BRIEFLY Oregon man claims Powerball jackpot; takes $61M lump sum SALEM (AP) — The man who bought a $150 million Powerball ticket in Oregon last month has claimed his prize. Lottery officials said Friday that Steven Nickell carried the winning ticket in his wallet for two weeks before finding out he had all the right numbers in the June 20 drawing. The Salem resident has opted to take a lump sum of $61 million. He and his wife have hired a financial planner and a lawyer, and they plan to be careful with their spending. Their goal is to make sure their family is taken care of for a long time. This is the fifth time a winning Powerball jack- pot ticket has been sold in Oregon. Suicidal climber air-lifted from Mount Hood PORTLAND (AP) — An Oregon Army National Guard has lifted a stranded climber and six rescuers from the summit of Mount Hood. State search and rescue coordinator Scott Lucas tells KGW-TV the climber chose Oregon’s tallest peak as the place to end his life and then changed his mind THURSDAY 8:04 a.m. - Umatilla police saw overflowing garbage and an unlicensed recreational vehicle in the parking lot at Umatilla Inn & Suites, 1370 Sixth St., but was not able to contact anyone with the RV. 10:25 a.m. - Oregon State Police and the Umatilla County Fire District responded to the eastbound side of Interstate 84 near milepost 182 for a vehicle on fire. State police reported the occupant abandoned the Ford Escape after the fire started and the flames fully engulfed the car. 10:36 a.m. - A caller reported trash blocked Lind Road, Umatilla. 11:14 a.m. - A McNary resident asked to speak to Umatilla police about fireworks problems. 12:57 p.m. - Hermiston police received a complaint about a house rental scam on the classified ads website Craigslist.com. The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office contacted search and rescue volun- teers about the situation Thursday, and they found the man Friday morning. Video from the scene shows a group of people around the injured climber. The climber appears to be wrapped in a sleeping bag. The extent of the climb- er’s injury has not been released. Gearhart latest coast city to consider beach wheelchairs GEARHART (AP) — Cannon Beach, Manza- nita and Seaside all pro- vide beach wheelchairs for people with disabilities. Gearhart could be the next North Coast city to try it. The Daily Astorian reports that the man who helped start the Seaside program went the Gearhart City Council this week to propose a similar service. Randy Anderson offered to launch the program by donating a wheelchair. Gearhart Mayor Matt Brown said he’s very inter- ested in seeing the idea come to fruition. Seaside’s beach wheelchair program opened for free public rent- als in July. The sheriff’s office stated this was a civil matter, not a criminal one. 3:58 - A caller reported a fight in progress at West Standard Avenue and Northwest Sixth Street, Hermiston. 5:12 p.m. - The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office responded to a possible domestic disturbance involving a lot of screaming and yelling at a home on Northwest Water Street. A deputy found a mother was screaming at her son over the phone. FRIDAY 1:42 a.m. - A woman at Umatilla Inn & Suites, 1370 Sixth St., reported her boyfriend will not let her in the room or give back her phone. 3:53 a.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a possible party involving minors and alcohol on Colonel Jordan Road, Hermiston. 8:52 a.m. - Pendleton Fire Department responded to Northwest J Avenue and Airport Road on a report of a farm truck hitting a couple of power poles. The driver, however, may have fled the scene in an older Freightliner semi hauling a backhoe westbound on Interstate 84. The driver also may have a suspended license.
