COMMUNITY East Oregonian Page 6A Thursday, September 7, 2017 PENDLETON BRIEFLY Fine craft gallery features regional artists East Oregonian Walla Walla jewelry artist Catherine Hysell is one of three regional talents being featured in September at Pendleton Center for the Arts. The art center’s Pendleton Foundation Trust Foundation Fine Craft Gallery will highlight Hysell’s crocheted rope necklaces, which incorporate large numbers of Swarovski crystals and vintage Czech glass beads. They are then embellished with pendants or semi-precious stones such as carnelian, jasper and turquoise. Other one-of-a-kind works and earrings also will be included. Hysell studied art at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota, attended classes at the University of California, San Diego, and the San Diego Art Institute. She also attended workshops by Karen Ovington and Lynne Merchant. Because the rope necklaces can be worn in a wide range of styles, Hysell loves seeing the way they take on a new life with each buyer. “I am particularly interested in the visual texture and serpentine feel of crocheted ropes,” she said. “I love how tactile they are and how they warm up to your body temperature as you wear them. It’s exciting to see my completed work take on a totally new look in someone else’s hands.” Admission to Pendleton Center for the Arts is always free, and the Pendleton Foundation Trust Fine Craft Gallery features wearable and functional art by more than 100 regional artists. The art center is open Tuesday through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. It’s located at 214 N. Main St. The website is www.pendletonarts.org. Crow’s Shadow rounds up Main Street exhibit East Oregonian A special Pendleton Main Street gallery will feature a variety of artwork from the permanent collection at Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts. Round-Up City visitors can view the work of promi- nent regional, contemporary American Indian artists such as James Lavadour, Wendy Red Star and Rick Bartow. In addition, the gallery will feature prints from non-native artists who have participated in the Crow’s Shadow Artist-in-Resi- dency program, including Samantha Wall and Pat Boas. The exhibit also includes prints by students from Nixyaawii Community School. The pieces were produced during a yearlong printmaking class taught at Crow’s Shadow by Frank Janzen, master printer. The Crow’s Shadow Round-Up Gallery will be open Thursday, Sept. 14 through Saturday, Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4-8 p.m. at 256 S. Main St., Pendleton. There is no admission charge. In addition, several local food and beverage purveyors will offer tastes of their top selling or exclusive small batch products. The Main Street presence provides Crow’s Shadow with exposure while thou- sands visit the area. This is the second year in a row that the art institute will take up residence in the pop-up location during the busy Round-Up week. The special gallery show is made possible by support from the Jordan Schnitzer Family Founda- tion and Harsch Investment Properties, both major arts and Round-Up supporters, said Nika Blasser, Crow’s Shadow marketing director. The special event coin- cides with the institute’s 25th anniversary. Crow’s Shadow Institute of Arts was founded in 1992 by James Lavadour, who envisioned the arts as contributing to social and economic development. Hall of fame honors inductees PENDLETON — A limited number of tickets are still available for the Round-Up and Happy Canyon Hall of Fame banquet, which will honor this year’s inductees. The event is Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at the Pendleton Convention Center, 1601 Westgate. Tickets are $40 in advance or $45 at the door, if available. Honorees include, in the contract personnel category, Loyd Ketchum and Joe Baumgartner; Round-Up contestant category, Danny Torricellas; Happy Canyon volunteer, Matt Duchek; and Ruth Fletcher from the early years category. Founded in 1969, the museum preserves the history of Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon. Exhibits include everything from a full-sized teepee, wagons and clothing to delicate beadwork, saddles and trophies. In 2011, it received an honorable mention for Top Western Museums in the True West Magazine. The hall of fame’s regular hours are Monday through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During Round-Up, extended hours Sept. 15-16 are until 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and free for kids 12-and-under. Open Air Market offers local goods ECHO — As the season starts to wind down, there is still an upcoming Open Air Market in Echo.
