DAYS GONE BY BEETLE BAILEY GARFIELD BY MORT WALKER BY JIM DAVIS 100 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Aug. 7-8, 1917 Billie McMillan, 11 years old and rather small for his age, was cast adrift by his parents in this city yesterday and told to make his own living. According to his story told this morning to Juvenile Officer John Hailey, they brought him to Pendleton yesterday from Adams in the horse-drawn rig in which they are traveling through the county, set him down here, and drove away without him, telling him he was big enough to look out for himself. Fortunately he fell into the hands of Mr. Hailey this morning. The juvenile officer will care for him while he makes a search for the unnatural father and mother. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Aug. 7-8, 1967 State police suspected arson in a fire Monday morning inside an abandoned service station on Highway 30 near Barnhart. Pendleton Grain Growers sent one truck to the scene. Firemen were able to save part of the building. Residents in the Sherwood Heights area, six miles from the fire, smelled the smoke. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Aug. 7-8, 1992 Thomas Maletta, the New Jersey long-dis- tance truck driver who earlier this year pleaded guilty in the murder of his ex-girlfriend, was sentenced Thursday to spend at least 25 years in prison. Maletta, 30, will be 55 years old when he becomes eligible for parole in 2017, Judge Jack Olsen said in announcing his judg- ment. The sentence came after more than three hours of testimony from the victim’s mother, father and 10-year-old son, from a New Jersey woman who claimed she was raped by Maletta in 1987, and from Maletta himself, who other- wise sat quietly throughout the proceeding.
