Page 2B SPORTS East Oregonian Tuesday, April 3, 2018 ROUNDUP: Willard was Pendleton’s top placer in shot put Continued from 1B 13th (89-09). Sara Scott was eighth in javelin with a throw of 97-05. In the pole vault, two Bucks made up half of the four-way tie for 10th place as Doria Summerfield and Natalie White both cleared 7-00.00. For the boys, Lane Maher was just 0.04 seconds shy of third place in the 110-meter hurdles when he finished in 16.09. Mathias Patrick placed sixth (16.45) in the same event. Both times were new personal records for the hurdlers. Maher also turned in a personal-best time of 42.72 in the 300 meter hurdles to finish in third place, while Richard Scott was fifth (44.21). In the 400-meter dash, Aaron Luke had a personal best time of 55.06 to claim seventh place. In the field events, Pendle- ton’s Edwin Linares finished fifth (18-11.25) in the long jump, trailing three jumpers that all recorded 19-plus feet. Linares also competed in the high jump, where he finished in a two-way tie for seventh place after soaring 5-06.00. Linares competed the trio of jumping events by placing fifth in the triple jump. He recorded 39-03.50, just inching past a jumper from Southridge to finish in the top five. Everett Willard was Pendleton’s top placer in shot put, throwing 41 feet even for seventh place and a new personal best. Syler Rimbach, the only Buckaroo pole vaulter, placed eighth with a new personal record of 11 feet. BASEBALL HERMISTON BULL- DOGS — At Keizer, things were looking promising for the Hermiston Bulldogs in the final day of play at the Volcano Stadium Tourney on Saturday. After going winless in the first two days of play, Herm- iston was up 3-0 early against Aloha — a 6A team out of the Metro League that had beat the Bulldogs 1-0 on Friday. The early lead was capped off with a two-RBI single off the bat of Lukas Tolan that scored Brylee Dufloth and Landon Jones. But the Warriors began to chip away at their deficit and ended up taking the game, 12-6, after an eight-run sixth inning. Until that point the Warriors (4-4) had only four hits to their name. Caden Schwirse was given the loss after toeing the rubber for 4 1/3 innings, allowing six hits off six runs and striking out two. In Game 2 versus McNary, Hermiston didn’t have enough offense to keep up with the Celtics as the Bulldogs had just two runs and two hits in a 12-2 loss. Wyatt Noland took the loss after pitching one inning of relief and allowing three hits and four runs while striking out one and walking zero. Noland was Hermisotn’s top hitter on the day with two hits and two runs scored, while Tolan had two RBI. JOSEPH 15-9, MAC-HI 1-6 — At Milton-Freewater, the Mac-Hi Pioneers were swept 15-1 and 9-6 in a doubleheader against the Joseph Eagles on Saturday afternoon. In Game 1, the Pioneers (3-2) were only able to get one run on the board on a second-inning RBI double to right off the bat of Eric Rencken that brought home Rudy Esparza, who had doubled himself. Staff photo by Kathy Aney Everett Willard, of Pendleton, gets ready to throw the shot put Saturday at the Clay Lewis Invite. Willard’s toss of 41-00.00 earned him seventh place. Joseph scored the bulk of its runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and then exploded in the seventh with seven runs to reach 15 on the day. Matt Cunnington and Esparza each had two hits to lead Mac-Hi. In the second game, the Pioneers struck first, but also managed to keep their hitting up throughout the game. After Esparza scored on a wild pitch in the second, Mac-Hi brought in five more runs in the fourth and fifth innings. But Joseph responded and the Eagles completed the sweep behind their late efforts. Anthony Hardesty finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and Devin Humbert was 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run. SOFTBALL UNION SPRING BASH — The Pilot Rock/Nixyaawii softball team had an early start at the Union Spring Bash on Saturday, and were joined by Bonanza, Union and Weston-McEwen. The Rockets (7-1) played their first of two games at 9 a.m., and came away with a 12-1 victory in six innings against Bonanza. Pilot Rock followed that up with a game against Colton and left with a lopsided 19-2 victory. For Weston-McEwen (0-4) the TigerScots came back to Athena winless after losing to Colton 8-7 and then to Union 14-4 in six innings. Against Colton, Amie Coffman, Jordyn Lambert, Skyler Walter and Lilyan Duckett all picked up extra-base hits, all recording doubles. Lambert was respon- sible for two of the seven runs that kept the TigerScots in the game. However, in their next outing Weston-McEwen didn’t fare as well. Lambert and Duckett highlighted the TigerScots’ efforts, both going 1-for-3 and each recording a run but when their scoring stopped, the Bobcats’ started. Nine of Union’s 14 runs were scored in the final three innings of play and, after going up 10, the game was cut short after six innings. MAC-HI PIONEERS — At Milton-Freewater, the Mac-Hi Pioneers finished off their spring break tourna- ment on Saturday with two victories, defeating Junction City 9-6 and then shutting out Yamhill-Carlton 6-0. Against Yamhill-Carlton, Mac-Hi pitchers Sydney Earls and McKenna Stallings combined for a no-hitter, allowing only two walks in the game while tossing six strikeouts. The Pioneers (7-2) started the scoring in the first inning with a solo home run off the bat of Ashlyn Marly, who finished the game 3-for-4. Then in the fifth, the Pioneers added five runs highlighted by a RBI double from Anney Banek and a two-RBI double from Rachael Lyon. Against Junction City, the Pioneers trailed the Tigers 3-0 after Mariah Ohman got the scoring started with home run over center field. But Mac-Hi answered with four runs of its own. Faith Kelly hit a three-RBI triple to right field to get the Pioneers on the board and later scored to put Mac-Hi ahead 4-3. From there, the Pioneers never let up scoring again in the fourth, fifth and seventh inning. Sydney Earls earned the win after pitching seven innings, striking out two and walking zero. TENNIS WESTON-MCEWEN 7, PENDLETON 4 — On Monday, the Weston- McEwen TigerScots’ boys tennis team defeated the Pendleton Buckaroos 4-1 in Athena, while the TigerScots and Buckaroos’ girls teams tied 3-3 in Pendleton. In the girls matches, the Buckaroos won all three singles matches with Bethany Flanagan, Abby Williams and Emma Florence earning victories. The TigerScots won all three doubles matches. Janelle Martinez had an impressive win in No. 1 singles, defeating La Grande’s Alyssa Forsberg in a third set tiebreak to win 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5). Harris Hermiston senior Grace Blackhurst tees off on the ninth hole Monday at the Wild- horse Invitational in Mission. Hanford’s Tyler Andersen and Gabe Cach as well as The Dalles’ Aiden Telles finished in a three-way tie for first with a six-over 78, though Telles took home the first place medal after winning in a playoff. However, Andersen and Cach’s performances still helped their Hanford team to a runaway victory for the boys team title, as the Falcons’ score of 318 bested The Dalles (341) by 23 strokes. The Pendleton boys team finished tied for third with La Grande with 355 points. Behind Geier’s 79, Trevor Reyes scored an 86, Seth Wood a 92, Kaden Murphy a 98 and Sawyer Powell a 106. Herm- iston finished fifth with a score of 378, led by Garrett McCla- nahan and Cody Thacker each with 90s, Blue Blackhurst’s 91, and Conner Scott’s 107. The Mac-Hi Pioneers also competed and finished seventh in the team standings with a 402. Leading the Pioneers was Carson Chester with a 91, Noah Wilson with a 97, Kodi Leiden- frost with a 101 and Cameron Shannon with a 113. The girls’ race for the team title was a lot tighter than the boys’, where Hermiston squeezed out the victory by just seven strokes over Pomeroy by a score of 405-412. Bulldogs’ head coach Joshua Browning was very pleased with the outcome, given the tough conditions the golfers faced, while the Bulldogs’ five-girl team was pretty surprised by the win. “It feels great. The condi- tions were pretty tough but they stuck with it,” Browning said. “I talked to a couple of the girls during the round and they were having a hard time. So (winning) was unexpected for them. I thought they were still in it throughout, but it was still unexpected in the end.” The Bulldogs were led by senior Grace Blackhurst and freshman Madison McCla- nahan in the round. Blackhurst finished only four shots off the lead with an 88, still good enough for third place, while McClanahan’s 98 was good enough for fourth place. Rounding out the Bulldogs’ scorecard was Leslie Browning with a 106, Mykah Kram- wiede with a 113 and Morgan Browning with a 126. “It might be the best team score we’ve had at this course, especially with the conditions,” Browning said. Pendleton’s Megan George had a strong showing again as she finished tied for first after 18 holes after shooting an 84. It sent George into a playoff for the second time in three tournaments this season, this time facing Pomeroy’s Deana Caruso on Wildhorse’s first hole. However, Caruso defeated George 5-7 in the playoff to take home the first place medal. Pendleton’s only other competitor on the day was Makenzie McLeod, who lost a scorecard tiebreaker to Pome- roy’s Karrie Gould to finish sixth overall after shooting an even 100. Mac-Hi’s Megan Norton was the only Pioneer competing and finished with a 104. ———— Contact Eric at esinger@ eastoregonian.com or 541-966- 0839. Follow him on Twitter @ ByEricSinger.
