Despain Ave., Pendleton. 7:02 a.m. - A caller on South Main Street, Pendleton, asked police for help because people tried to get into her car. 7:41 a.m. - Milton-Freewater police took a report on vandalism to the restrooms at Freewater Park, 17 N.E. Eighth Ave. 8:04 a.m. - A man reported his mother’s care provider assaulted her Thursday night at her home and she is now at Good Shepherd Medical Center, Hermiston. 8:08 a.m. - Pendleton police received a report of a vehicle theft from First Community Credit Union, 705 S.W. Emigrant Ave. 8:17 a.m. - A resident in the 2900 block of Northeast Riverside Avenue, Pendleton, reported neighbors have been harassing her and her children. 3:14 p.m. - Milton-Freewater police received reports of vehicle prowls and possible break-ins and thefts on the 500 block of Cowl Street. 5:20 p.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office took a report of harassment and theft from South Mill Street, Ukiah. 11:36 p.m. - Law enforcement responded to a fight on East Airport Road, Hermiston. SATURDAY 1:23 a.m. - Several females fought in a yard on Northeast Fourth Street, Hermiston. 12:50 p.m. -Someone stole a trailer full of flooring from Cottage Flowers, 1725 N. Highway 395, Hermiston. 1:09 p.m. - The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office contacted a woman at Mountain Glen Apartments, 200 Pioneer Drive, Heppner, after receiving a complaint about her harassing people. 11:43 p.m. - Law enforcement responded to Eastern Oregon Trade and Event Center, 1705 E. Airport Road, Hermiston, on a report of someone shoving staff at the gate. SUNDAY 1:16 a.m. - Pendleton police responded to the Round-Up Grounds for an assault. 8:11 a.m. - Stanfield police took a report of burglary at Buttercreek Coffeehouse and Mercantile, 209 W. Main St., Echo. 8:13 a.m. - Oregon State Police responded to a single rollover on the eastbound side of Interstate 84 near milepost 223. The 49-year-old driver from Portland was going too fast for the conditions and lost control of the Ford Explorer on the wet road, according to state police, but he was not injured, nor were the three passengers. While investigating the crash, troopers found heroin 20 feet from the vehicle. They also determined the drugs did not come from the Ford. 10:29 a.m. - Boardman residents on Kunze Lane reported someone stole their neighbor’s tickets to the Farm-City Pro Rodeo at the Umatilla County Fair, Hermiston, and when they went to the rodeo, the people with the tickets showed up. 4:25 p.m. - Someone slashed tires on a vehicle on Water Street, Heppner. The victims reported a possible suspect who has been harassing them. 10:57 p.m. - Pendleton police and fire responded to a fire in a field near Blue Mountain Village Apartments, 2700 S.W. Goodwin Ave. The caller also said three boys ran away from the area of the fire. Joanne (Sis Ramos) Harris Echo April 18, 1934 - August 9, 2017 Joanne (Sis Ramos) Harris was born on April 18, 1934, and passed away on August 9, 2017; she was 83 years young. Airport Road, Hermiston. As usual, the sheriff’s office did not identify the driver in its media bulletin. Friday •Daniel Valencia Manso, 68, of Umatilla, tried to buy a gun at Columbia Outdoor Sports & Surplus Inc., Hermiston, but Oregon State Police reported the failure-to-appear warrant for his arrest put a nix on the sale. State police booked Valencia Manso into the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton, on the warrant and referred charges of unlawful purchase of a firearm and false swearing to the Umatilla County District Attorney’s Office. •Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office arrested Brittney Nicole Campbell, 23, and Benjamin Michael Whipple, 28, both of Pendleton, for first-degree burglary, second-degree theft and first-degree trespass. •Pendleton police arrested Olga Lucero, 29, of Pendleton, for second- and fourth-degree assault. •Oregon State Police arrested Lisa Michelle Spain, 55, no address provided, for DUII. Saturday •A woman at 11:34 a.m. reported a man flashed a pistol at her while traveling east on Interstate 84 near Cabbage Hill. She said the man sped ahead of her in a dark green Chevrolet SUV. Oregon State Police stopped the car in Ontario and arrested Michael Reed Bommersbach, 60, of Puyallup, Washington, for unlawful possession of a weapon and menacing. State police also brought him to the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton. •Hermiston police arrested Nicolas Landeros Garza, 19, of Irrigon, for possession of methamphetamine and on two warrants for failure to appear. •Hermiston police arrested Jonathan Rains, 19, of Hermiston, for possession of methamphetamine and on two warrants for failure to appear. •Pilot Rock police arrested Michael Lee Staggs, 33, of 373 S.E. Cherry St., Pilot Rock, for first-degree burglary, second-de- gree forgery and second-degree theft. •Hermiston police arrested Tate Brandon Patterson, 34, of Pendleton, for first-degree theft, possession of burglary tools and on warrants for failure to appear. •Umatilla tribal police arrested Loretta May Melendrez, 67, of Pendleton, for possession of methamphetamine. Sunday •Oregon State Police arrested Anthony Joseph Demos, 37, of Hermiston, for DUII (alcohol). •Pendleton police arrested Anthony R. Jones, 40, of Pendleton, for DUII. •Oregon State Police cited Rodriguez Valeria Estrada, 28, no address provided, for DUII (alcohol). •Oregon State Police arrested Sergio Luna, 43, of Baker City, for DUII and reckless driving. State police reported a trooper at about 7:45 p.m. stopped a white Honda Accord on Umatilla River Road near milepost 3 for driving north in the southbound lane. Luna was too drunk to try a sobriety test, state police reported. Two breath samples showed his blood-alcohol level was .324 percent and .306 percent, both well above the .08 percent legal limit. (541-449-3831) EAST UMATILLA COUNTY SCHOLARSHIPS Oregon Farm Bureau awards scholarship The Oregon Farm Bureau Foundation for Education recently awarded 12 scholarships to Oregon students preparing for a career in agriculture or forestry. Amy Swenson, a 2017 graduate of Pendleton High School, was a recipient of a $1,000 Oregon Farm Bureau Memorial Scholarship. Swenson is studying pre-veterinary medicine/science at Northwest Nazarene Swenson University. The scholarships are made possible through the continuing support of scholarship sponsors, fund donors and volunteer advisory committee members. Chapter BJ has awarded scholarships to two students at Blue Mountain Community College for the 2017-18 academic year. Dora Mulkey of Pendleton is the 2017 recipient of the Gladys and Harry Masen- himer Memorial Scholarship, an award of $2,500. The scholarship is given annually by the Masenhimer family as a memorial to their parents, and is awarded to outstanding local women who are pursuing advanced degrees. A 2015 graduate of Pendleton High School, Mulkey will be a sophomore this fall and is studying for an Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer Degree. She hopes to eventually earn a master’s degree in social work. The chapter also awarded a $2,000 scholarship to Juniper Cosner of Weston. The scholarship is awarded to exceptional women who are nearing completion of degrees at BMCC. Cosner will begin her second year at BMCC this fall, graduating next spring. She plans to eventually earn a bachelor’s degree in agriculture science and a minor in natural resources. The P.E.O. Sisterhood is dedicated to providing educational opportunities for women around the world, and has more than 240,000 members in the United States and Canada. Women’s club awards scholarships The Irrigon-Boardman Community Women’s Club recently awarded $3,500 in scholarships to students from Irrigon and Riverside high schools. Irrigon: Brandy Quezada-Hermosillo received a $750 scholarship and plans to continue her BMCC studies. Asusena Munoz received a $500 scholarship and plans to attend Oregon State University. Marilina Avila received a $500 scholarship and plans to attend George Fox University. Riverside: Lacey Mashos, valedictorian of her class, received a $750 scholarship and plans to attend Brigham Young Univer- sity. Selene Andrade-Bernal received a $500 scholarship and plans to continue her BMCC studies. Tania Mendoza received a $500 scholarship and plans to attend Oregon State University.
