SPORTS Friday, October 27, 2017 Prep Football East Oregonian Page 3B Pro Football Burns, Irrigon meet with 3A Texans’ Watson faces big test at-large qualifier on the line Sunday at red-hot Seahawks East Oregonian Nine weeks have came and went, and the final regular season football games will be played on Friday. Here’s a look at the Class 1A, 2A and 3A match ups: BURNS (4-4, 2-2) AT IRRIGON (4-3, 2-2), 7 P.M. — Irrigon was poised for a run at one of the two automatic berths in the Eastern Oregon League (EOL), but after two back- to-back losses the Knights will need to defend their turf if they want a chance at the at-large bid. Irrigon was able to bounce back from last week with a 40-6 win over Umatilla on the road, and will host the Burns Hilanders on Friday. Burns has stayed afloat in the EOL, trading big wins with close losses since the start of league play. The Hilanders efforts moved them to No. 14 in the OSAA rankings — just two places behind Irrigon. A win for Burns, and some mishaps with other high ranking teams, could put the Hilan- ders in contention for the final playoff spot. NYSSA (6-0, 4-0) AT UMATILLA (4-4, 1-3), 7 P.M. — The Nyssa Bulldogs remain undefeated after their largest victory of the season last week, a 53-6 win at Riverside, and will travel to face Umatilla, which has struggled as of late. The Vikings have not won a league game since their 44-16 victory over Riverside on Oct. 6. They were shut out by Vale (46-0) and struggled to get anything going when Irrigon payed them a visit last week, losing 40-6. The Bulldogs postseason fate has already been sealed, now they are working toward their first undefeated regular season since 2013. RIVERSIDE (2-5, 0-4) AT VALE (5-3, 3-1), 7 P.M. — Vale enter the contest with three consecutive wins, two of which were by more than 40 points, while River- side has lost five straight. It’s unlikely the last-place Pirates will be able to pick up their first league win against a dominant Viking squad. Vale earned the final automatic playoff berth in the EOL, and will hope to avenge last year’s Round 1 loss. WESTON-MCEWEN (1-5, 0-2) AT CULVER (0-8, 0-2), 7 P.M. — Nothing has been going the Culver Bulldogs way this season, losing every game by three touchdowns or more. They will close out their season hosting another struggling Columbia Basin Conference (CBC) team, the Weston- McEwen TigerScots. Both teams will be playing for a league win Friday. CORBETT (2-5) AT HEPPNER (4-3) — This non-league match up will be a nice change of pace for the Heppner Mustangs, as they are coming of a 44-15 victory over Stanfield where they clinched the Class 2A Columbia Basin Conference title. The Corbett Cardinals will make the three hour trip east after two consecutive losses where they allowed 35 points in each defeat. MONROE (6-1) AT STANFIELD (2-4) — Stan- field can rest easy knowing its season will continue as the Tigers clinched the second of two playoff spots in the CBC, but will have no easy task when they host Monroe. The Dragons are first in their league, Mountain View Conference, and are ranked No. 3 in Class 2A. They have won their past five games by holding teams to just two TDs or less. ARLINGTON (5-3) AT PILOT ROCK (2-5) — The Arlington Honkers were dominate in the beginning of their season, going on a five- game winning streak where they scored 60 or more points in all but one game, where they still managed to blowout their opponents 57-0. But recently, they have had a tough go, and dropped games to Dufur (58-14) and Sherman (46-8) the past two weeks. When the Pilot Rock Rockets host the Honkers on Friday, they will also be reeling from two tough losses. HARPER CHARTER (3-3, 2-2) AT ECHO (6-2, 4-1) — In this league playoff game, the Echo Cougars enter with confidence after three consecutive wins. Meanwhile, the Harper Charter Hornets inched up to sixth place in league standings after a 74-3 win over Huntington. The Cougars are hoping for a win to return to the state championship playoffs for the second consecutive season — a feat they haven’t been able to accomplish since the 2010-11 seasons. And for as much respect as the Seahawks have for what Watson is accom- plishing as a rookie, they’re ready to introduce him to one of the league’s premier defenses. “He’s poised. It’s like (Carson) Wentz was last year when we played him. He doesn’t always make the greatest decisions because he’s a rookie. He’s going to make mistakes. People make mistakes,” Seattle corner- back Richard Sherman said. “But he’s poised. He doesn’t get rattled easily. The moment is not too big for him.” Watson is on pace for one of the best rookie seasons ever by a quarterback, espe- cially considering he didn’t start the opener. Watson’s 15 TD passes are the most by a rookie in his team’s first six games of a season. Twelve of those have come in the past three games where he’s posted a 118.3 passer rating and tossed just two interceptions. He’s the first rookie in league history with three straight games of three or more TD passes. It’s special what Watson has accomplished. Doing it against a caliber of opponent such as Seattle would be a significant next step. “It doesn’t take long to see how versatile he is, the dynamic player that he is,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. “... There’s nothing he can’t do. He’s doing it all and he’s making marvelous throws and these tights window throws, all across the board from the top down. He can do it all so they’ve got to be just thrilled they have him.” Seattle has a pretty good quarterback of its own, one with many of the same attributes as Watson. It’s no wonder that Russell Wilson is regularly included in the clips Houston coach Bill O’Brien shows his quarter- backs each week.
