Page 8A BUSINESS East Oregonian Saturday, November 18, 2017 HERMISTON Computer shop back open after technician shortage By JADE MCDOWELL East Oregonian A Hermiston computer shop is back open for business again after Amazon hired away all of its tech- nicians. “They’re defi nitely in high demand right now,” said Jon Farrester, whose hiring allowed M2 Netnerds to re-open after being closed for almost a month. Amazon, under the name VaData, has multiple data centers at the Port of Umatilla and Port of Morrow, and is working to construct more off Westland Road in Herm- iston and Lind Road near Umatilla. Umatilla County Commissioner Bill Elfering has said in the past that each building represents 40 to 60 employees. The stand will be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week in the Aaron’s parking lot at 2225 S.W. Court Place near Wal-Mart. the business is still looking to hire more technicians. M2 Netnerds offers home services — including fi le recovery, virus removal, networking and refurbishing — as well as IT consulting and other services for businesses. With the addition of Farrester, the shop has now added web services such as website design and search engine optimization. Farrester said he hails from the Bend area, where he had his own computer business for years and also worked as the Jefferson County School District webmaster. In addition to owning M2 Netnerds, Calame also owns M2 Machmedia, a wireless internet provider. M2 Netnerds is located at 1565 N. First St., Suite B, next to Quiznos Subs. BRIEFLY Walmart celebrates completion of major remodel Project connects workforce PENDLETON — More than a dozen employers and other representatives will be on hand for the Employer Pipeline Project. The effort is an initiative between Umatilla County, CAPECO, Eastern Oregon Business Source and the Pendleton School District to promote a homegrown workforce. The idea is to connect high school graduates with employers to fi ll open positions. The upcoming meeting is Monday from noon to 1 p.m. in the community room at Pendleton City Hall, 500 S.W. PENDLETON — Walmrt employees crowded the company’s Pendleton store Friday, Nov. 10 to celebrate the completion of a major remodel. But the benefactors were local charities. The remodel took 12 weeks and includes better store fl ow, an updated electronics department and a new fabrics department. Store manager Shawna Nuff said she was glad to have a fabric table back in the store. Local charities also were part of the reopening. Nuff presented the following donations: $500 to Dream Catcher Therapeutics; $1,000 to Domestic Violence Services; $2,000 to Relay for Life; and $2,183 to the Children’s Rodeo. The store’s celebration continued Nov. 11 with a party for customers that included music, free samples. customer giveaways and activities for children. Barhyte rules at World Food Championships U.S. Cellular dials in store manager for two towns PENDLETON — Barhyte Specialty Foods of Pendleton with its Saucy Mama line claimed two fi rst place prizes at the recent World Food Championships. The competition took place Nov. 8-12 in Orange Beach, Alabama, and drew 450 teams, according to a statement from the organization. Cooks and chefs from 14 countries and more than 40 states competed in 10 categories ranging from barbecue to dessert to seafood. Saucy Mama team member Kim Banick of Salem took fi rst place in seafood with her “Alabama Crawfi sh Thai Bowl with Coconut Gulf Shrimp,” and Rebecka Evans from Houston won the bacon championship with her “Dutch Crunch Baby Pancakes.” The 10 fi rst place winners will move on to the WFC’s Final Table in April 2018 for the ultimate bragging rights and a $100,000 prize purse. Suzie Barhyte, Saucy Mama herself, was thrilled and will be there cheering on her two entries. Another Saucy Mama team member, Lisa Keys of Pennsylvania, placed second in recipe with her “Fried Chicken on a Steamed Bun,” and a fourth team member, Heather Walker of Phoenix, placed fi rst in a “Chopped” type run-off of those not making top 10 in their category with her “Upside Pineapple Cake with Cream Cheese-Brie Frosting.” Organizer Mike McCloud commented the World Food Championships might have to change to the Saucy Mama Competition.
