FOOTBALL Wednesday, August 30, 2017 2A COLUMBIA BASIN CONFERENCE A n exceptional senior class led to an exceptional season for Stanfi eld in 2016, winning the CBC title and earning a trip to the 2A state championship game. But expect the Heppner Mustangs to be back on top of the league this year, with Weston- McEwen right behind them. Returning starters: Brett Speed, QB, sr.; Jacob Speed, RB, sr.; Dylan Cain, FB, jr.; Garrett Shell, OL, sr.; Weston Phillips, OL/DL, jr.; Travis Hendley, WR, sr.; Zach Mann, OL, jr. Other returning lettermen: Logan Bates, OL, sr.; Bill Muilenburg, OL, jr.; Calvin Papineau, OL, soph.; Ethan Ezell, OL, jr.; Parker Munck, RB, sr.; Hadden Ball, RB, soph.; Anthony Flores, OL, soph.; Andrew Gambill, TE, jr.; Justin Humble, WR, sr. Other seniors: Max Webster, OL; Cody Caldwell, OL; Zack Thompson, OL. On offense: It is no secret that Weston-McEwen likes to run the football, utilizing a run-fi rst option offense that runs through senior QB and three-year starter Brett Speed and senior RB Jacob Speed. The TigerScots return a lot of depth along the offensive line, too, which should mean a lot of points scored in 2017. On defense: Playing in a run-fi rst league, the TigerScots deploy a rare 5-3 defensive formation that loves to swarm to the football. Just like the offensive line, the TigerScots have a lot of depth in its front eight, and should be a formidable unit this season. Other returning starters: Derek Howard, OL/DL, jr.; Dakota Howard, OL/DL, jr.; Jason Rea, OL/LB, so. Other seniors: Payton Lehman, WR/DB. On offense: Heppner has a variety of offensive formations in its playbook, choosing which fi ts against what opposing defenses give them. Improvement from QB Kevin Smith should help the Mustangs’ pass game, and all-league RB Coby Dougherty should keep the Mustangs run game going strong. On defense: Heppner has the versatility to run various defen- sive schemes depending on their opponent, but the common theme is a style where each player has specifi c responsibili- ties in formations. Physicality up front is key to put pressure on QBs when they drop to throw, as well as stop the run game, and they have the personnel to do that starting with all-state lineman Wyatt Steagall. Team’s biggest strengths: According to Grant, Heppner’s attitude, work ethic and camara- derie are the team’s best quali- ties, which are essential qualities of every Heppner squad. On defense: The Tigers are a bend-don’t-break defense with a main goal of stopping the run and making the opposing team beat them in the passing game. Stanfi eld runs a 4-4 base scheme to control the gaps up front. Team’s biggest strengths: According to Salas, the team’s biggest strengths are its experienced backfi eld, the group of linebackers, and a “tough” defensive line. Salas’ key to the season: “For us, it is to develop our young team slowly. Most importantly stay healthy with having limited experienced kids who saw varsity action last season.” Proud of our Bulldogs!
