RECORDS Tuesday, June 5, 2018 PUBLIC SAFETY LOG SATURDAY 12:14 p.m. - Stanfield police received two more odor complaints about 3D Idapro on Hoosier Lane. 12:37 p.m. - A burglary was reported at a rental property on Northeast Douglas Street, Pilot Rock. 3:40 p.m. - Theft was reported at Sand Station Recreation Area, Highway 730, Umatilla. 4:27 p.m. - A vehicle fire that was starting a grass fire at Fox Lane and highway 730, Umatilla, was put out by the Irrigon Fire Department. 4:45 p.m. - Umatilla police were called to Covina Court on a report of an assault. 7:53 p.m. - A Umatilla County sheriff’s deputy took a theft report from a resident of Northeast Riverside Avenue, Pendleton. 10:20 p.m. - Pendleton police broke up an underage party at a residence on Northwest Sixth Street. SUNDAY 12:34 a.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office received a scam report from a resident of Eastside Road, Milton-Freewater. 2:07 a.m. - Pendleton police were called to a reported fight at Hamley’s 8 S.E. Court Ave., but were unable to find any combatants. 5:02 a.m. - A resident of Cain Lane, Irrigon, called dispatch to report his neighbor’s travel trailer was on fire. Fire departments from Irrigon and Boardman, the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office and the Irrigon ambulance responded. 5:24 a.m. - A vehicle drove through a fence at Wilson Lane and Olson Road, Boardman, and the engine compartment caught fire. No one was in the vehicle when the Boardman Fire Department arrived to put out the flames. 8:35 a.m. - A vehicle break-in was reported by a resident of Cobb Road, Milton-Freewater. 11:45 a.m. - A resident of Northwest Stockton Street, Hermiston, reported her son and daughter-in-law were using drugs in a closet. She requested contact from a Hermiston police officer. 4:54 p.m. - Theft was reported by a resident of Sunquist Road, Milton-Freewater. 5:45 p.m. - The Ione Fire Department responded to a fire reported near Willow Creek east of B Street, Ione. ARRESTS, CITATIONS Friday •The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office arrested Anthony John Moore, 32, address not provided, for driving under the influence of intoxicants (alcohol). •Pendleton police arrested Michael Shane Marion, 42, address not provided, on felony charges of aggravated third-de- gree assault and first-degree criminal miscief (two counts), and misdemeanors of menacing, second-degree disorderly conduct (two counts), second-degree criminal mischief and harassment. Saturday •Umatilla Tribal Police arrested Patsy Totsmaywee Jones, 33, address not provided, for third-degree robbery, a felony, and misdemeanor charges of hit and run (injury), reckless driving, recklessly endangering another, second-degree theft and theft by receiving. Sunday •Oregon State Police was called after a woman attempted to buy a firearm at Smitty’s Ace Hardware in Hermiston and was denied because of an active arrest warrant. Troopers arrested Kathi Jo Hamner, 48, of Irrigon at her home for unsworn falsification and for the failure to appear bench warrant. •Umatilla police arrested Dashawn Marquic Hudson, 34, address not provided, for possession of methamphetamine, a felony, and misdemeanor charges of driving while suspended and attempt to elude police. •Christopher M. Allred, 33, address not provided, was arrested by Hermiston police for possession of heroin, second-degree theft (shoplifting) and a felony failure to appear warrant. •Soren Matteus Wolf, 19, address not provided, was arrested by Pendleton police for first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal trespass, second-degree disorderly conduct and third-degree criminal mischief. •Boardman police arrested Sabino Lopez Chingo, 29, address not provided, for DUII and failure to display license. •Oregon State Police arrested Troy Allen Armstrong, 54, Pendleton, for DUII. A breath test at the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton, gave a BAC reading of 0.19%, more than twice the legal limit. •Troopers also arrested Michael L. Patterson, 55, of College Place, Wash., for DUII and violation of open container laws. His BAC was 0.13%. Patterson was transported to St. Anthony Hospital, Pendleton, for medical reasons where he was cited and released to a family member. Lyle James ‘Jim’ Roberts Betty J. Alexander Walla Walla August 31, 1943 - April 7, 2018 Milton-Freewater June 11, 1932 - May 30, 2018 Lyle James (Jim) Roberts, of Walla Walla, Wash., peace- fully passed away at home, surrounded by his family on April 7, 2018. Lyle is survived by his lov- ing wife Bonnie (née Olsen) of Walla Walla; chil- dren Tim and Sunny of Hermiston, John of Walla Walla, Jeff and Julie, Jess and Sheryln of La Grande, and Angella and Troy Shane of Walla Walla; his 10 grandchildren; eight great-grand- children; and sisters Roberts Alice Bartlett, Nora Pointer and Margaret (Peggy) Hubbard of Pendleton. He is preceded in death by his par- ents, Lyle Roland and Wilma (née Sanders) Roberts. Lyle was born on August 31, 1943, in Yreka, Calif. At the age of three, he moved with his family to Dallas, Oregon, then to Pendleton at the age of 9. Eastern Oregon became his home and in 1962 he married Bonnie and they enjoyed nearly 56 years of devoted marriage. Lyle was intentional in his quiet and tireless efforts to meet the needs of those around him, especially his family, and will be remem- bered as an excellent exam- ple of a strong man who always put the needs of oth- ers above his own. He made every decision based on a forward-thinking view of a desired impact or outcome, honest and helpful to those around him. He maintained this commitment to the end and continues to inspire many who witnessed his steadfast- ness to personal beliefs. Lyle worked with his father in farming and ranch- ing before settling down in La Grande. He worked for Boise Cascade for 23 years, retiring to a career as a cor- rections officer at the Eastern Oregon Correctional Insti- tution. He retired from EOCI in 2003, worked briefly with his sons, and then finally retired in 2008. Lyle had a love of law enforce- ment and honorably served his communities as a reserve police officer, leading his sons into that field. In addition to his illustri- ous career, Lyle was a ded- icated Christian and Sun- day school teacher, and was an accomplished educator, teaching firearm safety and personal protection. He ded- icated his time to support his children through their var- ious interests and hobbies. Many will remember him as the starter for thousands of races for the La Grande Swim Club and by his alias, “Bull Ettslinger,” as he shot com- petitively with his sons and friends. Ira Thomas ‘Tom’ Manwell Jr. Pendleton April 22, 1947 - May 29, 2018 Betty Jane Gregory, 71, of Pendleton, Ore., passed away on May 29, 2018. She was born on April 22, 1947, to Charles and Betty (Noe) Roberts in La Junta, Colorado. After graduating high school she met and mar- ried Charles Gregory. They had two daughters. She trav- eled twice to Germany with the children when Charles was stationed there. When she was home with the chil- dren she was part of a mili- tary wives club that offered support and camaraderie to those whose husbands were also stationed abroad. She was an active Seventh-day Adventist. She took great pride in her daughter’s young lives. They were both active in Girl Scouts. Betty taught them to bake cookies and partic- ipated in their bake sales. SCHOLARSHIPS Orem earns OFB memorial scholarship Myers Santana Lopez Pena Wells Hermiston Kiwanis award five scholarships The Hermiston Kiwanis Club recently announced it awarded a handful of $1,000 scholarships. Flor Pena and Laura Wells each received a Perry Johnson Post-Sec- ondary Education Scholarship. Both members of the Hermiston High School class of 2018, Pena has been accepted at several universities and plans to pursue a degree in nursing, and Wells will attend Whitworth Uni- versity to study engineering with a minor in physics. Russell Dorran Memorial Scholar- ships were awarded to Carla Medel, a 2017 HHS graduate who is currently enrolled and studying psychology at Oregon State University; Alexis Myers, who will study agricultural communication at Utah State Univer- sity; and Eric Santana, who plans to enroll at the University of Portland to study accounting and business man- agement. Both Myers and Santana are graduating from HHS this week. The scholarships are given in mem- ory of a pair of past Kiwanis mem- bers. Dorran was a charter member of the club, as well as the Hermiston Elks Lodge, Hermiston Development Corporation and the Blue Mountain Community College board. Johnson was a Baptist minister who supported youth services and education. The scholarship applicants were evaluated on academic achievements, financial need, and leadership and ser- vice activities within their school and community.
