NATION/WORLD East Oregonian Page 6A Friday, June 1, 2018 Comic Samantha Bee apologizes to Ivanka Trump for obscene slur Trump pardons favor celebrities and conservative political causes WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Thursday pardoned a conservative commentator he claims “was treated very unfairly by our gov- ernment!” and announced he’s thinking about clemency for Martha Stewart and former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, among “lots” of other people. “What they did to him was horrible,” Trump told report- ers, speaking of his decision to clear the name of Dinesh D’Souza, who had pleaded guilty to campaign finance fraud. It was the latest Blagojevich example of Trump trying to right a per- ceived wrong with his presidential par- don power, and a move that makes ever clearer that, in the Trump adminis- tration, the odds of a pardon have heav- ily favored those Stewart with a celebrity backer, those who have become a cause celebre among con- servatives and those with a reality TV connection. Trump has been particularly drawn to cases where he believes there was a polit- ical motivation to the prosecutions — a situation that may remind him of his own predicament at the center of special coun- sel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election meddling, which he insists is nothing but a “witch hunt.” On Thursday, Trump said he was seri- ously considering commuting the sen- tence of Blagojevich, the Democratic for- mer governor serving a 14-year prison sentence on numerous counts of cor- ruption, including trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat that was vacated by Barack Obama. The president also said he was consid- ering a pardon for Stewart, the celebrity lifestyle guru who served a stint in federal prison after being convicted of charges related to a stock sale. U.S. tariffs on European steel and aluminum imports are expected after Trump administration’s failure to win concessions from EU. Trump tariffs on U.S. allies draw retaliation threats WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration delivered a gut punch to Amer- ica’s closest allies Thursday, imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum from Europe, Mexico and Canada in a move that drew immediate vows of retaliation. Stock prices slumped amid fears of a trade war, with the Dow Jones industrial aver- age falling nearly 252 points, or 1 percent, to 24,415.84. The import duties threaten to drive up prices for American consumers and companies and are likely to heighten uncertainty for busi- nesses and investors around the globe. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said the tariffs — 25 percent on imported steel, 10 per- cent on aluminum — would take effect Friday. President Donald Trump had originally imposed the tariffs in March, saying a reliance on imported metals threatened national secu- rity. But he exempted Canada, Mexico and the European Union to buy time for negoti- ations — a reprieve set to expire at midnight Thursday. Other countries, including Japan, Ameri- ca’s closest ally in Asia, are already paying the tariffs. The administration’s actions drew fire from Europe, Canada and Mexico and promises to quickly retaliate against U.S. exports. “This is protectionism, pure and simple,” said Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission. French President Emmanuel Macron called the U.S. decision to levy tariffs on the Euro- pean Union “illegal” and a “mistake.” He omi- nously recalled the pre-World War II period saying, “Economic nationalism leads to war. This is exactly what happened in the 1930s.” The EU earlier threatened to counterpunch by targeting U.S. products, including Ken- tucky bourbon, blue jeans and motorcycles. David O’Sullivan, the EU’s ambassador in Washington, said the retaliation will probably be announced in late June. The U.S. tariffs coincide with — and could complicate — the Trump administration’s sep- arate fight over Beijing’s strong-arm tactics to overtake U.S. technological supremacy. Ross is leaving Friday for Beijing for talks aimed at preventing a trade war with China. The world’s two biggest economies have threat- ened to impose tariffs on up to $200 billion worth of each other’s products. The steel and aluminum tariffs could also complicate the administration’s efforts to rene- gotiate the North American Free Trade Agree- ment with Canada and Mexico. NEW YORK (AP) — Comedian Samantha Bee apologized to Ivanka Trump and viewers on Thursday for using an obscenity to describe the pres- ident’s daughter, an incident that quickly thrust her into the middle of the nation’s political divide. Her network, TBS, also said it was “our mistake, too,” in allowing the lan- guage on Bee’s show, “Full Frontal,” on Wednesday. Her show is taped and not aired live. Bee called Ivanka Trump a “feckless c---” toward the end of a segment about President Trump’s immigration policies. She used the slur in urging Ivanka Trump to speak to her father about policies that separate children from their parents. “Put on something tight and low-cut and tell your father to f---ing stop it,” she said. Bee, a former correspondent on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart whose own show has been one of TBS’ big suc- cesses since it started in 2016, said that her language was “inappropriate and inexcusable. “I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it,” she said. Before the apology, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders called Bee’s lan- guage “vile and vicious” and said execu- tives at TBS and corporate parent Time Warner needed to demonstrate that such explicit profanity about female mem- bers of the administration would not be condoned. TBS said Bee had taken the right step in apologizing. The network made no mention of any disciplinary action.
