That number are shown by the records of the local board not to have filed exemption claims, been rejected for physical disability, to have enlisted or to have been transferred to other boards for examination. While there were 45 claims for exemption filed with the local board, only 40 were from this county, the others being trans- fers. In addition the board today filed exemp- tion claims for two others, Martin Conrad and Onto Bihoglo of Pendleton. Conrad had registered as a citizen of Germany and Bihoglo as a citizen of Austria. They are not, therefore, eligible for service. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Aug. 11, 1967 The Pendleton Retail Merchants Associ- ation has abandoned any idea of a mall for downtown Pendleton. The retail merchants met Wednesday with the mayor’s committee on traffic and parking to discuss the future of a mall, parking and traffic in Pendleton. “The mall idea has been abandoned and this committee will give to the public the parking and traffic facilities that the public approved in their answers in a recent mall question- naire, conducted by the East Oregonian,” said William Stram, chairman of the mayor’s committee. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Aug. 11, 1992 After 135 issues of the Columbia Valley Chronicle, the progressive little river town of Boardman again finds itself without a home- town weekly. The Glenn family published its last edition of the tabloid newspaper last week after 2 1/2 years of financial struggles. “After much struggle, it’s just a recognition that there’s just not enough interest in print advertising in the Boardman-Irrigon-North Morrow County market to financially support a newspaper,” said publisher Ed Glenn, who happens to be the president of the Boardman Chamber of Commerce and a candidate for Morrow County commissioner. The Chron- icle, Glenn said, went the route of three other preceding Boardman papers, including the Boardman Beacon and the Boardman Enter- prise, which were tried unsuccessfully in the 1970s, and another paper that was published in the 1930s.
