COMMUNITY East Oregonian Page 6A Tuesday, August 28, 2018 Oregon Blue Book to showcase state’s festivals Contest seeks photos, student essays By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian Did you capture any awesome images during the recent Uma- tilla County Fair — or are you planning to bring your camera to Pendleton Round-Up? If so, the Oregon Secretary of State’s Office might be interested in see- ing your photos. Amateur photographers who are Oregon residents are encour- aged to submit photos for possi- ble inclusion in the Oregon Blue Book. A contest is being held for the front and back cover pho- tos for the upcoming publica- tion. Photos not selected for the covers may be used elsewhere in the book with credit given to the photographer. The 2019-20 theme is “Cel- ebrating Oregon’s Local Festi- vals.” Photos of local festivals, carnivals, fiestas, county fairs, galas, and other celebrations throughout Oregon would be the most appropriate entries, said Dennis Richardson, Oregon sec- retary of state. In addition to the photo cover contest, the Secre- tary of State’s office invites stu- dents from elementary grades through middle school to submit an essay for the 2019-20 Oregon File photo Aaron Vosler of Cheyenne, Wyoming, leaps from his mount while participating in steer wrestling at a past Pendleton Round-Up. The Oregon Blue Book is seeking photos taken by amateur pho- tographers that depict Oregon’s community festivals. Blue Book. The official state almanac, the book has been published bienni- ally since 1911. It features infor- mation, fun facts, maps, listings, and descriptions of Oregon state government, educational institu- tions, media information, cultural and arts organizations and other points of interest to Oregonians and visitors. “The Oregon Blue Book has been a state icon for over 100 years,” Richardson said. “The Blue Book is filled with great information on over 2,000 areas of interest that make up Oregon.” It features all things Oregon — from absentee voting to avia- tion, banking to butterflies, wages to windsurfing, and much more, Richardson said. The publication is a great resource and a fun read with breathtaking photos of Ore- gon, he added. For the contest, amateur pho- tographers are considered those who earn less than half of their income from landscape photog- raphy. Submissions must be in color, taken in Oregon and in a vertical or “portrait” orientation. For the essay contest, students are asked to answer the question: “What is your favorite local com- munity celebration, festival, car- nival, fiesta, or fair and why?” Participants also are encouraged to illustrate their essays with drawings. The winning photos and stu- dent submissions will be printed in the Oregon Blue Book. In addi- tion, the authors and artists will be invited to the official release party and celebration, held in early 2019 at the Oregon State Capital in Salem. Submissions for both the photo contest and essay submissions must be postmarked by Tuesday, Oct. 16 (Note: photo entries may be submitted via postal service, email or on the website). Students must mail their entry, including their name, grade, teacher’s name, school name and address to: Mary Beth Herkert, State Archivist, Oregon State Archives, 800 Sum- mer St. NE Salem, OR 97310.
