The exhibit, ‘Drawn Narratives’ opens Thursday at Betty Feves Memorial Gallery in Pendleton. Artist draws narratives from memory, imagination East Oregonian An international artist who gains inspiration from his experiences and observations of the two places he lives each year — the Midwestern United States and Japan — is featured in an upcoming exhibit at Betty Feves Memorial Gallery. Christopher Troutman’s exhibit, “Drawn Narra- tives,” features large-scale, multi-sectioned drawings created using charcoal and ink depicting human figures in contemporary urban settings. Working from a combination of memory and imagination, some of the pieces illustrate the similarities and differences between the two locations he resides. He divides his draw- ings into multiple sections and uses shifting vantage points. In addition, his style is influ- enced by comic books. The exhibit opens Thursday with a reception from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the gallery, which is located in Pioneer Hall at Blue Mountain Community College, 2411 N.W. Carden Ave., Pendleton. The family-friendly event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. While Troutman is unable to attend the opening recep- tion, BMCC writing students will read poems they have written, which were inspired by the artist’s drawings. Troutman received a Master of Fine Arts degree in drawing and painting from California State University Long Beach and a bachelor’s degree in drawing and painting from Bradley University in Illinois. The Betty Feves Memorial Gallery is a nonprofit exhibit space that connects emerging and established artists with students, staff and the general public. The current exhibit runs through Thursday, Dec. 7. The gallery is open Monday through Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or by appointment by calling 541-278-5952. Teams from the Shosho- ne-Bannock Nation in Idaho and the Crow and Blackfeet Nations, both of Montana, are featured in a film as they prepare and compete in the Indian relay season. Each of the teams have their eye on the prize — winning the national championships. The public is invited to screen the docu- mentary, “Indian Relay,” Wednesday at 6 p.m. in ST-200 at Blue Mountain Community College’s Science and Technology building, 2411 N.W. Carden Ave., Pendleton. The free event is part of Native American Heritage month events at BMCC. The film, which premiered in November 2013 on PBS, received best cultural documentary and best photography from the Northwest Regional Emmy Awards. Award-winning film- maker Charles Dye was committed to providing a positive and exciting view of the American Indian tradition of relay racing. Described as an exhil- arating mix of high-speed Contributed photo “Indian Relay,” a PBS documentary about Indian relay racing, will be screened Wednesday at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton. The free event is part of the college’s Native American Heritage month activities. daring and exquisite horse- manship, Indian relay racing features up to eight athletes riding bareback around a track at full gallop. Barely slowing down after a lap, the riders leap from their horse to another and then again for a third lap. The riders race to the finish line, often at speeds topping 40 m.p.h. In addition, handlers corral their team’s horses, which can result in 32 people and 24 horses in the middle of the track creating a chaotic melee. BRIEFLY Bird Club flocks to fundraiser Commander to discuss women in combat PENDLETON — Commander of the Army National Guard in Pendleton will discuss women in combat during the upcoming Round-Up Republican Women’s meeting. Breanna Westman-Evans has experience as a battle captain in an Iraq combat zone. The public is invited to hear her speak Thursday at 11:45 a.m. at the Red Lion, 304 S.E. Nye Ave., Pendleton. The no-host meal costs $11 for members and $13 for non-members. In addition, the event will include a presentation and display of uniforms from the Pendleton Air Museum. PENDLETON — The Pendleton Bird Club will host a potluck social and fundraiser. The public is invited to the event, which is Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church, 215 N.
