It’s not that the star pitcher doesn’t like baseball, after all he’s put together a stat line that carried the Rockets to the 2018 2A/1A Baseball State Champi- onship, he’s simply just not interested. “I don’t like watching TV,” Thieme admitted. “I think it’s kind of a waste of my time.” The senior that clocks a fast ball in the mid- high 80’s should be interested in collegiate base- ball and have hopes to don the colors of his favorite major league team, but for Thieme, his interest span beyond sports. “I just happen to be good at baseball,” he said. His talents are a combination of hard work and pure athletic ability, not so much being a son of the game or losing sleep over extra-inning wins and nail biting losses of various MLB teams, and his final year in white and blue earned him the honor of All-EO Baseball Player of the Year. The numbers speak for themselves. Thieme ended the season with an 8-1 record, 0.59 ERA, 129 strikeouts and only 10 walks. Offen- sively, he had a .569 average, 26 RBIs, 30 runs scored, six doubles, three triples, one home run and 11 stolen bases. It’s impressive, and at times took even Thieme by surprise. Luis Severino and the Yan- kees boosted the best record in the majors to 50-22. They’ve won four in a row and 17 of 21. “We’ve obviously played well, racked up a lot of wins,” Boone said. “We’ve played well against some of the elite teams.” Seattle, which was 20 games over .500 coming into the Bronx this week, has lost a season-high four straight. New York launched eight hom- See MARINERS/3B NEW YORK — The Phoe- nix Suns stayed close to home for their first No. 1 pick. The Dal- las Mavericks looked all the way to Slovenia for the player they hope can be their next European superstar. Shortly after the Suns took Deandre Ayton to start the NBA draft Thursday night, the Maver- icks traded up two spots for the rights to Luka Doncic. The Atlanta Hawks swapped the rights to Doncic, the No. 3 pick who has spent the last year winning championships all over Europe, to Atlanta for Trae Young, the No. 5 selection from Oklahoma. The Mavericks also gave up a future first-round pick to draft Doncic, who only arrived in New York on Wednesday after help- ing Spain’s Real Madrid win its league championship after he won Euroleague MVP and Final Four MVP honors when they won that title this year. His lengthy European season kept him from working out for teams but he knew the Mavericks were interested in having him on their team for what’s expected to be Dirk Nowitzki’s final NBA season. The Hawks will get perhaps the most exciting player in col- lege basketball last season in Young, the first player to lead the nation in scoring and assists in the same season. See DRAFT/2B
