A
bluegrass
group,
EOCenes was formed in the
late 1960s while the class-
mates were attending Eastern
Oregon College (now Univer-
sity). Emmons and Boyer met
during freshmen orientation
week and connected with
Spence and McClellan
through their involvement in
the Eastern Oregon College
Ambassadors, a musical
touring group that performed
across the Pacific Northwest.
Emmons, frontman for
local bluegrass band Cabbage
Hill, has played mandolin and
sung lead tenor and baritone
with the Blue Mountain
Crested Wheatgrass Boys, the
Muddy Bottom Boys, Blue
Heat and The Thatchmasters.
Boyer, who plays banjo
and guitar and sings lead,
tenor and baritone, taught
banjo and guitar at his alma
mater. In addition, he played
a major role in bringing
national bluegrass acts to the
area.

fronted a country-swing band
and sang in a gospel quartet.
Spence played guitar and
sang tenor for 27 years with
The Sawtooth Mountain
Boys. One of the Pacific
Northwest’s best known
bluegrass bands, its travels
included three tours in
Europe.
“We all went our separate
ways after, playing music
in different bands,” Spence
said. “So, 40-some years later
we ran into each other at a
festival in Tygh Valley, and
we still remembered some
songs, so we started playing a
few projects together.”
EOCenes, Spence said,
will again rendezvous in
Pendleton during Round-Up.
In addition to Feves, National
Oldtime Fiddle Champion
Dan Emert will perform with
the group.
