WORLD Wednesday, July 11, 2018 “Everyone is safe:” Daring rescue of Thai soccer team ends MAE SAI, Thailand (AP) — “Everyone is safe.” With those three words posted on Facebook the daring rescue mission to extri- cate 12 boys and their soccer coach from the treacherous confines of a flooded cave in Thailand came to a close on Tuesday — a grueling 18-day ordeal that claimed the life of an experienced diver and riveted people worldwide. Thailand’s Navy SEALs, who were central to the rescue effort, celebrated the feat with a post that read: “All the thirteen Wild Boars are now out of the cave” — a refer- ence to the boys’ soccer team. “We are not sure if this is a miracle, a science, or what.” Eight of the boys were rescued by a team of Thai and international divers on Sunday and Monday. On Tuesday, the final four boys were brought out, along with their coach. Their rescue was followed a few hours later by the safe return of a medic and three SEAL divers who had stayed for days with the boys in their cramped refuge in the cave. Cheers erupted from the doz- ens of volunteers and journalists East Oregonian awaiting news of whether the intri- cate and high-risk rescue mission had succeeded. Helicopters trans- porting the boys roared overhead. People on the street cheered and clapped when ambulances ferrying them on the last leg of their jour- ney from the cave arrived at a hos- pital in Chiang Rai city. Regret, relief at departure of Boris Johnson as top UK envoy LONDON (AP) — Diplomats and politicians around the world were bidding a not-always fond farewell Tuesday to Boris Johnson after the blond foreign secretary’s bombshell resignation. Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said her government would “miss Boris.” But John McKendrick, attorney-general of the British overseas territory of Anguilla, called Johnson “the worst Foreign Secretary we’ve ever had.” Johnson quit Monday with an attack on Prime Minister Theresa May, whom he accused of killing the “dream” of Brexit and leading Britain into the status of European Union “colony.” Not content to send the let- ter, Johnson had himself photo- Page 7A graphed, pen in hand, about to sign it. The image adorned the front page of the Daily Telegraph, a newspaper he once worked for. It was a typically grandiose ges- ture by the attention-hungry Alex- ander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson. Many people were surprised when May gave Johnson the job of Brit- ain’s top diplomat in 2016. The garrulous Conservative lawmaker, sometime journalist and former mayor of London has never been known for tact or diplomacy. Johnson, 54, has earned a rep- utation for gaffes — and a Tef- lon-like ability to survive them — during a long political career.
