The unexpected ticket to regionals meant the team would have to gather enough funds to send the 11 players, coaches and mandatory parent chaper- ons to Tuscon. “The turn-around time is pretty quick,” Reeser said. “We’ve only had a few days to put all these funds together and it’s been incredible.” Over $20,000 has been raised and team mom Daena Gaines says the donations are still coming. “I’m at a loss for words just regard- ing the generosity and support,” Gaines said, “not just from the towns these girls came from, but we got donations from Pendleton businesses, even a family member of one of the girls that lives in Colorado. “It was a frenzy but everyone kind of kicked it into gear.” From a two-day car wash to the owners at Java Junkies opening up shop on its usual day off to volun- teer their time working with the team to a baked potato feed and donated reclaimed wood decor, members all over Umatilla and Morrow counties pitched in to help Columbia. “All of those communities have stepped up so huge and started putting together funds and resources and we had a van donated and fuel,” Reeser said. “Family members and parents of the team just went crazy. We had some moms step up and do a ton of the work. “When I say community, I mean the whole District 3 region area — they stepped up and made it possible. It was pretty phenomenal to watch.” Columbia’s postseason has also been phenomenal to watch.
