ERMISTON — Mother nature has not been kind for local track and field athletes this spring. Heavy rainshowers wiped out a meet in Pendleton to begin the season, and a mixture of gray clouds, cold tempera- tures, light rains and high, steady winds have been a constant visitor for nearly every meet of the season. However, on Friday afternoon, the weather was finally on the athletes’ side. Blue skies and sunshine covered Hermiston High’s Kennison Field and temperatures sat in the low 70s for Hermiston’s annual Kiwanis Invita- tional, which was a pleasant sight to the athletes competing. “It was a big stress reliever,” Pendle- ton’s Edwin Linares said of the weather. “It makes me hope there are going to be more sunny days ahead and less rainy ones. I was getting tired of the rainy season, having to bring sweats every where.” Ten different schools — Hermiston, Pendleton, Kamiakin, Chiawana, Hanford, The Dalles, La Grande, Baker, Moses Lake, Mac-Hi — and hundreds of athletes littered the grounds of Kennison Field for the meet, which brought a lot of good competition for the local schools. See INVITE/4B M’s rally past Rangers 6-2 Segura keys 4-run 9th inning By SCHUYLER DIXON Associated Press ARLINGTON, Texas — Jean Segura and the Seattle Mariners figured five straight games scoring two runs or less were more than enough. Segura hit a two-run double in a four-run ninth inning after Mitch Haniger’s tying homer in the eighth, lifting the Mariners over the Texas Rangers 6-2 on Friday night. Seattle had dropped four of the five games during the offensive skid, which ended with three hits apiece from Segura and Haniger and 14 total. The late runs came after the Mariners scored just once despite having a runner at second with no outs in each of the first four innings. “We were due to put a rally together,” manager Scott Servais said. “We certainly had a lot of chances earlier in the ballgame. Our situational hitting and some other stuff, our execution wasn’t very good early.” The liner to right center from Segura chased Texas closer Keone Kela (2-1), who gave up singles to Daniel Vogelbach and Dee Gordon and got his only out on Guillermo Heredia’s sacrifice bunt. Haniger’s fifth homer was a two-out shot to the berm in center field against Chris Martin. Haniger and Kyle Seager added RBI singles in the ninth off Jake Diekman as the Rangers remained the only team in the majors without a win in a series opener, dropping to 0-7. Juan Nicasio (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth, and Edwin Diaz struck out two in the ninth around a walk and a hit batter. See MARINERS/3B AP Photo/Richard W. Martha Karolyi led the national team for 15 years before retiring after the 2016 Rio Olympics. She tells Savannah Guthrie in “no way” did she suspect Larry Nassar was sexually abusing athletes under the guise of treatment. “The whole gymnastics community couldn’t recognize this,” Martha Karolyi said in an excerpt provided to The Associated Press on Friday by NBC. “Everybody said, ‘Larry Nassar is a good doctor. Larry Nassar is a good guy.’” Curry cleared for modified practice OAKLAND, Calif.
