Several weeks ago archaeological observers on the pipeline project spotted a bone while crews were digging about 10 miles south of Stanfield in the Butter Creek drainage. Paleontologists examined the bone and further digging revealed tools, which is when archaeologists got involved in the site. The find is believed to be an animal processing area used by American Indians, said Tom Marteau, a cultural resource specialist. Martin helps the company managing the pipeline project, Bectell, enforce environ- mental laws regulating the digging. More than 1,000 bones were unearthed in nine days of digging. Most were cracked, broken and often burned, which led researchers to conclude it was likely the bones themselves that were being processed, said Clay Lebow, field work coordinator for Infotech.
