RECORDS Wednesday, November 8, 2017 PUBLIC SAFETY LOG 8:20 a.m. - A woman asked to speak to Hermiston police about the theft of her wallet from her car on Damsel Court. She said the car was unlocked and parked in her driveway. 9:27 a.m. - A caller at the Northwestern Motel & RV Park, 389 Main St., Heppner, reported the theft of loading ramps from his trailer. He said he borrowed the ramps from someone in town but could not remember who. 10:30 a.m. - A driver cut off a garbage truck at Hermiston Foods, 2250 S. Highway 395, Hermiston, and both drivers pulled over and exchanged words. The passenger vehicle’s driver called 911 and reported the truck driver pushed him. 1:57 p.m. - An Irrigon resident on Washington Street complained about a neighbor’s pit bull dog running loose. The caller said the dog has attacked their animals and their scared children in the past. 1:44 p.m. - A Hermiston resident on Southwest 15th Street reported someone entered her and her daughter’s vehicles and stole sunglasses. The crimes occurred between Friday night and Saturday morning, And in what is a common refrain, she said both vehicles where unlocked and in their driveway. 2:14 p.m. - The manager of Shari’s Cafe & Pies, 319 S.E. Nye Ave., Pendleton, reported the theft of a donation jar. 2:50 p.m. - A male on Joy Lane, Hermiston, asked for law enforcement to respond to a domestic disturbance. 3:05 p.m. - The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office investigated a report of a family with two school-age children camping at Willow Creek Reservoir, Heppner. 10:50 p.m. - Hermiston police responded to Southeast Fourth Street to investigate a prowler. Officer did not find a suspect. But police later made an arrest related to recent thefts from cars. For more, see page 3A. ARRESTS, CITATIONS •Hermiston police arrested Alona Marie Berecz, 23, of Hermiston, for second-degree trespass, felony possession of a federally controlled substance and possession of methamphetamine. Moon Dale Schmidt Milton-Freewater February 23, 1938 - November 2, 2017 Athena August 4, 1937 - October 9, 2017 Darrel L. Moon passed away November 2, 2017, at his home on Lincton Moun- tain surrounded by his loving family. The service will be Saturday, November 11, 2017, at 4 p.m. at First Christian Church in Milton-Freewater, Ore. Private inurn- ment will be at the Helix Cemetery. Darrel was born in his grand- parents’ home in Milton-Freewater on February 23, 1938. He went to Milton-Freewater schools, graduating from Mac-Hi in 1956 with his high school sweetheart. He married Dorothy M. Knopf on November 18, 1956. They were married for 50 years before her passing in 2007. Darrel had many jobs in high school, Rambo Welding (age 15), working Moon harvest, and running the movie theaters. He was an Eagle Scout. He served in the Army National Guard. Darrel and Dorothy moved to Helix, Ore., to raise their family when he purchased Helix Welding & Machine Shop. In addition to owning and operating Helix Welding from 1962 to 2006, Darrel drove a school bus and worked at the flour mill in Helix. He served on the Helix Park and Recreation Board, was a member of the chamber of commerce, a volunteer fireman, member of BPOE #288, and a member of Blue Mtn. Deutsche Tanzers German dance group. Call for more information Dale Schmidt was born at home in Burt, Iowa, on Aug. 4, 1937, to Alfred and Lena Schmidt and welcomed by his sisters Darlene and Wilma and his brother, Donald. Dale was No. 4 of nine children. Those who came after were sisters Anita, Shirley and Beverly, and brothers Dennis and Allen. They were raised on the Schmidt family farm in Corwith, Iowa. As a young man, Dale moved to Victorville, California, where he worked 28 years for Pfizer (cement plant). After retirement, he made his way to Milton-Free- water, Oregon. Darrel is widely known for his metal fabrication, truck beds, and Helix community projects including the park bridge and rodeo bleachers. Although he was often found at work, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. In retirement, Darrel enjoyed caring for family members, spending time with classmates and watching old west- erns. Darrel was a hard worker his entire life, kind to everyone and never met a stranger. If he talked to someone long enough, they would always find someone in common. He will be missed by two daughters, Melanie (Mike) Dabulskis and Melissa (Jon) Nitz; five grandchildren, Deidra, McKayla, Jeremy, Clarissa and Amber; a sister, Peggy (Ray) Bunch of Grass Valley, Calif.; two brothers, Ron (Pat) of Elko, Nev., and Tom (Eileen) of Pendleton, Ore.; his special friend and companion Bonnie Rencken of Milton-Freewater, Ore. (and her family); and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Ina Moon, his loving wife Dorothy and brother Keith (Pam).
