The Pirates certainly made their pres- ence known as both teams shut Boys Soccer out the Knights by a combined 15 goals. Riverside Irrigon was fielding a first- year girl’s varsity program against the experienced Irrigon Pirates. At first the competition was evenly matched. The Girls Soccer Knights inexpe- rience definitely showed but it took a while for Riverside the Pirates to find their groove in very windy conditions. S m a l l Irrigon mistakes on both sides, like inaccurate short passes or missed opportunities to down the ball, caused possession to change frequently. But once Riverside settled down, the Pirates began to dominate. They scored four goals in 20 minutes, and entered the half up by a comfortable margin. “I liked the girl’s pressure,” head coach Carlos Velasco said. “We worked on that, on pres- suring the ball.” The Pirates continued to put the pressure on in the second half, holding the Knights scoreless with only three shots on goal. Riverside had to grind out its victory down four players, which left the team without any subs. “At the end they kind of got tired,” Velasco added. The athleticism and endurance the girls showed against Irrigon is going to be something they will need to tap into as they near the end of the regular season. The Pirates hold the top spot in Special District 2. While the Knights won’t continue into the postseason, head coach Joe Cobb celebrates the small victories, which he sees in the improvements the girls make week to week. “I thought the kids — we have progressively got better each game,” Cobb said. “I tell them the goal every game is to get better, and I like to try to get the ball in the goal. But I didn’t feel we went out there and embarrassed ourselves. I thought we went out there and played our kind of game.” Unlike the girls, the boy’s match up was uneven. They took the field after the girl’s game and with Irrigon entering the game winless and Riverside undefeated it was only a matter of time before the Pirates began their reign. They earned their eighth consecutive victory after defeating the Knights 11-0. The Pirates (8-0 overall, 3-0 Special District 4) scored four goals in the first half, one was off a free kick by sophomore Ulyces Lopez with just six minutes to go until the half. Riverside’s comfortable lead increased dramatically in the opening minutes of the second half. The Pirates scored three goals in the first six minutes against the Knights (0-9, 0-3), who were playing without any subs. The stacked field took laps around Carmi- chael Middle School as their regular season winds down. Hermiston was coming off of a not-so-hot finish in Portland a week ago, and head coach Troy Blackburn was impressed with how well they preformed this time out. “I was excited, especially after last week,” he said. “This week they bounced back. This year we did very well which will give us momentum going into districts.” Hermiston finished within the top 10 in both the girls and boys 3-mile Division II race. The girls placed second with 89 points while the boys finished in seventh place with 183 points. The boys could have easily placed in third or fourth if it weren’t missing a runner but there are still many things to celebrate. Seniors Melany Solorio and Isaac Sanchez were once again the No. 1 runners for each team. Both finished third in their respective races. Solorio clocked 19:21.51 and Sanchez ran sub-16 to finish 15:55.60. In fact, he shaved of 35 seconds from his course record. Two other Bulldogs from the girls team finished in the top 20. Freshman Amanda Nygard rounded out the top five in 19:24.63 and sophomore Shelia Solorio came in 17th place (20:10.30). For the boy’s, Hermiston’s next finisher behind Sanchez was fellow senior Emanuel Ibarra. Ibarra ran 16:52.96 for 23rd place, and junior Angel Benites followed in 29th place (16:59.21) Pendleton’s girls team earned a 12th place finish with 267 points and the boys team finished 17th with 560. Rylee Harris carried the Buckaroos with a 33rd place finish, running in 20:59.60, while Jordyn Murphy (21:59.49) and Katie Beach (22:01.09) were 61st and 62nd respectively. On boys side, freshman Jimmy Jones was the top finisher in 111th with a time of 18:45.37, while junior Michael Brooks was 115th (18:57.29) and Curtis Simons was 119th (19:03.39). VOLLEYBALL MORO — The Weston-McEwen TigerScots and Heppner Mustangs trav- eled to Sherman County on Saturday for some quality non-league games against St. Paul and Kennedy, but the two teams traveled home with just one win between the two. The TigerScots competed well on the day, dropping their first match to St. Paul 3-2 (25-22, 15-25, 18-25, 25-14, 15-10), but then rallied to take down Kennedy 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 15-25, 25-19, 15-12). It was a rough day for the Mustangs, as they fell to St. Paul 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-16) and Kennedy 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 17-25, 18-25). For Weston-McEwen (14-10), Bryce Thul had a good day and recorded 28 digs, 51 assists, 14 kills and seven aces in the two matches, while Ellie Scheibner finished with 13 digs, 21 assists and three aces. Up front, Alyssa Finifrock led the team with 28 kills and 11 blocks, while Hailey Weaver and Tyree Burke combined for 33 kills and 16 blocks. On defense, Chelsea Quaempts tallied a team-best 51 digs with Jesse Manning following with 16 digs and Keree Graves with 14. “We did a great job today,” Weston- McEwen coach Shawn White said. “Our goal was to come in with more aggression and execute better and we did that all day.” For Heppner (15-7), Morgan Correa recorded 12 kills and three blocks on the day and Sydney Wilson led the team with 42 digs. Also in the scorebook, Madison Combe notched six kills while sophomore Nicole Propheter had four of her own, Jacee Currin served five aces, and racked up 11 assists and Sophie Grant ended the night with five kills and nine assists. “We struggled getting started this morning and just couldn’t recover,” head coach Mindy Wilson said. “St. Paul’s a good team and just out played us ... It was a tough day for us, but a good day of volleyball. It showed us where we need to be for the next level.
