My husband is very conservative and Weddings are supposed to be about love, opinionated about politics. Our daughter has become much more politically liberal over the last couple of years. Jason thinks it is disrespectful of her to not want to listen to him try to influence her to think like he does (he has tried before). I have told Jason she needs to work out her own political beliefs and, as she matures and sees how the business world works, she’ll probably become more moderate. Jason is now insisting that we set a time when “the three of us can talk,” which means he will lecture her about where she is wrong. What can I do as a mother and wife to mediate this meeting? I think both of them are pretty dug in. — Love Them Both In Arkansas Dear Love: I see no way that what your husband has in mind will be either pleasant or productive. However, because he is her father, Laurie owes him the respect of hearing him out. When the conversation becomes heated — as it very well may — suggest a timeout until they both cool down. Or leave the room if it becomes too stressful for you. ODDS & ENDS Burglar empties restaurant cash register, cooks meal, leaves Security video showed the same man was there the night before but didn’t cook. Police said Wednesday he hasn’t been arrested, but they have recovered one of his sandals that fell off during the chase. HICKSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — A burglar made a clean getaway from a Long Island restaurant after emptying the cash register, cooking a meal and washing the dishes. Will Colon tells Newsday he found bent burglar bars when he arrived Tuesday at Nelly’s Taqueria in Hicksville, New York. Security video showed the intruder put on food-service gloves and started heating up a pot before hammering the register open. He pocketed the money and put a dollar in the tip jar. Then, Colon says, the man started “cooking up a storm” in the dark — beans, chicken, shrimp. Colon says “the dude had some skills.” After eating, he covered and refrigerated the food and wiped down surfaces. Would-be thief in Rio chased out of gym by jiu-jitsu students New Mexico college: Pay tickets with peanut butter RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A would-be thief in a Rio de Janeiro suburb apparently chose the wrong gym to rob. Surveillance camera footage shared widely on social media shows the man entering the gym and jumping a turnstile after arguing with the receptionist. Several seconds later, the man is seen jumping back over the turnstile and fleeing outside. He is chased by several jiu-jitsu students dressed in uniforms. Jiu-jitsu teacher Edgar Neto told The Associated Press that the incident happened Monday night and he reported it to police. The man managed to escape. 100 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Oct. 7-8, 1917 Though he has been mourned as dead since last April, Harold Dunn, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Dunn of this city, is still alive and wondering why his parents have not been writing to him. A postal card, dated at Portland, Maine, Oct. 1, was received by Mr. and Mrs. Dunn today. Last April Mr. and Mrs. Dunn received word that their son had been killed beneath the wheels of a train at Cortland, Ohio, and together with the fact that letters and papers found near the mangled body undoubtedly belonged to him, convinced the Dunns that it was their boy who had been killed. Mrs. Dunn went back and buried the remains. Recently Mr. Dunn has received several cards from his son but none of them dated until the one reaching him today. Therefore, he did not tell his wife of his suspicions that his son was still alive. The positive confirmation contained in the card today has given Mr. and Mrs. Dunn cause for great rejoicing. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Oct. 7-8, 1967 The son of a Pendleton school librarian has been killed in Vietnam. He was Capt. James Neisses, son of Grace Neisses, librarian for six years at Helen McCune Junior High School. Capt. Neisses, a member of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, had been in Vietnam since Jan. 23. He was to have started a rest and recuperation leave today in Honolulu, Hawaii. His wife, LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico State University is allowing motorists to take a bite out of certain parking tickets by paying with peanut butter. The Las Cruces Sun-News reports the school recently announced motorists who have received a “no current permit” parking citation can pay it with at least 80 ounces of peanut butter from Oct. 23 to 27. All peanut butter donations will be sent to the Aggie Cupboard. The offer is limited to the first 100 customers. Officials say appealing the citation forfeits the right to pay with peanut butter. DAYS GONE BY who resides at Pacific Grove, Calif., had planned to meet him in Honolulu. The couple has one child, a daughter, 2. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Oct. 7-8, 1992 Dorothy Moon quietly walked away from the Helix Post Office on Friday afternoon. She turned off the lights, locked the door and won’t come back. Moon retired after 27 1/2 years with the U.S. Postal Service in the small town northeast of Pendleton. Lenore Narkaus hired her as a clerk, and Moon became postmaster when Narkaus retired 20 years ago. On her last day of work, Moon said she didn’t want a party or she’d become too emotional. But flowers and gifts are evident around the small office. She won’t move away. THIS DAY IN HISTORY Today is the 280th day of 2017. There are 85 days left in the year. Thought for Today: “An egotist is a person of low taste — more interested in himself than in me.” — Ambrose Bierce, American author-jour- nalist (1842-1914?). OUT OF THE VAULT Passers-by confounded by eerie car noises N ext time you take the farm rig into town, be sure you check it out underneath. You may have an unsuspecting passenger. A woman living on a farm just outside Pendleton (who was unnamed in the Oct. 19, 1938 East Oregonian article) ran into town for supplies and parked her car on Main Street. As she got out of the vehicle, she and startled passers-by immediately noticed some eerie sounds coming from the car. “What is it?” someone asked. “A new kind of horn on your car?” The woman, equally puzzled, listened carefully. If she were at home, the woman said, she would guess the sound was a chicken in distress. Someone thought to look under the car, and after a thorough search found a ruffled hen clinging to a fender support, probably with a very unusual feeling in its crop. The woman placed the hen in the back seat, where it settled in comfortably and waited patiently for a ride home while her owner finished her errands. — Renee Struthers writes the weekly Out of the Vault column.
