at the Arizona Capitol marked the first appearance of McCain’s family members since the senator died Saturday of brain cancer. It also began two days of official mourn- ing in McCain’s adopted state before his body is taken to Washington for his burial. During the service, Gov. Doug Ducey remembered McCain as a senator and internationally known figure as well as a major figure in the history of Arizona. While Barry Goldwa- ter was an Arizona native, McCain was “Arizona’s favorite adopted son,” the governor said on what would have been the 82nd birthday of McCain, who was born in the Panama Canal Zone while his father served in the military. “Imagining an Arizona without John McCain is like picturing Arizona without the Grand Canyon,” Ducey said. Racism quickly becomes an issue in Florida governor’s race TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Only hours after their pri- mary election victories, Tal- lahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum and U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis made clear the high-profile race in the nation’s largest political bat- tleground state was going to be nasty and racially charged. Gillum, a far-left Demo- crat seeking to become the state’s first black governor, and DeSantis, a Trump-en- dorsed Republican, are politi- cal opposites, both seeking to gin up turnout among the par- ty’s most ardent supporters. Asked if he’s afraid of President Donald Trump’s support for DeSantis, Gil- lum told CNN that his race is about uniting the state. “I actually believe that Florida and its rich diversity are going to be looking for a governor who’s going to bring us together, not divide us. Not misogynist, not rac- ist, not bigots, they’re going to be looking for a governor who is going to appeal to our higher aspirations as a state,” Gillum said. Meanwhile, on Fox News, DeSantis called Gillum an “articulate” candidate, but said “the last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a social- ist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting this state. That is not going to work. It’s not going to be good for Florida.” Black candidates win primaries for governor in 3 states With Andrew Gillum’s upset victory in Florida, black candidates have won the Democratic nomination for governor in three states this year in a historic turn largely attributed to voter backlash against President Donald Trump. Gillum, Stacey Abrams in Georgia and Ben Jealous in Maryland were all aided in recent months by strong turn- out, especially among black voters. “This moment is defined by the politics of Trump and the Republican Party, which are grounded in bigotry, fear and racism,” said Adrianne Shropshire, executive direc- tor of Black PAC. “I think voters are responding to that by showing up to the polls as a protest to the politics that we’re seeing right now.” Voters have elected just two black governors in U.S. history — in 2006 in Massachusetts and 1989 in Virginia. Abrams and Jealous face uphill battles in Novem- ber, while Gillum’s con- test is expected to be close. They will have to figure out how to translate the enthusi- asm among primary voters to the general election, and will have to win over moderate Democrats, independents and probably some Republicans. Fans stream in for 2nd day of Aretha Franklin viewing DETROIT (AP) — Mourners streamed in for a second day Wednesday to pay their respects to Aretha Franklin, who was dressed in a different outfit for her final public viewing, as if making a costume change during a show. Fans waited festively out- side, then walked in a sol- emn, single-file line into the rotunda of Detroit’s Charles H. Wright Museum of Afri- can American History. There, they found Franklin in a pol- ished bronze casket and a sheer baby blue dress with matching shoes, a change from the bright red outfit seen Tuesday across the world. On the inside of the lid, embroi- dered into the fabric, read “Aretha Franklin the Queen of Soul.” The two-day viewing was part of a week of commem- orations for the legend, who died Aug. 16 of pancreatic cancer. She was 76. A mar- athon funeral with an all- star list of speakers and per- formers was scheduled for Friday. Just as Franklin’s more than six decades of music wrought emotions out of her fans, so too did her viewing. As they approached the casket and heaping dis- plays of roses, many people smiled, cried, crossed them- selves, bowed their heads or blew kisses. The strains of Franklin’s gospel recordings echoed in the airy space. Canada stunned, worried about trade threats TORONTO (AP) — It started with President Don- ald Trump’s attacks on Cana- dian dairy farmers. Then Washington slapped tariffs on Canadian steel, citing national security. There was that disastrous G-7 summit in Quebec. Now it’s a new North American free trade agreement that excludes America’s northern neighbor. Canadians are stunned by the repeated broadsides from what has long been their closest ally and some have even begun boycotts. “Everybody is afraid,” said Margot Lajeunesse, who helps run a family-owned bis- tro in Quebec. “We depend a lot on the U.S.” About 75 percent of Can- ada’s exports go to the U.S. so the tariff threat looms large after Trump snubbed Canada and reached a pre- liminary deal with Mexico. Squad Squad 2 PM Pope’s cover-up crisis turns battle lines into first salvo VATICAN CITY (AP) — The author of the bombshell accusation of sex abuse cov- er-up against Pope Francis denied Wednesday he acted out of revenge or anger, breaking his silence as his claims continued to divide a Catholic Church already polarized under Francis’ reformist agenda. While the Vatican is no stranger to scandal, leaks or plots, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano’s j’accuse has weakened a papacy already under fire for Francis’ poor record on dealing with sex abuse cases, and has intensi- fied a long-simmering ideo- logical battle between right and left for the soul of the Catholic Church. Vigano told an Italian journalist he was “serene and at peace” after publish- ing his allegation-laden dec- laration, albeit saddened by subsequent attempts to undermine his credibility. “I spoke out because by now the corruption has arrived at the top of the church hierarchy,” Vigano was quoted as saying. For the church’s conser- vatives, Vigano’s 11-page manifesto, published on Sunday, is a courageous denunciation of sex abuse cover-up and corruption. For Francis’ reformist sup- porters, it’s an angry diatribe from a homophobic bishop embittered that he never got the cardinal’s red hat he so craved.
