(AP) — Subtropical Storm Alberto lumbered ashore Monday on the U.S. Gulf Coast, pelting white sand beaches with blustery winds and stinging rain that kept the usual Memorial Day crowds away. Forecasters warned heavy rain, flash flooding and dan- gerous surf posed the big- gest threats as Alberto’s rag- ged core made landfall near Laguna Beach in the Florida Panhandle. A few brief tor- nadoes also were possible in much of Florida and parts of Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama. The National Hurri- cane Center in Miami said at 5 p.m. EDT Monday that Alberto was centered about 15 miles west-northwest of Panama City, Florida. Rough conditions were whipping up big waves off the eastern and northern Gulf Coast, and authorities warned swimmers to stay out of the surf because of life-threatening swells and rip currents. Between four and eight inches of rain could pum- mel Florida Panhandle, east- ern and central Alabama, and western Georgia before the storm moves on. China approves 13 Trump trademarks in three months SHANGHAI (AP) — Ivanka Trump’s brand con- tinues to win foreign trade- marks in China and the Philippines, adding to ques- tions about conflicts of inter- est at the White House, The Associated Press has found. On Sunday, China granted the first daughter’s company final approval for its 13th trademark in the last three months, trademark office records show. Over the same period, the Chinese govern- ment has granted Ivanka Trump’s company provi- sional approval for another eight trademarks, which can be finalized if no objections are raised during a three- month comment period. Taken together, the trade- marks could allow her brand to market a lifetime’s worth of products in China, from baby blankets to cof- fins, and a host of things in between, including per- fume, make-up, bowls, mir- rors, furniture, books, cof- fee, chocolate and honey.
