SPORTS BABE RUTH: White Sox scored 10 runs in fifth Thursday, June 21, 2018 Continued from 1B pulled within one run, 4-3, and had a runner in scoring position. His efforts on the mound were matched with a 1-for-2 outing as the cleanup hitter. Keefer Breashers finished a perfect 2-for-2 while scoring twice and recording an RBI. Eight players from the nine- man roster recorded at least one hit, and six helped bring in runs with Mackey high- lighting those efforts. In the bottom of the sec- ond and the score tied 1-1 — Hodgen’s Cooper Sim- mons took a pitch to the side to advance all runners with the bases loaded in the first and Big John’s Michael Flores popped up a sacrifice RBI to follow — Mackey took the plate with runners on first and second. On the 1-1 count, the shortstop sent the ball on the fair side of the left-field line for an inside- the-park home run that put the White Sox up 4-1. They relinquished the lead in the top of the of the fifth but came back with 10 runs in the bottom of the frame to seal the deal. “It’s a team effort, we’re missing three guys that we had throughout the season — one is injured and the oth- ers are out of town — so, we knew that the only chance that we had tonight was to be able to hit the ball,” Michael Corey said. “They are going to score runs, the Red Sox are a great team, but we had Staff photo by E.J. Harris Hodgen’s Brock Mackey throws the ball to first base in the White Sox’s 16-6 win against Papa John’s in the Pendleton Babe Ruth championship game Wednesday at Bob White Field. to play team baseball and we came out and played well.” The Red Sox returned to the title game for the sec- ond-straight year. Last sea- son, they fell to Thomp- son RV Athletics by a score of 9-8 and battled back this time around to stop that from happening again. Flores got the start for Big John, but was pulled in favor of Andrew Demianew after a tough first inning. Demianew also had trouble keeping the happy-hitting White Sox offense at bay allowing 12 runs off 11 hits in two innings of work. Demianew entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs only to record a huge strikeout — one of only two — to get the Red Sox out of trouble. But just as Hodgen’s offense was heating up against Demianew, Big John’s bats were flying to keep itself in the game early, and it was Demianew that made the biggest impact. He went 2-for-3 on the day with 4 RBI, and only two other Red Sox would record hits. The Big John finished the year 12-4-1 while Hod- gen had nearly a clean sheet going 16-1-1. “It was a great year,” Michael Corey said. “Every year that you coach at the Little League and Babe Ruth level, you always end up with a great group of kids, a different group of kids every year. You spend two months getting to know the kids, learning what their strong suits are and this group came out and from Day 1 they bonded and they were a team.” Now, they are champions. ———— R H E RED SOX 012 03 — 6 4 1 WHITE SOX 130 2(10) — 16 14 0 RS: M. MARINERS: Will try to avoid sweep on Thursday Continued from 1B signature moment,” Stanton said. “Just happy to be able to get it for us.” New York is a season-high 27 games above .500 with the majors’ best record at 49-22. The Yankees have won nine of 11 against Seattle (46- 28) and will try for a three- game series sweep Thursday afternoon. “Until the game is over, we’ve got a chance. It showed tonight,” Stanton said. Aroldis Chapman (3-0) pitched a perfect inning for the win. The Mariners have lost three straight for the first time since April 17-19 against the World Series champion Astros. Seattle starter Felix Her- nandez lasted five innings and 95 pitches. He was charged with two runs, one earned, and six hits. Sanchez drove Alex Colome’s cutter 439 feet off the back wall of the left-cen- ter bullpen, knotting the score at 5. Dee Gordon had two RBIs for the Mariners. Denard Span and Ryon Healy each drove home a run in the fifth, extending Seattle’s advan- tage to 5-0. Yankees rookie Jonathan Loaisiga, making his second major league start in place of injured Masahiro Tanaka, allowed three runs on six hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings. New York broke through in the fifth with two outs and runners on first and second. Aaron Judge hit a broken-bat single to left, scoring Miguel Andujar. Aaron Hicks also came home when Span bob- bled the ball. Gregorius’ sacrifice fly in the seventh made it 5-3. TRAINER’S ROOM Mariners: RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (right shoulder sur- gery) remains in Arizona, where his first rehab start was pushed back due to sore- ness. He was scheduled to play catch Wednesday. ... OF Guillermo Heredia was not in the starting lineup after batting just .122 this month, but entered as a defensive replacement in the seventh. “G is struggling a bit lately,” manager Scott Servais said. BEAVERS’ KWAN LIMITED Oregon State All- Pac-12 center fielder Ste- ven Kwan didn’t start after injuring a hamstring Wednesday against Mis- sissippi State. Nick Mad- rigal took Kwan’s spot as leadoff man. Kwan pinch hit in the eighth and was intentionally walked, and Preston Jones pinch ran for him. ERROR-PRONE OSU Oregon State commit- ted two errors against Car- olina and has six in three CWS games. That’s as many as the Beavers com- mitted in their previous 18 games. The Beavers had come into the CWS as the best fielding team in the field and seventh-best in the country at .980. UP NEXT Oregon State will play Mississippi State on Friday at 12 p.m. in a bracket final. The Beavers would need to win Friday and Saturday to reach the finals. Continued from 1B Rutschman. Carolina wiped out a 3-0 deficit in the third on Brandon Riley’s two-run double off Luke Heimlich and led 4-3 in the fifth on Ike Freeman’s single. Kyle Datres’ hooked Christian Chamberlain’s pitch just inside the left-field foul pole, putting the Tar Heels up 6-3 in the sixth. Jake Mulholland (3-2) pitched three innings of shutout relief for the win. Heimlich, the two-time Pac-12 pitcher of the year, couldn’t make it out of the third inning for a second straight start in Omaha. Heimlich’s appearance at the CWS had drawn mixed reaction from the public. Last year, he left the team for the super regionals and the CWS after it was revealed he had pleaded guilty to molest- ing a young relative when he was 15. The university allowed him to return to the team this year. He served two years’ probation and went through a treatment program but denied wrong- EAST'40OREGON marketplace Place classified ads online at www.eastFSOoregonmarketplace.com or call 1-800-962-2819 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
