Vera was born November 11, 1930, in Pendleton, Ore- gon, the daughter of Mar- ion and Merle Gaylor Dear- dorff. On July 7, 1959, she married Herman H. Sams in Walla Walla, Wash. She loved horseback riding, hunting, baking (she had a great banana bread recipe) and was an avid reader. Vera worked at Smith Frozen Foods and the Suzi’s Handy Mart until she retired. Holiday gatherings were always at her house and the house was full of sons, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Weston Community Church and the Pioneer Association. Vera was preceded in death by her husband in 1969. She is survived by daugh- ters Daisy Cisneros, Kath- leen Zaragoza and Leona Paredes; sons Will Gall- away and Jim Sams; sis- ters Josephine Smith and Mary Brown; and numer- ous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gwen Orsi Martin, 71, of Pendleton, Oregon, peace- fully passed away on August 13, 2018, at O.H.S.U. In keeping with the wishes of Gwen there will be no funeral service. Gwen Orsi Martin was born on February 3, 1947, to Roy L. and Sylvia B. Orsi. Gwen will be lovingly remembered by her daugh- ter Tanya and son-in-law Chris Galiszewski, and grandchildren Kris Ann (Stephen); Kellie (Austin); Devon; and Helen. For more information, call 541-966-0818 or 1-800-522- 0255, ext. 221. On August 16, 2018, Ber- nice Arline Cary passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her extended family and friends. Her home was where she had lived since 1958. Bernice was born February 1, 1924, in Colville, Washington, to Harry and Beatrice (Sage) Davidson. Her family relo- cated to Pendleton, where she lived Cary since. She was one of nine kids. She married Warren Cary in 1948. Warren had three young sons that Ber- nice loved and cared for. After marrying Warren, they owned and operated Cary’s Tavern and Bernice worked at Harris Pine Mills and then had a long career with the Umatilla County property tax department. While work- ing, she always walked to work and did not drive until she was in her 40s. Bernice loved her family (which included her cats), her home and especially the yard, where you could drive by and see the roses from spring to late fall. Visits from family and friends were dear to her heart, especially from baby Josey, her “adopted” granddaughter. She is survived by her brother Bill Davidson (Joann) of Beaverton, Ore., niece Karen Seivert (Clark) of Wilsonville, Ore., and numerous nieces, nephews, grandkids and great-grand- kids and her extended fam- ily who cared for her after Warren passed away. Visitation will be at Pend- leton Pioneer Chapel Tues- day, August 21, from noon to 4:30 p.m. and a grave- side service will be held on August 22 at Olney Ceme- tery at 11:00 a.m. Billie ‘Sue’ Tolan Hermiston August 31, 1940 - August 16, 2018 Billie “Sue” Tolan of Hermiston was born August 31, 1940, in Spencerville, Oklahoma, the daugh- ter of Wallace and Jessie (Noel) Ammons. She passed away in Hermiston on Thursday, August 16, 2018, at the age of 77. As a young child, Sue moved with her family to the community of Mayville, Ore- gon. She lived in Tolan Mayville through- out her childhood, attending grade school in Mayville and high school in Condon. She has resided in Hermiston for many years. Sue worked in various fields throughout her career, the most recent being a spe- cial educational assistant at Hermiston High School. Sue enjoyed gardening and taking trips to the beach and to the family cabin in Starkey with her family. She was a long time member of Our Lady of Angels Cath- olic Church and actively involved with the Catholic Daughters. Sue married James Tolan in Hermiston, Oregon. She was preceded in death by husband, James; her parents; sister Helen Audette Owens; infant granddaughter Claire Michelle; and infant grand- son Charles Gaston Lilly. She is survived by son John (Debra) Tolan of La Grande; daughter Debra Rene` (Dr. Michael) Har- ris of Bend; daughter Col- leen (Robert) LaFrance of Phoenix, Ariz.; son Scott Lee Owens of Rig- gins, Idaho; daugh- ter Lori Shaw of Lake Stevens, Wash.; daughter Lisa (Kevin) Lilly of St. Joseph, Mo.; son Casey Tolan of Hermiston; daugh- ter Karla (Trevor) Wenning of Keizer; brothers Harold Glen Ammons of Condon and Jimmy Lee Ammons of Summerville; sister Patsy Ann Moffit of Pendleton; 22 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. Sunday •Umatilla Tribal Police arrested Gabriel David Freeman, 23, of Pendleton, for misdemeanors of menacing and domestic abuse. •Morrow County Sheriff’s Office arrested Michael James Hawks, 25, of Heppner, for domestic violence fourth-degree assault, harassment, menacing, second-degree criminal mischief and misdemeanor methamphetamine possession. •Hermiston police arrested Deyma Louise Cantu-Smith, 28, of Hermiston, for second-de- gree theft, first-degree theft (a firearm) and unlawful posses- sion of a firearm. She said she thinks the item has alcohol in it, and the store has other issues she felt police should look into. 11:30 a.m. - Pendleton police received a 911 call from the Brown Building, 110 S.W. Court Ave., for a dispute. 11:37 a.m. - Hermiston police received a request for help with an ongoing elder abuse investigation. 11:56 a.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint about abandoned dogs on Pleasant View Road, Umatilla. 12:59 p.m. - Pendleton police responded to Premium Tire & Lube, 910 S.W. Emigrant Ave., for vandalism at the car wash. 2:25 p.m. - A Morrow County sheriff’s deputy helped an Ione resident on Rhea Creek Road herd goats back into their pasture. 4:21 p.m. - An Irrigon caller reported her stepfather threatened to burn her car with her children inside. The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office responded and determined there was no crime. 7:23 p.m. - Irrigon residents on Power Pole Street reported they now believe they know which dog attacked their rabbits. 8 p.m. - Umatilla police took a report for theft at Umatilla Self Storage, 2541 Highway 730, Umatilla. 10:35 p.m. - A Pendleton 911 caller on Northeast 14th Street reported three vehicles stopped in the road and people were fighting. 11:13 p.m. - Hermiston police received a 911 report for a burglary on the 1100 block of South First Street. Oregon State Police reported the passenger, a 19-year-old woman from Pendleton, suffered minor injuries, and an ambulance took her to St. Anthony Hospital, Pendleton. ARRESTS, CITATIONS Friday •Pendleton police arrested Joshua Ralph Norton, 31,of Pendleton, for a probation violation and felony possession of methamphetamine. Saturday •Stanfield police arrested James Dean Johnson Jr., 32, of Stanfield, for fourth-degree assault, interfering with making report and strangulation. Stanfield police reported Johnson assault a female friend, causing her to suffer a minor injury. Johnson sat on her when she tried to leave and took her phone.
