ROHRMAN RUNS FOR GOLD Hermiston senior sets record, Bulldog girls finish third By ALEXIS MANSANAREZ East Oregonian Pilot Rock senior Sara Weinke went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored to help the Rockets knock off the Union Bobcats 13-7 on Saturday in Heppner, clinching the 2A/1A Special District 6 championship. “I couldn’t be more proud of this group of girls,” Pilot Rock coach Darin Fitzpatrick said. “We lost six starters from last year’s team and some of the girls had to grow up quickly, and they did. And our seniors really stepped up ... they had tremen- dous leadership and helped the younger girls improve.” The Rockets (20-3 overall) and the Bobcats (20-5) have now gone head-to-head 16 times in the past three seasons, includ- ing three straight years in the district championship and twice in the state playoffs. The teams had two wins apiece in the sea- son series coming into Saturday, though the Rockets badly wanted Saturday’s win after Union won a hard-fought 3-2 game for the district title a year ago. Pilot Rock had a big effort from sophomore Ayana Aguilar, as she threw a complete game in the circle while giving up only six hits and two walks and also contributed three hits at the plate as a hitter. Marissa See SOFTBALL/2B E UGENE — Before Hermiston’s Tyler Rohrman competed at the historic Hay- ward Field for the last time, he penned his signature on a National Letter of Intent to Whitworth University to continue his track career. And a couple of months prior, he helped the Bulldogs to a Class 5A football state championship. “No matter what happens, I just feel like my senior year has been like a movie honestly,” Rohrman said on Tuesday. Now after claiming a state championship in the boys 110-meter hurdles and helping Hermiston to an eighth-place finish, the cred- its are rolling on his prep career and Rohrman couldn’t be happier. “I’m on top of the world,” he said after his busy day. “Like I said, it’s a movie and I’m just blessed to be in it.” The self-titled “Roller Coaster Ride of Tyler Rohrman” had plenty of up-and-down moments during the final day of the OSAA State Track and Field Championships. Rohrman competed in four different final events Saturday. First up was the 4x100-me- ter relay. After losing their second leg at districts, the Bulldog squad was now made up of two fresh- man and a sophomore. Rohrman was the only one that had been on the relay team through- out the season, and only Daniel Faaeteete had raced at Hayward Field before. The team put together a time of 44.55 for a 10th-place finish. It wasn’t the start Rohr- man had hoped for, but he wasn’t disappointed either. I just kind of go through the mental states and go along with it. It’s a totally different world.” The compartmentalization helped in the end. Rohrman ran a blistering 14.09 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles for first place and a new state meet record. Pilot Rock proved to be the class of the 2A/1A Special Dis- trict 6 this season as the both the Rockets’ baseball and softball teams earned district champi- onships over the weekend. The district titles were not the only thing the Rockets swept, how- ever, as senior baseball player Levi Thieme and senior soft- ball player Sara Weinke were voted as the district Players of the Year, respectively. See STATE TRACK/3B See ALL-DISTRICT/2B Sports shorts Beavers’ Madrigal, Larnach finalists for Golden Spikes Award USA Baseball announced on Monday that Oregon State base- ball standouts Nick Madrigal and Trevor Larnach are semifinalists for the 2018 Golden Spikes Award. The award is presented annually to college baseball’s top player. Madrigal, who was semifinal- ist last season, is hitting .435 with 27 RBI. Larnach leads the Beavers with 17 home runs and 64 RBI. The finalists will be announced on June 6. No. 1 Ducks advance to Super Regionals EUGENE — Alexis Mack’s two-run single pow- ered the top-seeded Oregon Ducks softball team to a 3-0 win over Drake on Saturday, which finished off a perfect regional and punched the Ducks’ ticket to the NCAA Super Regionals. The game was scoreless until the fifth, when Mia Camuso and Lauren Lindvall both singled and Jenna Liley was intentionally walked to bring Mack up with one out. She singled to left to score a pair and Haley Cruse followed with a run-scoring single to end the scoring. Miranda Elish pitched all seven innings and struck out 11 while allowing only five hits and two runs.
