Prep Roundup Boys Soccer The brand-new lights at the Pend- leton athletic fi eld were turned on for an prep game for the fi rst time on Thursday night, as the Buckaroos boys soccer team hosted Milwaukie. “It was amazing to be out there,” said Pendleton junior goalkeeper Andrew Wolotira of the fi eld. “It’s awesome that we fi nally have a fi eld for our own and we don’t have to go play at a different school.” Unfortunately the Buckaroos couldn’t put together a memorable fi rst performance at their new home. The team put together a good fi rst half, but lost some composure in the second half and watched its offense dry up to drop the game 4-0 to the Mustangs. Milwaukie Pendleton 4 0 “Our composure wasn’t great tonight,” Pendleton coach Jeremy Talbot said. “We want to possess the ball and obviously when there’s a little adversity its a test of character to do the new stuff and commit to it or if we’re going to divert to the things that don’t work. And unfortunately we got back into the habit of kicking over the top and bombing the ball instead of trusting teammates and trying to work the ball.” See BUCKAROOS/2B Prep Football Football season is here Week 1 games kicks off today East Oregonian Forty weeks ago, the 2016 prep football season came to an end in the state of Oregon with state championship games for all classifi cations. And now, seemingly in the blink of an eye, the 2017 season is upon us. Tonight, 189 prep football teams in Oregon will kick off their respective seasons with each with one goal in mind — to reach the state championship. We gave you looks at three of those in Thursday’s East Oregonian with Hermiston going to Union (WA) and Pendleton hosting La Grande. Here are quick looks at the other seven schools in Umatilla and Morrow Counties that will be in action tonight; MAC-HI at DAYTON-WAITSBURG (WA), 7 p.m. — For each of the last three seasons the Mac-Hi Pioneers have opened the football season against a Waitsburg team that has had many forms — a co-op with Prescott and then in 2016 as a standalone team. Mac-Hi won that 2016 battle 14-7 and this year Waits- burg is co-oped with Dayton High School. The Pioneers fi nished the 2016 season 2-6 overall, but return 10 starters including QB Drew Birdwell and lineman Spencer Wells as they hope to break out of the basement in the GOL this season. UMATILLA at UNION, 7 p.m. — Umatilla and Union open the season against each other for the fourth consecutive See FOOTBALL/2B NFL TigerScots Seahawks beat Raiders in preseason fi nale wins with last- beat Bobcats Seattle minute touchdown Weston-McEwen volleyball stays on a roll to start season East Oregonian ATHENA — A common phrase that coaches often say in sports is ‘Defense wins championships.’ Weston-McEwen Volleyball volleyball’s defense might have not won a championship on Thursday, but it did help Union the TigerScots pick up another non-league win as they defeated Union 3-1. Union (2-1) took the fi rst set 25-19, Weston-Mc. but then the Weston- McEwen (5-1) defense stepped up and led to some offense as the TigerScots fi nished off the win 25-23, 25-23 and 25-14. Davis completed 10 of 16 passes for 123 yards, while Boykin went 13 of 21 for 166 yards and a touchdown. Boykin was also intercepted twice and narrowly missed a third, and his 34-yard scoring pass to Rodney Smith came after defensive back Dexter McDonald tripped and fell in coverage. Seattle fi nished 4-0 in the preseason; the Raiders went winless for only the third time in franchise history. The Raiders likely also cleared up their backup quarter- back spot. EJ Manuel completed 8 of 12 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown while appearing to gain the upper hand in the battle with Connor Cook behind Derek Carr. Cook, a fourth-round draft pick in 2016, went 6 for 16 for 71 yards and was intercepted on Oakland’s fi nal possession. As expected, the game was basically a matchup of backups. Seattle sat out 18 starters, including Pro Bowl defensive ends Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril, Wilson, and cornerback Richard Sherman. The Raiders held out their entire starting offense and defense. Wide receiver Jermaine Kearse was also notably absent in what may have been his fi nal game with the Seahawks after rumors earlier this week Seattle See SEAHAWKS/2B Sports shorts Texans sign Hopkins to extension HOUSTON (AP) — The Texans and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins have agreed to a fi ve-year, $81 million contract extension. The deal, which includes $49 million guar- anteed, comes as the star receiver was entering the last year of his contract. Hopkins was the 27th overall pick in the 2013 draft. He has piled up 4,487 yards receiving in his fi rst four seasons, including a career-high 1,521 in 2015 despite playing with a revolving door Hopkins of quarterbacks. He’s started every game in his career and fi nished with 78 receptions for 954 yards last season. The 25-year-old has 23 receiving touch- downs in his career and will be the centerpiece of an offense that is looking to bounce back after a tough 2016 season with Brock Osweiler at quarterback. “Teams are going out and looking to play their best baseball against us, and the clip that we were on for a few months, obviously we were in rare company. The game marked the fi fth straight loss for the Dodgers, and the fi rst time they were swept this season. NBA fi nes Lakers for violating anti-tampering rule NEW YORK (AP) — New Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka’s contact with Paul George’s agent violated the NBA’s anti-tam- pering rule and resulted in a $500,000 fi ne for Los Angeles on Thursday. The league had warned the Lakers about tampering following comments by president of basketball operations Magic Johnson about George on national TV on April 20. The league said Pelinka’s contact with George’s agent “constituted a prohibited expression of interest in the player while he was under contract.” Attorney Adam Streisand, who represents the Lakers, called the investigation thorough. The NBA’s anti-tampering rule prohibits teams from interfering with other teams’ contractual relationships with NBA players.
