East Oregonian The Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon Hall of Fame announced that it added a cowboy, a tribal member, a volunteer and a horse to its group of honorees as a part of the class of 2018, according to a press release. Brad Goodrich of Stanfield was a consistent presence at the Pend- leton Round-Up for three decades, making the short-go finals 25 of the 30 years he competed. A six-time qualifier at the National Finals Rodeo, Goodrich was also a three-time champion at the College National Finals Rodeo as a student at Blue Mountain Com- munity College and Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He stepped back onto the field at Hillsboro Stadium, the very same field where just six months ago he helped his Bulldogs to a OSAA Class 5A state champion- ship. He was joined by some fel- low Bulldogs as Hermiston’s Jon- athan Hinkle and Beau Blake also made the trip. Most importantly, his family was there, yet again. It was something Gutierrez had trou- ble putting into words, but after a grueling four-sport season was thankful for. “It was exciting,” he said of being one of the many seniors to be selected to compete one last time. “It gave me the chance to play one more high school game even after winning the state championship.” The Les Schwab Bowl, in its 71st year, pits the North against the South as each team is filled with the top graduating seniors from Oregon 6A and 5A high schools. Joining the three players from Hermiston was Pendleton’s Nick Bower and Shaw Jerome. When it was time to return to the field, the Beavers were all business. Kyle Nobach hit a three-run homer to put Oregon State in con- trol in the seventh inning, Kevin Abel pitched four strong innings of relief and Oregon State sent Pac- 12 rival Washington home from the College World Series with a 14-5 win on Monday night. “Crazy game. Long day,” Bea- vers coach Pat Casey said. “I thought our guys came out really prepared after the rain delay. We were kind of scuffling out of the chute. Really appreciate the way they hung with it and got them- selves a win.” The Beavers erased early defi- cits, starting their comeback just before the teams were pulled off the field because of lightning near TD Ameritrade Park. THIS DATE IN SPORTS Stanley Cup winning coach Trotz resigns WASHINGTON (AP) – Barry Trotz abruptly stepped down as coach of the Washington Capitals on Monday after failing to agree to terms on a new contract, leaving the newly minted Stanley Cup champions without a coach with the draft coming up later this week and free agency opening next month. Winning the Cup less than two weeks ago triggered a two- year extension for Trotz that would have given him a slight bump in salary to just over $2 million, a person with direct knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team did not announce the extension.
