Continued from 1B claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 31 and hit his second home run since joining the Astros to snap a 1-all tie. Seattle starter Ariel Miranda threw 112 pitches over six hitless innings that included six walks — three of which led to Houston’s first run in the third on Alex Bregman’s sacrifice fly. James Pazos (4-5) relieved in the seventh and walked Brian McCann with one out. Pazos was replaced by Emilio Pagan, who left a 3-2 pitch in the middle of the plate and Maybin hit his eighth homer of the season. Verlander (11-8) allowed six hits and struck out seven. The 2011 AL MVP whiffed Staff photo by E.J. Harris give the Buckaroos some fits in the second and third. In the second set, Pendleton worked into a 17-12 lead before Baker went on a 6-0 run to take its first lead since the early stages of the set. But Pendleton was able to keep its composure and grind out the win. Finally in the third set, Pendleton never trailed however could not get more than a two or three-point cushion for the bulk of the set. The Buckaroos eventu- ally built up a 24-18 lead but again the Bulldogs roared back to get within two points before Lapp called a timeout to settle the team. Lapp continuously gave her team a bit of a longer leash then normal when it came to using her timeouts on Tuesday, something that she admitted was planned. “Especially right now, I want them to get in there and grit down, figure things Mitch Haniger on his final pitch of the night, a 99 mph fastball. Verlander’s only costly out and gain confidence in themselves to work through the mental game,” Lapp said. “Because it’s only going to get tougher as the season goes. So if they can work through the mental game now early on, it’ll be better for them in the long run.” Kalan McGlothan led Pendleton with eight kills while Ellen Nirschl and Maureen Davies each tallied three. Davies also had a team-high seven blocks, using her 6-foot-2 frame to give the Bulldogs front line issues all match long. Other leaders included Lauren Richards with 19 assists and Kirah McGlothan was credited with six digs. Continued from 1B knew that we had to get a result down here. Credit to Bobby, he came in and scored a nice goal. As a team we worked really hard the whole game. Obviously we would have loved three points but a point is big for us down here.” The U.S. remained third in the North and Central American and Caribbean region with nine points, ahead of Honduras on goal difference with two qual- ifiers remaining. Panama had seven points and was in position to overtake the Americans later Tuesday when it hosted last-place Trinidad and Tobago. The top three nations in the six-team group qualify for next year’s tournament in Russia, and the fourth-place country meets Australia or Syria in a playoff for another berth. The U.S. hosts Panama on Oct. 6 at Orlando, Florida, and finishes four days later at Trinidad, so Arena’s team has control of its own fate. “I’m proud of the way our team battled. Those were really difficult condi- tions. That was a huge point,” Arena said. “With two games remaining in qualifying, we have every- thing to play for.” Still, the Americans may need wins in both games. They will head into their finale uncertain of qualifying for the first time since 1989, when Paul Caligiuri’s goal gave them a 1-0 win at Trinidad and their first World Cup berth since 1950. Failing to qualify for the 32-nation field in Russia would be an embarrassing failure for the U.S. Soccer Federation after seven straight World Cup appear- ances helped lift the sport from obscurity in the U.S. The Americans reached the quarterfinals in 2002 under Arena, who was SCOREBOARD Boston 3, Toronto 2, 19 innings Detroit 13, Kansas City 2 Tampa Bay 2, Minnesota 1 Cleveland 9, Chicago White Sox 4 L.A. The team’s fortunes started to revive with a 6-0 rout of Honduras in San Jose, California, in March and a tie at Panama four days later. A home win over Trinidad and a draw at Mexico in June left the Americans third, and they took a 14-game unbeaten streak under Arena into Friday’s game against Costa Rica at Harrison, New Jersey, where they lost 2-0 and left little further margin for error. It was 93 degrees with high humidity and a harsh sun at kickoff, and though the field was covered with shade during the second half there was still a water break in the 70th minute. The grass was long and barbed wire separated fans from the running track that surrounds the field. While there are luxury suites, the stadium does not have a scoreboard. Arena made seven changes to his starting lineup, saying Europe- based players were not fully fit just weeks into their club seasons and were unpre- pared for the heat. Only right back Graham Zusi and midfielders Pulisic, Michael Bradley and Darlington Nagbe remained from Friday’s lineup. Gonzalez and Matt Besler replaced Geoff Cameron and Tim Ream in central defense, and 35-year-old DaMarcus Beasley, a veteran of four World Cups was at left back in place of Jorge Villafana. Kellyn Acosta replaced Fabian Johnson in a more defensive midfield align- ment, while Morris started up front with Clint Dempsey in place of Wood and Jozy Altidore, who served a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation. Against South Wasco, Heppner (6-3) prevailed with set scores of 17-25, 25-16, 18-25, 25-18 and 25-12. Morgan Correa led the Mustangs in the match with eight kills and the team served 90 percent, which was a big factor in the win. “We struggled getting things going,” Heppner coach Mindy Wilson said. “Things were just not coming together, but they pulled together as a team and got it done.” Then against Irrigon (3-1), Heppner won 25-19, 25-19 and 25-21.
