NATION/WORLD Tuesday, June 26, 2018 East Oregonian Page 7A Harley, stung by tariffs, shifts some production overseas MILWAUKEE (AP) — Production of Harley-Da- vidson motorcycles sold in Europe will move from U.S. factories to facilities overseas, the Milwaukee-based com- pany announced Monday, a consequence of the retalia- tory tariffs the EU is impos- ing on American exports in an escalating trade war with the Trump administration. President Donald Trump has used the iconic Ameri- can motorcycle maker as an example of a U.S. business harmed by trade barriers in other countries, but Harley had warned that tariffs could negatively impact its sales. Trump tweeted Monday that he’s surprised that Har- ley-Davidson was first “to wave the White Flag” in the tariff dispute between the U.S. and the European Union. “Surprised that Har- ley-Davidson, of all com- panies, would be the first to wave the White Flag. I fought hard for them and ultimately they will not pay tariffs sell- ing into the E.U., which has hurt us badly on trade, down $151 Billion. Taxes just a Harley excuse - be patient! #MAGA,” Trump tweeted. A Harley-Davidson spokesman said the company had nothing to say in response to Trump’s tweet beyond its filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The European Union on Friday began rolling out tar- iffs on American imports including bourbon, pea- nut butter and orange juice. The EU tariffs on $3.4 bil- lion worth of U.S. prod- ucts are retaliation for duties the Trump administration is imposing on European steel and aluminum. The company said in a regulatory filing Monday that EU tariffs on its motorcy- cles exported from the U.S. jumped between 6 percent and 31 percent, adding about $2,200 per average motorcy- cle exported from the U.S. to the EU. The impact on U.S. work- ers because of Harley-Da- vidson’s decision was not immediately clear. Har- ley-Davidson declined inter- view requests Monday but said in prepared remarks that the company “maintains a strong commitment to U.S.- based manufacturing which is valued by riders globally.” White House press secre- tary Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended Trump’s trade pol- icies Monday during a press briefing. “The EU is attempting to punish U.S. workers with unfair and discriminatory trade policies, and President Trump will continue to push for free, fair and reciprocal trade and hopes that the EU will join us in that,” Sanders said. BRIEFLY Justices won’t hear case of anti-gay marriage florist SEATTLE (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court ordered Washington state courts Monday to take a new look at the case of a florist who refused to provide services for a same-sex wedding, in light of the justices’ recent ruling in a similar case involving a Colorado baker. The order means the Supreme Court is again, for now, passing on the key issue in both cases: whether business owners citing their faith can refuse to com- ply with anti-discrimina- tion laws that protect LGBT people. The 73-year-old flo- rist, Barronelle Stutzman, appealed after Washington’s Supreme Court ruled unan- imously last year that she broke the state’s anti-dis- crimination law by refusing on religious grounds to pro- vide flowers for the wedding of a customer at her Rich- land shop, Arlene’s Flowers, in 2013. Early this month, the Supreme Court issued a lim- ited ruling in favor of Jack Phillips, the proprietor of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Colorado. GOP leaders eye new bill on family separations WASHINGTON (AP) — Struggling to find the votes to pass a sweeping immi- gration overhaul, House Republicans are narrowing on a slimmed-down bill to stem the crisis of separating immigrant families at the border. But even that more mod- est measure hit uncertainty Monday. President Don- ald Trump rejected one top idea — adding more immi- gration judges — insisting it would only lead to graft even though supporters say the step could help expedite the logjam of claims that can prolong detentions. With Congress waver- ing on the next moves, it’s uncertain if lawmakers will be able to swiftly act on any bills to address the border crisis despite an outpour- ing of public concern over reports of immigrant chil- dren being separated from their parents.
