The Riverhawks walked 14 Buckaroos in the game, eight of which came in the final two Buckaroo at-bats. Ryan Russell’s bases- loaded walk with two outs in the fifth inning gave the Buckaroos the lead back at 9-8, one they would not relinquish this time. “We talk patience at the plate and in the zone we want to be aggressive. They (The Dalles) had some troubles throwing strikes and we took advantage of it,” Haguewood said. “Guys had good at-bats, they fouled off pitches with two strikes and we battled in those situations and worked the walks.” While staying patient, the Buckaroos also came through with some clutch hits. In the second, Tucker Zander flared a RBI single to right and then Cam Sandford ripped a two-RBI single to left for an early 3-0 lead. Trailing 5-3 in the third, Ryan Stahl blooped a single into shallow center field that scored a run to get the Buckaroos back in the game. Pendleton had tremen- dous balance in its lineup as all starters aside from leadoff hitter Gabe Umbarger recorded at least one hit. The bottom third of the order contributed five hits and five RBI in the game, highlighted by the No. 9 hitter Sandford’s 3-for-3 day with a double, three RBI and one run scored. “It felt great,” Sandford said. “The first time in a while I’ve felt that good (batting) and I’m starting to get back into it.” Aside from Sandford, several Buckaroos contrib- uted a lot to the offense. Catcher Justin Duso chipped in two hits with a double and an RBI, Bower scored three runs and had a double and two RBI, and Tyler Chich- ester walked three times, scored three times and drove in two runs. And Stahl earned the win on the mound after he threw 2 1/3 shutout innings of relief in his first game back in nearly a week after suffering a concussion. Stahl struck out four and walked three, and gave up only two hits. “(He) was huge for us,” Haguewood said. “He’s a bulldog on the hill. He got tired a bit in that last inning, he hasn’t thrown bullpens for the last couple of days, but he threw great in the rest and he did a great job.” Now Pendleton prepares for a doubleheader with the defending league champion Hood River Valley on Saturday, and Haguewood is keeping the team focused. “It’s obviously good to start 3-0, but I told the boys we still have an uphill battle,” he said. “We play every game pitch by pitch and we can’t get too far ahead. SOFTBALL: Brehaut, Garton lead the Buckaroos’ offensive output Continued from 1B “I thought we did a lot of nice things,” Cary said. “The defense was solid, the pitching was good and we hit well. We just need to kind doing what we’re doing at this point.” And at this point, Pend- leton is rolling through their schedule. After facing the Riverhawks (7-8-1, 0-3) just four days ago to open league play — a double- header which included 49 Pendleton hits and a victory margin of 33 runs over both games — the Bucks didn’t know if it was going to see their No. 1 pitcher or again face an understaffed team. The injury-ridden Dalles squad didn’t bring their ace, and instead put Kilee Hoylman in the circle which was no match for the top of Pendleton’s lineup. Even though the Bucks didn’t tally double-digit hits, they came out strong powered by Aspen Garton and Alexi Brehaut. The two combined for six RBI and five hits, and were the driving force behind Pendleton’s six-run fourth inning. Garton’s two-RBI single and Brehaut’s RBI double — Pendleton’s only extra base hit — helped push the lead to 8-0 as the Bucks were on the verge of enforcing the 10-run rule. Two batters later, Brehaut stole home and Kila Solomon hit a line drive down the center to reach the game winning score. The hits came at a good time, as much of Pendleton’s early efforts to reach base were either via walk or hit by pitch. Pitching the shut out was Lauren Richards, who by all accounts was well prepared to see a team she had just thrown 12 innings against. She surrendered only four hits, as the defense was playing like a well oiled machine, but it was Richards’ own offense that gave her the extra boost to go the distance striking out five and only walking one. “I love how great my team can hit, that’s some- thing we’re good at,” Rich- ards said. “I love having that to back me up and I can always count on my lineup to help me have confidence in the circle.” Richards, along with the complete game, went 1-for-2 at the plate and brought in a lone run that was sandwiched between two other scores in the second inning. After going up in the first off a Brehaut single to center field, Sami Spriet scored on a passed ball in the second inning, which was followed by Richards sacrifice fly and then another RBI single but this time from Garton. “We’re coming into league super strong,” Rich- ards said. “We’re showing the teams what we can bring so we’ve got a lot of positive to look forward too.” The Bucks will take this win on the road when they travel to face the Hood River Valley Eagles for a doubleheader on Saturday. ——— R H TDHS 000 00X X — 0 4 PHS 130 6XX X — 10 8 (TD) K.
