The group was excited to welcome several members of the Irrigon High School Key Club. A student club, they partner with local Kiwanis groups to make a positive impact by serving others in their school and community. Ken and Jan Evans will be cele- brating their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, December 16 at 1 p.m. at the Hermiston Christian Center’s Hardin Event Center, 1825 W. Morrow County schools salute veterans Contributed photo Hermiston seniors give thanks for holiday meal The Hermiston Senior Center hosted a gathering of 65 people for its annual Thanksgiving dinner. The Nov. 16 event was held in the parish hall at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, which has been serving as a temporary meal site for the seniors while their new building is under construction. Celebrations were held in the Morrow County School District to honor those serving our country during special Veterans Day programs. At A.C. Houghton Elementary School in Irrigon, the Umatil- la-Irrigon Lions Club presented a program. Afterwards, each fi rst grade student was given a small United States fl ag. Irrigon Jr./Sr. High School teacher Andrew Johnson, who is currently serving in the Oregon National Guard, shared about his service. Student presentations included a song by Clara Sexton- Funk, and Jocelyn Dyer read an essay she wrote. In addition, Liz Perez, Liz Nunez and Alex Walls shared pieces written by fellow students. Also, Boy Scout Troop #602 presented the colors and the high school pep band played the national anthem. At Sam Boardman Elementary School, music teacher Heather Noble led students in performing patriotic songs. Also, second and third grade students presented the history of Veterans Day, the Pledge of Alle- giance and gave cards to veterans in attendance. The Boardman Police Explorers provided the color guard. School — concluding with a lunch for the veterans and their families. Veterans visited class- rooms where staff and students were eager to hear fi rst-hand experiences of men and women in uniform. After classroom visits, everyone gathered in the gym and each veteran received a gift. The band and choir performed “Armed Forces on Parade” and “Already Home.” And a video presentation featured pictures of the veterans during their time in the military. Former Heppner math teacher David Melville was the honored guest speaker. He shared about sacrifi ces that veterans and their families make and urged students to continue to support veterans. A roll call was held recognizing each veteran that included their name, rank, branch of service and dates of enlistment. Strong Clouds roll in over the Blue Mountains Despite some early autumn snow in September, barely a light dusting was visible earlier this week on the Blue Mountains over Pearson Creek near Pilot Rock. Altrusans reach out to needy students Altrusa International of Pendleton recently received a pair of grants that will assist in supporting a couple of youth-focused projects. The Wildhorse Foun- dation awarded a $10,000 grant. Half of it will go to the Feed the Child program, which helps ensure needy students have food to eat over the weekend. The other half of the Wildhorse grant is going to the KARE (Kids At Risk Empowered) program. In addition, the Altrusa Inter- national Foundation gave $2,000 for the KARE project. The KARE program centers around helping meet the needs of homeless students in the Pendleton School District. Altrusa, who received information about student needs from the school district, is initially focusing on 30 homeless students with the greatest needs. As support for the program increases, the Altrusans hope to provide help to additional homeless students. Individuals, groups or businesses can sponsor students in the program. KARE serves students from elementary school through high school. Last spring, the average cost to provide for a KARE student was $200- $300. A group of students from McLoughlin High School recently dished up lunch for several Milton-Freewater Rotary Club luncheons. Teacher Erica Good- year and 14 members of the culinary class provided meals for the weekly meetings during the month of November, said Robert Robbins of the Rotary Club. Among the local visiting Rotar- ians who got a taste of the student cooking were Larry Givins and George Murdock, Umatilla County commissioners; Paul Chalmers, Umatilla County assessment and taxation director; Dan Primus, Umatilla County district attorney; and Pat Hart, Rotary assistant governor and a member of the Hermiston Rotary Club.
