COMMUNITY East Oregonian Page 6A Tuesday, October 31, 2017 MISSION BRIEFLY Tamástslikt exhibit examines WWII Japanese-American confinement site East Oregonian A new exhibit at Tamástslikt Cultural Institute highlights the complexities of the largest Japanese-American confinement sites during World War II. “Art of Survival — Enduring the Turmoil of Tule Lake” opens Friday in the museum, located near Wildhorse Resort & Casino in Mission. The opening day event is free to the public. The Tule Lake location was the largest of the 10 confinement sites. In addition, anyone deemed a troublemaker by the federal government was relocated there. It became the only officially designated segregation center. Ruled under martial law, it was the most controversial of all the camps. Many of the people who were brought in under segregation were people who knew their rights and were willing to stand up to the injustice. However, they were accused of being disloyal. She will speak Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Vert Clubroom, 345 S.W. Fourth St., Pendleton. The public is welcome to attend the event. AAUW (American Association of University Women) works to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. The Pendleton affiliate is the closest group in the region. In addition, the AAUW is taking orders for its annual grapefruit fundraiser. Also, oral histories provide varying views on some of the complex issues of Tule Lake in the voices of those held captive. The exhibition also explores the power of propaganda, up-to- date terminology relating to the confinement experience, the history behind the incarceration and what happened when the camp closed. The exhibit is the result of a cooperative effort with the Tule Lake Unit of WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “Art of Survival” remains on display through Jan. 6, 2018. Tamástslikt Cultural Institute is open Monday through Satur- days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Regular museum admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $6 for youths 6-17 and free for ages 5 and under. Fundraising event benefits Ione 2-year-old with leukemia IONE — A tri-tip dinner, games, face painting and a silent auction are featured during a fundraiser for the Matt and Adrienne Fairbank family of Ione. The couple’s 2-year-old son, Anson, was recently diagnosed with leukemia. The Sunday Funday is Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Ione American Legion Hall, 325 W. Second St. The cost is $20 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and under. All money raised form the event will go toward helping the Fairbank family with expenses related to Anson’s illness and treatment. The open enrollment period runs through Dec. 15 at HealthCare.gov. People can change plans or buy a plan for coverage and avoid a potential penalty on their 2018 taxes. “In Oregon, we want people to get health insurance,” said Gov. Kate Brown. “Already, 95 percent of Oregonians are covered and 100 percent of children have access.
