Jeffers Jinni Lee Ann Burns 9:23 a.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office took a report for a burglary at Steve’s Assured Security Storage, 80886 N. Highway 395, Hermiston. 12:12 p.m. - A person asked to speak to a Hermiston officer about being blackmailed via Facebook. 1:34 p.m. - A man from Minnesota called the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office and asked about sex offender registration in Oregon. 2:46 p.m. - The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office received a request to check on the welfare of an elderly Boardman resident who may be the victim of theft and abuse. 3:29 p.m. - Two drivers suffered minor injuries in a crash on Interstate 84, Pendleton. Oregon State Police reported Paul F. Brauer, 84, of Boring, was heading east in a Volkswagen Beetle when he lost control near milepost 210, crossed the median and collided with a westbound Ford Explorer. Ambulances took Brauer and the Ford’s driver, Marcus A. Nelson, 33, of Hermiston, to St. Anthony Hospital, Pendleton. The hospital treated and released Nelson, according to state police, but kept Brauer overnight for observations. He is the father of Umatilla County Circuit Judge Christopher Brauer. The Pendleton Fire Department, Oregon State Police, and other agencies responded to the crash, which slowed traffic along the westbound lanes for around an hour. 5:47 p.m. - Pilot Rock police issued a warning to a dog owner for the pet biting someone. 6:48 p.m. - A Umatilla caller on Eighth Street reported a break-in and theft of tools and materials. 7:12 p.m. - Hermiston police received a report that a 6-year-old girl went missing while trick-or-treating. She was dressed as the superhero villain The Joker but with two ponytails. She was found back at her vehicle within one minute of the report. 9:20 p.m. - Pendleton police responded to a report of a fight outside Bi-Mart, 901 S.W. Emigrant Ave. 9:32 p.m. - Pendleton police checked out a possible bomb threat at Brownfield Park, 12 S. Main St. Officers found a Halloween ornament was knocked over and not a bomb. Pilot Rock Weston June 24, 1930-Oct. 13, 2017 Feb 9, 1978-Oct. 31, 2017 Marion Elizabeth Jeffers, 87, was born June 24, 1930, the only child of Fred and Ada Vaughn of Petaluma, California. She attended Petaluma High School, graduating in 1948. She attended Western Baptist Bible College in Oakland, California in 1949 where she met Lyle Jeffers. While at Western, Marion was involved with a trio that sang for radio programs on at least one Christian radio station in the bay area and was also involved in a sextet singing group. Jeffers Also as a student at the college, she met Lyle Jeffers. They were married Oct. 7, 1950. They had four daughters, Sandra, Cheryl, Ronna and Leeann. Cheryl died at the age of 18 months from a heart defect and Ronna died in 1980. Marion and Lyle moved quite often prior to about 1980, living in California, Iowa, South Dakota, Nevada and Oregon. Lyle served primarily as a cowboy preacher. Marion herself worked in housekeeping in a hospital in Ames, Iowa. Later worked as a hospital unit secretary in John Day, Oregon in 1974. She also served as a hospital unit secretary when she and Lyle lived in Lodi, ARRESTS, CITATIONS •Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office arrested Nathan Daniel Spencer, 19, of Athena, for felony strangulation, and misde- meanors of menacing and harassment •Hermiston police arrested Rachel Elizabeth Collyer, 33, of Hermiston, for possession of methamphetamine and a post- prison supervision sanction. In 1994, Marion and Lyle became charter members of the Oregon Gospel Music Association, and as The Jeffers, performed in several churches in the area. Also in the group were Lyle’s brother, Elmer and sister Betty, nephew Chris Nielsen and son-in-law Lanny. After Lyle Jeffers died in 2005, she later married her long- time brother-in-law, Elmer Jeffers, Oct. 21, 2006. They first lived in North Bend, Oregon, then moved to Pilot Rock, Oregon, in 2010. She passed away in Pendleton Oct. 13, 2017, and was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Lyle, two daughters, and is survived by her second husband, Elmer, one other brother-in-law, two sisters- in-law, two daughters, one son-in-law, three grandsons and 12 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017, at the Pilot Rock Baptist Church with a reception to follow. BRIEFLY COMING EVENTS Show features all things leather The Arc Umatilla County serves spuds PENDLETON — Leather crafting, classes, vendors, a saddle contest, door prizes, drawings and more are featured during the Pendleton Leather Show. The event is Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pendleton Convention Center, 1601 Westgate. Admission to the show is free, but there are some fees for classes. Lunch and concessions will be available for purchase. In addition, Pendleton Center for the Arts will be on hand Saturday, offering free leather craft classes. There is one for kids 12 and under and their families from 9:30-10:15 a.m. and Hip & Handmade for adults from 11 a.m. to noon. HERMISTON — A potato bar meal will help raise money for The Arc Umatilla County. The event is Sunday from 5-6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for ages 3-10. A nonprofit organization, The Arc advocates for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities throughout Umatilla County. Fundraiser benefits Echo, Stanfield FFA STANFIELD — A dinner and auction will help raise money for the Echo and Stanfield FFA chapters. Oldies Night spins tunes from 1982 MILTON-FREEWATER — By 1982, disco was fading in popularity, but medleys were rising. However, the biggest hit single in 1982 was “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, which remained at the top of the charts for seven weeks. Also, Stevie Wonder was the most popular artist on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “That Girl” and four other hits, including “Ebony and Ivory,” a duet with Paul McCartney which peaked at No. 1. And, Huey Lewis and the News had its first chart single that year, as did Billy Idol and Laura Branigan. In all, 424 records hit the pop chart, some lasting just one week, while others hung around for months.
