Christopher Reese retired after nearly 23 years of military service in a ceremony, March 3, 2018, at the Anderson Readiness Center in Salem. Rees most recently served as the Strategic Plans Officer (G-5) for the Oregon Army National Guard (Land Component Command), assisting with planning operations and training for more than 6,000 soldiers. Prior to his most recent assignment, he commanded the Recruiting and Retention Command for three and a half years. He graduated from Hermiston High School in 1991 and earned a bachelor’s degree in crim- inal justice from Western Oregon State College in 1995. He also holds a Master of Public Adminis- tration degree from Murray State University. Rees began his military career as a U.S. Army ROTC cadet through Oregon State University in 1992 and was commis- sioned as a second lieu- tenant in aviation in 1995. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Contributed photo Retired Brig. Gen. Todd A. Plimpton presents Oregon Army Nation- al Guard Col. Award-winning author Kate Wilhelm dies at 89 EUGENE (AP) — Award-winning science fiction writer Kate Wilhelm has died at 89. Her son Richard Wilhelm said in a Face- book post that his mother died March 8 in Eugene, Oregon, following a brief illness. Kate Wilhelm wrote more than 60 works in science fiction, fantasy and mystery, including the Hugo Award-winning novel “Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang.” Richard Wilhelm told The Register-Guard newspaper of Eugene that his mother started writing science fiction when the field was dominated by men. Rather than space- ships and gadgets, he says his mother was focused on characters, and why they were in particular situations. Wilhelm was also known for writer work- shops she established with her late husband Damon Knight. Wilhelm and Knight are both members of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. Chapter CM Alison Furnish Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a woman seeking financial assistance for educational expenses leading to a career in the medical profession. Applicants must be of sophomore standing at an institute of higher learning and be a graduate from Pendleton, Pilot Rock, Weston-McEwen, Helix, Nixyaawii or Ukiah high schools. The amount of the scholarship will be provided directly to the recipient’s school. Applications must include a cover letter including the applicant’s name, mailing address, phone contact, institution’s name and address of the financial aid office; a statement of not more than 300 words summarizing the applicant’s career goals, educational plans, need for the scholarship and any special circumstances; two letters of recommendation, one from a school-related person and one from a person not related to the student through school or family; a college transcript showing proof of sophomore standing; and proof of graduation from one of the qualifying high schools. Completed applications must be postmarked by April 30, 2018.
