YOUR EO NEWS Spirits fl y high as McKay Creek Estates celebrates Page 6C East Oregonian The month of October brought spirited celebrations to McKay Creek Estates, including a Halloween party and a birthday celebration dinner. Visitors of all ages, as well as many of the assisted living facility’s residents, dressed up for Halloween fun. Activities included guests trick-or-treating at resident apartments, children’s games and a costume contest. Judge Richard Courson manned the front door, greeting guests and handing out candy. The top costumes included Lilian Marie Gilchrist, who was an adorable baby Snow White; Brooklyn Williams as a cupcake in an outfi t she constructed herself after researching on YouTube; and the adult winner was Mollie Minthorn in an amazing Avatar costume that she created, said Karen Hoholik, McKay Creek Estates community relations director. Also, Kath Reger and Celia Lankford won the resident door decorating contest. The games, Hoholik said, were run by a fun crew of Pend- leton High School volunteers including Justice Craig, Angel Cordona, Rylee Gentner, Nicole Lee, Kalan McGlothan and Lauren Richards. Also, Barb Cleveland lent a hand with the games. During the celebration dinner, rounds of “Happy Birthday” fi lled the air for Bill Lankford, Bill and Nettie Jones, John Hardie and Wilma Kispaugh. In addition, Hardie was honored as the Resident of the Month. Also, the facility welcomed Ashelee Fairbank, the new health services director recently joined the McKay Creek team. Thirteen vintage, histor- ical or sentimental quilts were shared during the “Quilt Turning” program. A short story of each quilt’s past was read as the layered quilts were turned down on a bed. The popular activity will return during the 14th annual show, which is planned for Oct. 12-13, 2018. Special appreciation in helping with the show was given to the “set-up and take- down” crew that included Ron Morgan and athletes from Riverside and Ione high schools. All area quilters are invited to join the Boardman Quilt Group, which meets Mondays from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Boardman Senior Center. There is no fee to participate. Pendleton resident Robert Koch recently received the Milestone Chevron Award from Lions Club International, cele- brating 50 years of service as a Lions Club member. Koch originally joined the Lions Club in Grants Pass in 1967. After moving to Pendleton, Koch worked as a police offi cer, and later for the Oregon Liquor Control Commission for about 25 years, retiring in 1987. Daughter Chris Dietz said Koch is thrilled about the award. Founded in 1917, Lions Club International now has 46,000 clubs with more than 1.4 million members. She is currently in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Eastern Washington Univer- sity. The groom graduated from Liberty University in Lynchberg, Virginia, in 2011 and is a fellow class- mate with Rebecca in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at EWU. Following a honeymoon trip to Maui, Hawaii, the couple are living in Spokane and completing their fi nal year of physical therapy internships. They will both graduate in June 2018. The adult people’s choice winners were a trio of Boardman women, including Pam Dannon for “Bertie’s Choice,” a wool and fl annel appliqué quilt; and “Big Mouth Frogs,” a cotton appliqué creation by Glenda and Tammy Bozarth. Also, Esther Birt won in the 9-11 age group and Teagan Birt was tops in the 12-14 cate- gory. And Terri Dorran of Hermiston also walked away a winner, taking home the Holiday Jewels raffl e quilt. Featured quilter Lila Killingbeck of Boardman displayed a number of her creations.
