(AP) — A man armed with smoke gre- nades and a shotgun attacked journalists at a newspaper in Maryland’s capital Thursday, killing five people before police quickly stormed the building and arrested him, police and witnesses said. Police said the suspect was a white man in his late 30s whose shotgun rampage at The Capital Gazette followed social media threats directed at the newspa- per. A law enforcement official said the suspect has been iden- tified as Jarrod W. Ramos. The official was not authorized to discuss the ongoing investiga- tion by name and spoke on con- dition of anonymity. Authorities said the gun- man entered the building in a targeted attack and “looked for his victims.” He had smoke grenades and fired a shotgun at his victims, according to Anne Arundel County Acting Police Chief William Krampf. “This person was prepared today to come in, this person was prepared to shoot people. His intent was to cause harm,” Krampf said. Among the victims was veteran journalist and colum- nist Rob Hiaasen, 59, brother of novelist Carl Hiaasen. Carl Hiaasen said he was “devas- tated and heartsick” at the loss of his brother, “one of the most gentle and funny people I’ve ever known.” Three other journalists and a staffer were killed: edito- rial page editor Gerald Fisch- man; special publications edi- tor Wendi Winters; writer John McNamara, and sales assistant Rebecca Smith. Krampf said the gunman was a Maryland resident and search warrants were being sought for his home. Davis added: “There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you’re under your desk and then hear the gunman reload.” The attacker had muti- lated his fingers in an appar- ent attempt to make it harder to identify him, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke on condition of anonym- ity. Another official who also spoke on condition of anonym- ity said investigators identified the man using facial recogni- tion technology. The shooting — which came amid months of ver- bal and online attacks on the “fake news media” from poli- ticians and others from Presi- dent Donald Trump on down— prompted New York City police to immediately tighten security at news organizations in the nation’s media capital. At the White House, spokes- woman Lindsay Walters said: “There is no room for violence, and we stick by that. Violence is never tolerated in any form, no matter whom it is against.” Authorities said the suspect was undergoing questioning by detectives. “The shooter has not been very forthcoming, so we don’t have any information yet on motive,” Anne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh said. “To my knowledge, there was no verbal aspect to the incident where he declared his motives or anything else, so at this point we just don’t know.” Krampf confirmed five deaths and said two people had superficial wounds. Police spokesman Lt. Ryan Frashure said officers raced to the scene, arriving in 60 sec- onds, and took the gunman into custody without an exchange of gunfire. About 170 people in all were evacuated from the build- ing as a multitude of police cars and other emergency vehicles converged on the scene. People could be seen leaving the build- ing with their hands up. In an interview with The Capital Gazette’s online site, Davis said it “was like a war zone” inside the newspa- per’s offices — a situation that would be “hard to describe for a while.” “I’m a police reporter. I write about this stuff — not necessarily to this extent, but shootings and death — all the time,” he said. “But as much as I’m going to try to articulate how traumatizing it is to be hid- ing under your desk, you don’t know until you’re there and you feel helpless.” Davis told the paper he and others were still hiding under their desks when the gunman stopped firing. “I don’t know why. I don’t know why he stopped,” he said. GUN: Supporters may propose another petition Continued from 1A describe the types of firearms banned by the measure or the extent of its proposed registra- tion requirements. The measure would have required peo- ple who already own the firearms specified to register them with state police if they wish to keep them legally. Going forward, Oregonians wouldn’t be able to buy those guns, and could only legally obtain them by way of inheritance. Supporters may propose another petition, or multiple petitions, in 2020, says chief peti- tioner Rev. W.J. Mark Knutson. Knutson and other supporters say they made progress in the months since the initia- tive was first proposed. “Every appeal process was used against us, a lot of money was used against us,” Knut- son said. “We have no apologies for our pro- cess. We heard the voices of the young and we moved right in.” Supporters were already contending with a tight turnaround time to get enough signatures by July 6 to make it to the November ballot. They needed 88,184. That timeline became more daunting after multiple legal challenges were filed to the bal- lot title language, and on Wednesday, when the Oregon Supreme Court said that the ballot title needed significant changes before the petition could be circulated. At best, that gave petitioners one day to gather the signatures they needed to qualify for the ballot, since the Attorney General needed time to change the ballot title and for a public comment period. Supporters of another gun control initiative petition, IP 44, which would have imposed new storage requirements on gun owners, withdrew the petition last week due to time constraints and said they’d lobby for those changes in the 2019 session and try to get on the ballot in 2020. Secretary of State Dennis Richardson advo- cated for changes that would allow supporters of a petition to gather signatures after a ballot title has been approved for a petition, but before any legal challenges have been resolved.
