Anthony Ibarra won the boys pole vault after clearing 11-feet. Julian Gutierrez leaped 19-05.75 to a new personal best and second-place finish in the long jump, and took second (5-10.00) in the high jump as well. Mark Quinnonez improved on his previous personal best of 119-00 in the javelin throw and claimed second place after recording 133-06, and in shot put, Joel Escamilla was another Viking to finish second after throwing 37-11.00. TIGERSCOTS BRING THE SPEED Weston-McEwen’s Jacob Speed swept his competition in the boys 100- and 200-meter dash finishing 11.53 and 23.71, respectively. Teammate Kellen McGill finished just behind Speed in the 100-meters in second place (11.93). Speed also anchored both boys relay teams, helping the TigerScots finish first in the 4x100 (45.82) and first in the 4x200 (3:40.97). In the girls 400-meter dash, Ellie Scheibner grimaced through the final 100-meters to grab first place with a time of 1:04.03. Scheibner beat out Pilot Rock’s Abby Rigby by 0.26 of a second after. “As I was coming down the last 100, my legs cramped up a little bit but that’s when you just have to pump your arms and get through it,” Scheibner said of her race. The TigerScots’ girls relay teams were strong as well, finishing first in the 4x100 (54.46) and second in the 4x400 (4:29.04), with Scheibner a key part of both. The TigerScot boys tallied 84 points for a second place finish, and the girls finished with 81 to round out the top three of the 15-team field. SMALL SCHOOLS FARE WELL The large field of competition allowed some smaller teams to get in on the action. In the 1,500-meters, Ione’s Hayden Qualls finished in first place finish after clocking a new personal best of 4:23.59 and again in the 3,000-meters after a time of 9:51.78. Staff photos by E.J. For the girls, Helix’s Hannah Christman ran 2:32.56 to finish first in the 800-meters and fellow Grizzly Lucy Case followed that up with top finish in the 1,500-meters with a time of 5:22.00. HERMISTON JV BRINGS ONE OF LARGEST GROUPS With the varsity squad at TrackTown USA for the Oregon Relays, the junior varsity team filtered into Umatilla and was the biggest schools in attendance. Using their numbers to their advantage, the Bulldog boys finished in a two-way tie for second place (84 points) with Weston- McEwen. The girls team also finished second but by a much narrower margin. They were one-point shy of tying first-place Umatilla and were the only other team to finish the day over 100 points with 105. For the boys, Gregory Anderson claimed a second place finish in the 3,000-meters (10:01.09) and Guiomar Garay had a consistent day in the jumping pits as he finished third in triple jump (37-03.00) and fourth in long jump (18-01.00). Leading the girls was the 4x100 relay team of Kamryn Aldred, Dyanara Ramirez, Abigail Sharon and Jessica Miranda Sanchez which ran to a second place finish in 55.13 seconds. Staying on the track, Madison Anderholdm, Fatima Izaquirre- Frasser and Anahy Lomas Duenez placed second-fourth in the 3,000-meters. In field events, Sheridan Deike finished first in discus (96-feet) and Jazmin Deike was second (88-04.50). Sheridan Deike also finished first in shot put (30-08.00), while Hannah Walker was third in pole vault (7-feet), and McKayla Pacheco third in triple jump (29-08.00). BUCKS SHOW STRENGTH Pendleton crept up in the team standings after some top finishes on the track and in the field events. Mathias Patrick swept the boys hurdling events after earning first in the 110-meter hurdles (16.59) a new personal record of 44.71 in the 300-meter hurdles. In a fast field, Ian Bannister finished fourth in (56.26) in the boys 400-meter dash. In the girls high jump, Zoe Jones beat out some tough competition and cleared 4-feet-6 for a first-place finish. Megan Burchard finished third (4-04.00) in the same event. Burchard also competed in the girls pole vault where she settled into second place (7-06.00). GRANT UNION 19-24, WESTON-MCEWEN 3-5 — At John Day, the Weston- McEwen TigerScots had a tough day as they lost both games of a doubleheader by wide margins as Grant Union won with scores of 19-3 and 24-5 on Friday. Jordyn Lambert had the best day for any TigerScot (2-6 overall) hitter, going a combined 5-for-8 with two home runs and a double, four RBI and three runs scored. Skyler Walter also had a double and Brittany McGill had two hits. BASEBALL IRRIGON 5-2, JOSEPH 4-12 — At Joseph, the Irrigon Knights split a doubleheader with the Joseph Eagles on Friday, as the Knights won Game 1 by a 5-4 score and then Joseph took the final game 12-2. In the only win for the Knights (7-5 overall, 3-2 Eastern Oregon League) in Game 1, Irrigon scored all five of its runs in the fifth inning. Trailing 2-0, Adrian Roa drew a bases-loaded walk to get the Knights on the board and then Zach Henrichs hit a two-run double to give the Knights a 3-2 lead. Irrigon added two more runs on a passed ball and a Joseph error. Henrichs pitched 6 1/3 innings and struck out seven while allowing seven hits and four runs to earn the win. In Game 2, Joseph’s offense peppered Irrigon’s pitching early and often, scoring 11 of its 12 runs in the first three innings. TRACK & FIELD OREGON RELAYS — At Eugene, the Hermiston Bulldogs top athletes traveled to the University of Oregon campus on Friday to compete in Day 1 of the Oregon Relays at historic Hayward Field. Of the Bulldogs competing on Friday, boys high jumper Jackson Morgan by far had the best day. The senior finished in second place with a jump of 1.88 meters, only 0.07 meters behind first place. Also finishing well was senior Antonio Fernandez in boys shot put, where he finished ninth after a throw of 14.49 meters. Jonathan Hinkle finished No. 48 in the boys 100-meter dash prelims with a time of 12.07, nearly one second off the pace of the leaders. On the girls side, sprinter Scout Reagan had the best finish at No. 19 in the 100-meter dash prelims with a time of 13.10. Stephanie Miears finished 36th in shot put with a throw of 23.38 meters.
