(AP) — Problems first identified six years ago at a Washington state plant where deadly nuclear waste is supposed to be treated in the future continue to plague the multi-billion dollar facility, U.S. investigators have said. The Tri-City Herald reports that the Government Accountability Office said in a report released Tuesday that the site’s contractor, Bechtel National, has not fully completed planned actions. And the corrections that have been made have not prevented continuing quality assurance problems. The report also criticized the Department of Energy for its oversight of the project. The $17 billion plant has been under construction since 2002 to turn up to 56 million gallons of radioactive waste into a glass form that would be buried at another site. The waste is a leftover from the past production of plutonium for the nation’s nuclear weapons program. The sprawling Hanford site in eastern Washington state is temporarily storing the radioactive and toxic wastes in underground tanks on the site. PORTLAND (AP) — Some 65 positions at the headquarters of Oregon’s largest school district have been slashed in a major reorganization. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports according to records obtained by the newspaper, 31 people were laid off and 30 vacant jobs were eliminated. Four additional employees resigned, retired or transferred within the district. Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero announced the cuts Monday. Communications, information technology and operations took significant hits. The senior director of equity and partnerships, the deputy human resources officer position and the senior directors of curriculum and instruction and teaching and learning were also eliminated. Guerrero’s announcement blamed the reorganization on budget woes, saying it was necessary to slash central office to avoid cuts to schools. Two high-level employees, Chief Operating Officer Jerry Vincent and Chief Strategic Officer Laura Parker, resigned amid the reorganization. OSU student sets fire, jumps out dorm window CORVALLIS (AP) — Oregon State University authorities say a student experiencing a mental health crisis set a fire in his dorm room before jumping from the fifth floor window. University officials say Oregon State Patrol troopers responded to campus in Corvallis Tuesday evening involving the welfare of a student and resident of Hawley Hall. OSU’s vice president for marketing and university relations Steve Clark told the Gazette Times that there were statements made that could be construed as aggressive and threatening so officials weren’t taking anything for granted. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports that Clark says the unidentified male student jumped from the dorm’s top floor around 10:30 p.m. He was then taken into custody and to a hospital. Hanford was established during World War II and made the plutonium for the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. The 560-square-mile site also made most of the plutonium for the nation’s nuclear arsenal during the Cold War. The accountability office recommended ordering Bechtel to find out the full extent of problems at the vitrification plant that would turn the waste into molten glass. The office’s report also said Energy Department employees are under pres- sure to get part of the plant up and running and that two quality assurance experts said department managers and Bechtel prioritize cost and sticking to schedules more than identifying poten- tial problems. The investigators said Energy Department officials should halt work in areas in which construction quality problems are recurring. In a written response to the report, Energy Depart- ment Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management Anne White said plant working conditions meet all established requirements. (AP) — A disability advocate organization is suing Washington State Penitentiary, claiming it keeps low-risk inmates with mental illness in cells for 16 hours a day and limits their recreational activities so they can receive treatment. The Walla Walla Union-Bulletin reports Disability Rights Washington filed the suit Monday claiming the prison has violated the federal Americans with Disabilities Act by keeping these inmates in high-security units. The organization began looking into the matter late last year after receiving complaints from inmates who claimed their mental-health treatment at the facility was different to other prisons. (AP) — A 21-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm in the shooting death of a man over an alleged drug debt. The Union-Bulletin reports Robert G. Sregzinski pleaded not guilty Monday in connection with the death of 34-year-old Gabriel Rodriguez in Walla Walla. In a probable cause statement filed in Walla Walla Superior Court, police say Sregzinski shot and killed Rodriguez April 21, 2016. Court records say Sregzinski was involved in a shootout with Milton- Freewater police a week later after he fled from a traffic stop.
