But the shot from Armando Ramirez-Cardenas in the 17th minutes found the net to give Riverside a 1-0 lead. Senior Kevin Madrigal had the assist. The score opened the game up for the Pirates and sent a message to the Eagles, who came fi ring back after the fi rst goal of the night. “We needed that (goal),” senior Jose Peralta said. “They were attacking well, but our goal set them back. ... We were expecting them to come in hard, and knew they wanted to defend their title.” The Eagles fi rst half efforts were left there, and had little chance of coming back after the break. Riverside opened the second half with goals on NEWBERG — Ever since the St. Paul Bucka- roos handed the Heppner Mustangs a 40-0 shellacking on Sept. 1 at Les Payne Field, the Mustangs had hoped for a rematch with the Buckaroos. Heppner got its wish on Saturday afternoon as the No. 8 Mustangs played the No. 1 Buckaroos in the Class 2A Quarterfi nals. The Mustangs knew how far they had come since Week 1 and wanted to get revenge. However, the Buckaroos showed why they are unbeaten to this point and ranked No. 1 as they defeated the Mustangs 26-0 at Newberg High School. Heppner’s defense came out with a solid plan against the Buckaroos (10-0 overall) offense, stuffi ng the run up the middle and holding the Buckaroos scoreless through the fi rst quarter. The defense played a solid game overall, but eventually St. Paul broke through by utilizing jet sweeps and passes to the fl ats to stretch the Mustangs (6-4) defense to pile up 358 yards of total offense. “The outcome didn’t come as we planned but I feel like we had a good game against them,” Heppner senior Coby Dougherty said afterward. “They’re just a really tough team and they deserved it.” Dougherty was part of a Mustang backfi eld that had really hit a groove over the last six games, but wasn’t able to get going against the Buckaroos defense. The No. 1 Riverside Pirates pitted against the No. 2 Catlin Gabel Eagles. Both teams went undefeated. Both boasted big victories and had nine shutouts a piece. Both teams deserved to play in the 3A/2A/1A state championship match. On Saturday, the two schools met at Liberty High School in Hillsboro. Recently, the Pirates and Eagles ended an early meeting with a 2-2 draw but this time around, the outcome was very different. “I’m shocked, about the score — that’s the only thing I’m shocked about is the score,” assistant coach Jose Duenas said. “We knew we had a really good team — we had the right 3A/2A/1A CHAMPIONSHIP Catlin Gabel Riverside 1 4 pieces for the right team and everything worked out.” The 4-1 victory didn’t come without some heart-stopping moments. To start, the Eagles (12-1-5 overall) and the Pirates (17-0-1) were trading attacks which put both goalies to work early. Riverside’s freshman keeper Gerardo Lopez made two key back-to-back stops that easily could have given Catlin Gabel the lead. The Pirates Prep Football Bulldogs advance to semifi nals after 40-22 victory over Rebels Hermiston uses run game, defense to beat South Albany By ALEXIS MANSANAREZ East Oregonian HERMISTON — The Hermiston football team entered the week focused, with their season-long goal in the back of their minds. Going into Friday’s Class 5A Quarterfi nal game, Hermiston was one of eight teams left standing in the state after 10 long weeks of football. Now, the No. 3 Bulldogs are one of only four teams left after routing the No. 6 South Albany Rebels 40-22 at Kennison Field. It was Hermiston’s fourth consecutive game scoring 40 or more points, and its sixth of the season. The high scoring affair was thanks to big plays on all three sides of the ball. Friday night opened with a 60-plus-yard kickoff return from senior Dayshawn Neal that set up Hermiston’s fi rst scoring drive — a two-yard connection between quar- terback Andrew James and running back Jonathan Hinkle. These fi rst two minutes set the tone as the Bulldogs (9-2 overall) went on to score 21 unanswered points seconds before halftime. “If we have a good start it honestly makes the rest of the game — you have to set the tone,” junior Youbani Razon said. “So we set the tone really early in the game and that helped us win.” What also helped was two 80-plus-yard runs to the house, a four-touchdown night from James, and South Albany turnovers — four recovered fumbles and two interceptions. Hermiston’s defense put pressure on senior quarterback Jake Costello and crew all night. In the Rebels fi rst drive, they went three-and-out. Their second ended with a forced fumble from Hinkle that Hermiston converted into its second touchdown to take a 14-0 lead. On the ensuing punt return, South Albany fumbled again and Hermiston recovered, again. Luckily for the Rebels (6-5), the Bulldogs couldn’t convert on third-and-long but on the next drive, South Albany continued to make mistake after mistake. Finally, with 28.6 seconds left until halftime, the Rebels were able to fi nd the end zone. After a 76-yard drive down the fi eld Costello found junior Eli Nafziger for three yards. Costello ended the night 24-of-34 for 331 yards, two touchdowns, and two inter- ceptions. His mistakes, or Herm- iston’s ability to make big plays when it counts, cost the Rebels late in the game. Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch issued a statement Monday saying while they are frustrated and disappointed with the Giants’ 1-8 record, they won’t evaluate the team and make any moves until the end of the season. McAdoo’s future has been a major topic the past two weeks in McAdoo the wake of a 34-point home loss to the Los Angeles Rams a little more than a week ago, then an embarrassing loss to a San Francisco 49ers team that was winless until Sunday. The owners said the 40-year-old McAdoo has their support. The Giants have not fi red a coach in the middle of the season since 1976. (AP) — Cam Newton threw for 254 yards and four touchdowns, rookie Christian McCaffrey scored touchdowns rushing and receiving, and the Carolina Panthers crushed the Miami Dolphins 45-21 on Monday night for their third straight victory. Jonathan Stewart ran for a season-high 110 yards and Newton Newton added 95, including a 69-yard jaunt on a read option, as the Panthers racked up 294 yards on the ground. Carolina set a franchise record with 548 yards from scrimmage. Devin Funchess caught fi ve passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers (7-3) remained a half-game behind the NFC South division leading Saints.
