His team held a narrow 53-47 lead, that was once an advantage of over 10 points, but the Bulldogs Girls willed their way back Basketball into the game and cut their deficit to only Hermiston three points with just over a minute to play. Herm - iston senior Pendleton H a n n a h Thompson converted the and-1 into a three point play to push the score to 53-50 in favor of the Bucks. Thompson had been heating up in the second half, which made Porter and company nervous. “Their outside shooters got hot, Hannah Thompson, she got hot and I was getting a little nervous there,” Porter said after the game. “But we just kept saying, ‘Next play, next play.’ If they get one there, so what, we’ve got another play coming.” Make that another five plays for the Bucks, as they pulled away with the 61-52 victory over the Bulldogs at Warberg Court, keeping Pendleton undefeated in conference play. After the team’s came out of a timeout with 1:04 left on the game clock, Hermiston junior Sydney Stefani tried for a 3-pointer to tie the game. The missed shot fell into the hands of Pendleton senior Kalan McGlothan — who was fouled and banked both free throw attempts to put the Bucks up by two possessions. The Bulldogs, however, weren’t giving up. Junior Jordan Thomas forced her way inside for a lay-up to cut the deficit to 55-52. This is when Pendleton needed another big play. The Bucks (15-6 overall, 6-0 Columbia River Conference) By ERIC SINGER East Oregonian PENDLETON — As a first-year varsity player last season, Hermiston’s Cesar Ortiz carved out a role as a streaky, but lethal, 3-point shooter off the bench. As a junior this year, Ortiz has really worked to develop more Boys aspects of his game and get away from being a Basketball one-dimensional player. He flashed the growth of his game during Friday’s Hermiston matchup with Pendleton, working for rebounds in the post, driving to the hoop to create offense, and showing quicker feet on defense to help slow Pendleton down a talented Pendleton offense. However, Ortiz’s lethal shooting touch from behind the arch is still there, too, which he used to knock down four key 3-pointers and score a team-high 18 points to help his Bull- dogs knock off the Buckaroos 66-55 in front of a packed house at Pendleton’s Warberg Court. Davies was fouled hard at half court, and at the charity stripe made her two free throws. On the ensuing play, Davies towered over the Bulldogs for a big-time blocked shot on Thomas that fellow senior Rylee Gentner secured. To seal the game-winning score, another senior — one of five on the roster — Hallie Porter, knocked down a jumper in front of Pendleton’s bench that sent the crowd into a frenzy. “It’s always great to hear all the competitiveness from all the student crowds, chanting against each other, all of the support that’s behind you is incredible,” Davies said. “It just makes you want to do better and show everyone what our team can do as a whole.” With the win, the Bucks have all but secured their place atop the league standings. Only three games remain on the regular season schedule, ending with one final matchup against the Bulldogs (8-13, 4-2) in Herm- iston. Prep Roundup Pendleton third, Hermiston fourth after Day 1 at district tournament East Oregonian REDMOND — Pendleton wrestling coach Fred Phillips felt good about the draws his Buckaroo wrestlers received for the district tournament, but emphasized that it was up to his kids to follow through and earn the points. After the first day of the Class 5A Special District 4 tournament on Friday in Redmond, the Buckaroos followed through pretty well. Pendleton’s 19 wrestlers scored 93.5 points to sit in third place, just ahead of Hermiston in fourth with 85.0 points. Seven Buckaroos moved on to the quarterfinal round, sitting just one win away from securing a trip to the state tournament. “For the most part, we’re pretty pleased with how today went, honestly,” Phillips said. “But tomorrow (Day 2) is where we make our money. We put ourselves in a position to have a great tournament, and now we have to keep going.” At 126-pounds, both No. 2 Alex Rendon and No. 4 Chris Chambers advanced to the quarterfinals, as Rendon won twice by fall and Cham- bers had a bye and a win by major decision. Rendon now faces Hood River Valley’s Chad Muenzer and Cham- bers draws No. 1 seed Beau Ohlson from Mountain View, who carries a 39-0 record on the season. Brendon Bedolla (138) won twice and faces No. 2 seed Steven Preston from The Dalles and Aiden Patterson (160) earned two wins by fall and faces No. 1 Clayton Elrod from Redmond, and Kirk Liscom (170) won by fall and by a decision and will face No. 1 Frankie Lesowske in the quarters. Pendleton and Hermiston will meet up at 145 and 195 in the quarters, as the Buckaroos Blake Davis will face Bulldogs’ A.J. Tuia at 145 and Hermiston’s Joey Gutierrez gets Pendleton’s Aiden Henderson at 220. Gutierrez’s only match on Friday featured a win by fall in just 17 seconds. The Bulldogs have six other wrestlers in the quar- terfinals: Alice Todryk (113) will face Redmond’s Diego Suganuma, Ruben Madrigal (106) gets Mountain View’s Nick Valenti, Gage Shipley (120) faces Mountain View’s Carsen Johnson, Zach Kirkpatrick (160) faces Redmond’s Austin Carter, Sean Stewart (220) faces Ridgeview’s Logan Shenk, and Beau Blake (285) gets Hood River’s Adrian Ramirez. Mountain View (167) and Redmond (118.5) hold the top two spots in the team standings. (AP) — Dustin Johnson apparently has an issue with the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula only when the weather is ugly. Under a gorgeous sky Friday, the world’s No. 1 player shot a 7-under 64 and shared the 36-hole lead with Beau Hossler in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Johnson opened with three straight birdies, including a 9-iron on the par-3 11th. The weather was so foul last year that he hit 4-iron. (AP) — Katie McWilliams made a pair of free throws with 1.1 seconds left in overtime and No. 16 Oregon State escaped with a 63-61 victory over Washington State on Friday. WSU’s Maria Kostourkova made 1 of 2 free throws with 1.9 seconds remaining to tie the game. McWilliams took a long inbounds pass and was fouled by Kostourkova while shooting. Washington State (10-15, 3-10 Pac-12) led by two after a 3-point play by Borislava Hristova with 16 seconds left in regulation but McWilliams scored underneath off an inbounds pass to tie at 50 with a second to go. Goodman hit five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 17 points. Marie Gulich scored 15 points to pass 1,000 in her career and grabbed 16 rebounds, and Pivec added 12 points for the Beavers (18-6, 9-4).
