SPORTS WEDNESDAY, JULY 18, 2018 1B FOLLOW US ON TWITTER @EOSPORTS MLB ALL-STAR GAME Segura helps AL win All-Star Game in extras Record 10 homers hit as AL beats NL 8-6 By BEN WALKER Associated Press WASHINGTON — A record 10 home runs. A slew of strikeouts. The all-or-nothing All-Star Game mirrored what baseball has become. Astros teammates Alex Breg- man and George Springer homered on consecutive pitches to begin the 10th inning, and the American League beat the National League 8-6 Tuesday night for its sixth straight win. Mike Trout, Aaron Judge and Jean Segura also connected for the AL in a game where every run except one scored on a homer. Scooter Gennett hit a tying two- run shot off Seattle closer Edwin Diaz in the bottom of the ninth. Joey Votto, Willson Contreras, Trevor Story, Christian Yelich also went deep for the NL. There had never been more than six homers in an All-Star Game since Babe Ruth hit the very first one in 1933. Not that everything went the sluggers’ way. Starters Max Scher- zer and Chris Sale and the reliev- ers combined to fan 15 in the first 4 1/2 innings, and there were 25 strikeouts overall. Fitting, because this season is on pace to become the first with more strikeouts than hits, a year after a record number of home runs. Community comes through Spaghetti dinner helps Pendleton’s 12U All-Stars raise money for trip to Western Regional By ERIC SINGER East Oregonian P ENDLETON — It has become a yearly tradition for Pendleton’s 12U Little League Softball All-Stars to win the state tournament and make the trip to San Bernardino, California, to compete at the Little League Western Regional Tournament. When the current 12U All-Stars clinched its spot at the regional last week, it marked the third straight year that the Pendleton team will represent the state of Oregon. That means it has also become a yearly tradition of frantic fundraising by the Pendleton coaches and Little League Association to raise enough money in a week’s time to pay for travel and lodg- ing for more than a dozen players and coaches at the tournament that runs from July 21-26. And that is not an easy task. Basing the goal off of the two previous years, Pendleton coaches Scott Wilson, Gordy Schumacher and Brandon Krigbaum pro- jected they’d need more than $10,000 to pay for the entire trip. And with the team needing to depart Pendleton on Wednes- day, that left roughly five days to put the funds together. “From when our game ended on Thursday to right now, we had to get some money together really, really quick,” Wilson said on Tuesday. “It was a pretty big job.” But just as the two previous years, the team easily met its goal thanks to the gen- erous community of Pendleton. Between various fundraisers such as a car wash and Tuesday night’s spaghetti dinner and raffle at the Eagles Lodge in downtown Pendleton, as well as donations from var- ious businesses locally and statewide, Wilson says the team can enjoy the trip comfortably this week. “This community, I’ll tell you what,” Wilson said. “This community and the money they throw at these youth orga- nizations is incredible. I cannot believe how much money we were able to raise so far to get these girls down there. The fact that Pendleton did what they have done is incredible.” A few of the players, who served as waiters, dishwashers and ticket takers at Tuesday evening’s dinner, described the support from people in the community as a “blessing.” “It’s amazing that we have people behind us to help us,” said Lea Wilson. “It shows that there really are kind peo- ple in the world.” The Pendleton All-Stars, which will be playing as Team Oregon at the regional tournament, fly to California on Thurs- day and plays its first game on Saturday against Wyoming at 3 p.m. at Al Hough- ton Stadium. Hermiston’s three-on-three basket- ball tournament also features a slam dunk competition and a 3-point shoot-out. The event runs all day Saturday and Sunday in downtown Hermiston. Food and drink vendors also will be on hand during the event. Previously, there was a three-on-three tournament called the Shake N’ Bake in the mid-’90s. It was held for a handful of years during SpudFest, a now defunct festival. A board of community members was founded in 2005 for planning of the inaugural 2006 Takin’ It To the Streets tournament. The goal is to support youth basketball in Hermiston. More than a decade later, Takin’ It To the Streets is still pounding the pavement — the 2017 event attracted 166 teams from all across the region. Registration is already closed for this year’s tournament. Sometimes last min- ute cancellations provide a chance for teams to join the event. Check out the event’s Facebook page for details. Sports shorts Cambage scores WNBA-record 53 points DALLAS (AP) — Elizabeth Cambage scored 53 points to set a WNBA record Tuesday, lead- ing the Dallas Wings to a 104- 87 victory over the New York Liberty. The 6-foot-8 Australian reached 50 points on a three- point play with 2:19 remain- ing and broke Riquna Wil- liams’ WNBA record of 51 points, set Sept. 8, 2013, on an open 3-pointer from the top of the key. “It’s pretty big,” Cambage said. ‘Holy Grail’ of cards goes on display DENVER (AP) — The “Holy Grail” of baseball cards, a pris- tine 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle valued at several million dol- lars, was delivered to the His- tory Colorado Center on Mon- day via armored truck for a 72-hour public display. “I want the community to enjoy looking at the card,” said its owner, retired lawyer Mar- shall Fogel of Denver. “It’s the finest card ever made, and it just happens to be my favorite player, Mickey Mantle.” The cardboard treasure was transported from a bank’s safe deposit vault and placed in a secure case that once housed Thomas Jefferson’s Bible, with UV-lens protection and tem- perature/humidity control. The card, which Fogel said was insured for $12 million “is probably worth more than that.”
