RECORDS Friday, December 1, 2017 East Oregonian PUBLIC SAFETY LOG WEDNESDAY 9:38 a.m. - A 26-year-old man collapsed due to a back injury while working on a roof at a construction site on West Sperry Street, Heppner. The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Heppner ambulance and volunteer fire depart- ment with getting the man off the roof. The ambulance took him to Pioneer Memorial Hospital, Heppner. 10:21 a.m. - Milton-Freewater police took a report for the theft of items from Desires, the adult toy and smoking paraphernalia shop at 15 N. Columbia St. 11:01 a.m. - Residents on Alder Court, Stanfield, drew a complaint for shooting pellet or BB guns at a tree and fence in the neighbor’s backyard. 11:12 a.m. - A caller at McNary Heights Elementary School, 120 Columbia Ave., Umatilla, told police that men “the other morning” yelled at children as they walked to school. 12:02 p.m. - An electrical company’s work van ripped out a stop sign on Southeast Brandon Street, Irrigon, at the intersection with Utah Street. The caller who reported the incident said his friend has video of the incident. The caller also said he planned to complain to the company. 2:20 p.m. - Boardman-area residents near the bombing range off Tower Road could hear a couple of demolition explosions Friday between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. The time of the blasts were weather dependent. 3:13 p.m. - Pendleton police responded to a fight at Grecian Heights Park, 1910 S.W. Athens Ave., Pendleton. 6:17 p.m. - An Irrigon resident on Southeast 10th Street complained that the nearby Columbia View Community Church, 1230 Highway 730, was too loud. She said she suffered from migraines and the noise from the church was “causing issues for her.” 9:16 p.m. - A caller on Baxter Road, Hermiston, reported the theft of two handguns, two rifles and one shotgun. ARRESTS, CITATIONS •The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office issued a citation for maintaining a dog as a public nuisance to a Heppner resident on the 100 block of North Main Street after her puppies entered a neighbor’s property. The sheriff’s office also cited an Irrigon resident for the same violation after a neighbor on Knapp Street reported a brindle pit bull attacked and may have killed her goat. •Hermiston police arrested Danny Edgar Covarrubias, 25, of 38 Apple Court, Umatilla, for five counts of second-degree forgery and five counts of identity theft, along with one count each of first- and second-degree theft. •Pendleton officers at 5:49 p.m. responded to a report of fraud at the Circle K, 335 S.E. Court Ave., and arrested Rebecca Jo Baker, 34, no address provided, for first-degree forgery, first-degree possession of a forged instrument, interfering with a peace officer and second-degree trespass. •Oregon State Police arrested Edgar Armando Soto, 25, of Stanfield, for driving under the influence of intoxicants. The arrest came at about 9:50 p.m. when a trooper stopped a westbound Saturn Ion on Interstate 84 near milepost 153 for speeding at 92 mph on the 70 mph road. State police also reported Soto was “visibly intoxicated” and had a blood-al- cohol level of .17 percent, more than twice the .08 percent legal limit. Keith was born November 3, 1944, in Enterprise, Oregon, to Ruth and Greg Barton. Keith’s early years were spent in Joseph, Oregon, where he attended school, and loved the wonderful outdoor setting provided for fishing and hunting. At the age of 17 he joined the Army and Barton served in Germany. The family eventually moved to Umatilla, Oregon. After Keith’s honorable discharge from the Army he lived and worked in the Umatilla area and also attended Blue Mountain Community College. Keith married Gerry Migles and from the marriage a beautiful daughter, Toni, was born. Keith was a handyman who had a variety of jobs including construction, maintaining bowling alleys, and working for the city of Umatilla. The last several years Keith resided in Caldwell and Boise, Idaho, to be close to family. His parents, Ruth and Greg, preceded Keith in death. He leaves a daughter Toni, sisters Marilee Moors, Wendy Tunison (Mike) and Gwen Nussbacher (Walt), and brothers Scott (Janis), Tim (Glenda), and Randy Barton. Keith will be cremated with a private burial at the veterans cemetery in Boise, Idaho. A public cele- bration of Keith’s life will be announced later in the spring. The family is grateful for the many friends and employees Keith met and laughed with at Apex Assisted Living Center. The family also wants to thank St. Alphonsus for the profes- sional care he received from the doctors and staff. James Berton “Jim” Piper was born on March 9, 1940, in New Plymouth, Idaho, to parents Jim and Hannah Piper. He passed away with his family by his side on November 29, 2017, in Richland, Washington, at the age of 77 years. Jim graduated from Hermiston High School in the class of 1958. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served for 20 years, retiring as a TSgt. After 20 years of moving around Piper with the military, the family returned to Hermiston in 1978. Jim worked at Lamb Weston for a short time before enrolling in the diesel mechanic program at BMCC. He completed the program and worked for JR Simplot for 10 years before moving to Irrigon where he raised calves. He married Ethelyn Doney and they later divorced. Jim married Hermie Jackson on December 10, 1984, in Irrigon, Oregon. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, his flowers and garden. Jim was a member of the VFW Post #4750. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Hermie Piper; sons Greg (Beth) Piper, Scott (Suzanne) Feeney and Roger Jackson; daughters Lorie (Cory) Clark, Jeanne (Paul) Dohr- mann, Michelle Piper, Cheryl Hammon, Kathy Piper, Shirley (Gary) David, Joyce (Tony) Carollo, Wanda (Blaine) Johnson and Kathy (Joe) Chandler; a sister, Gladys Walker; 32 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchil- dren; one great- great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Hannah Piper, brothers Gene and Donny, and a son, Brian. A celebration of life service with military honors will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at Burns Mortuary chapel, Hermiston, Oregon. Health center sets open house East Oregonian An open house is planned during the annual holiday celebration of the Northeast Oregon Area Health Education Center. PENDLETON Author shares haunting story of WW II hunger march By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian David Dorfmeier, a Vietnam veteran and a clin- ical therapist with a special focus on treating post-trau- matic stress disorder, shares about his father’s experi- ences in World War II. Dorfmeier, who wrote “C-Lager: Stalag Luft IV and the 86-Day Hunger March,” recounts the service history of Sgt. Donald D. Dorfmeier and the air war in Europe. The story also chronicles the heroism of airmen who exhibited the courage to survive. The difficult march resulted in hardships and suffering that would “haunt them for many years to come,” Dorfmeier said. An author presentation, which includes a slide show, is Saturday, Dec. 9 at 11 a.m. at the Pendleton Public Library, 502 S.W. Dorion Ave. Admission is free. Maj. Leslie Caplan, an American flight surgeon, said conditions during the march included bitter weather, living in filth and surviving on starvation rations. “Hundreds of men suffered from malnutrition, dysentery, tuberculosis and other diseases,” Caplan is quoted in the Congressional Record. The younger Dorfmeier also served in the Army Reserve and was employed for 20 years with the Depart- ment of the Army providing clinical counseling services to active duty soldiers and their family members.
